This game has been one tumultuous ride. I would be remiss to not acknowledge at least that. For that past year, playstarbound.com has been one of my frequently visited sites, for updates, for excitment, for community and for drama, for laughs and fun and what unfortunately most sours the memory, resigned dissapointment.
If you’re reading this and deciding whether or not to purchase, I suggest just this.
- Visit the developer website for this game to explore.
- Comb the forums and updates. Early as you want. It goes back a while.
- Read what people say about this game on the site. You may find little to no criticism, unsurprising for a dedicated fanbase, form an opinion and then read this:
- People claim to have had their concerns and criticisms flamed, belittled, and banned, not only by posters but starbound moderators.
- Start reading reviews here, both the positive and negative (Use the filters if you’re new to steam).
- Compare some of the positive reviews to posts on the starbound forum. I gleaned some similarity in tone and style.
If you feel it necessary, watch gameplays and update videos.
If you do all this, you should be in good shape to decide for yourself just what you want from this game. If you want my total opinion, read on.
Despite all the calamity, I had fun with starbound. It's a decent game. I recommend it as another terraria if you're bored of terraria but want terraria still, and you're willing to deal with early access poppycock.
I understand that as an early access, you are not likely to get what you desire, you are not even likely to get what you are promised.
I understand now, because it actually bloody happened. I was young, you know how we are at my age, silly and shiny and dumb. I was enticed by the ritz, the stars, the bounds. I wanted it all. They promised it all.
Many months have passed now, and I’ve still to see what I was promised. And at this point, even if the moment I finish this review I should find a finished Starbound gift basket, filled with apples and condoms and cornish pixies, I would still feel tricked. And I payed good money for that feeling, and damn to you all if I’m not entitled to that emotion considering the circumstances
And I deserved to be tricked. I bought the game before it was finished. I was told things wouldn’t be as they planned it. I knew it was a risk. But like Napoleon, I advanced into Russia with nothing more than high hopes. It doesn’t make me a victim, nor does it make the developers criminals. I think what it does make us is a bunch of retreating French and homeless Russians.
There have been many asservations, many blind white knights and attention mongering whistleblowers. Hell, I’m probably both of those personas. What I think now though, is that this game is one hell of a gamble to buy as is. If you can’t wait for the full title, and you’re a gambling man or woman, I say capitalism ho! Otherwise, come on back once the smoke’s settled.
