Reviews

"It really feels like it could be the start of something big; through conversations with people and lessons during class, you get peeks at something that could expand into a remarkably big and well developed fantasy universe, and it seems we've only just dipped our toe into it." - Jay Is Games

"Weird barely begins to cover it. Magical Diary is an indie, Japanese style adventure (though not actually from Japan) that’s a little bit visual novel, a little bit RPG, and a whole heck of a lot of Harry Potter. Luckily, it’s also really good fun." - Rock Paper Shotgun

IT is a really nice visual novel with cute art and plenty of events and story twists to keep you interested and each play through new. I really enjoyed the skill building feature and the exam events to test how you use the skills. The characters were a lot of fun as well, there is a variety of personalities and finding out about them through scattered events (that you need to work towards, they don't just happen regardless of what you are doing) was really interesting. I have played through three different save files and I am still trying to figure out what some of the storylines are/how to go further into thm.

Really cute and a great coming of age throwback with some twists. The storyline is engaging. I like how certain choices can dramatically effect the storyline unintentionally. Played through twice and looking to go through it a third time.

I wanted to romance the demon, but was forced into marrying my teacher.

...this is probably my favorite visual novel style game to date. Customizable heroine, multiple story paths, actual puzzles and reasons for your stat increases, and the game is hilarious.

Would love to play from another house's POV and not just as a Horse gal, though. Is there a chance I can be a Falcon in the future?!

It's a PG rated Harry Potter (with the serial numbers very lightly filed off) otome dating sim with goofy anime art. You can kiss a fairy girl or a woobified Snape. You probably already know if you're in the target market for this. If not, you can leave now.

Assuming you are, this is great fun. The magical exams, with their different solutions depending on what spells you've learned, break it up nicely. It's a typical Hanako game in that it is warmly inclusive and full of hidden plotlines that you can't access on a single playthrough. It might not be as polished as some of their later games, but it is charming as all heck, and worth playing through over and over to collect all the plotlines and achievements.

And, sad admission that this is for a 40 year old, I like pretending to be at Hogwarts in a game. Sue me. I love that the default name is Mary Sue.

My three year old son wants to point out that the female Dumbledore espy is "SO CUTE!"

I want a sequel.

This is an excellent combination of visual novel, dating sim, and RPG. It’s not long; you can complete a single run in one sitting. However, there are plenty of decisions to make and you can replay the game over and over again. It’s easily worth the $15 to buy.

Kissed a Plush Bunny. Kissed a fairy. Had a lesbian relationship. Offered my soul to a demon. Had to go to detention a few times. Got my bra thrown around in the cafeteria. Got spanked by a teacher. Accidentally married said teacher. Got my memories taken by said teacher.

My line of thinking for this game:

I'll only play for a couple hours till I get the cards.
Oh, heck, might as well get these easy achievements.
These little dungeon exams are actually kind of cool...
My demon boyfriend just did what?? Nu-uh, not on my watch.
...
5 hours later, all achievements complete, I put on my robe and wizard hat. Don't ♥♥♥♥ with me ♥♥♥♥♥, I'm the mightiest sorceress of the lands.

Accidently married Severus Snape in a dark dungeon below the school, then continued to wallow in self-pity for the rest of the playthrough until reloading, fixing my mistake, getting sacrificed for the bloodgod, reloading again and celebrating my days as a socially awkard lesbian witch.
Males are evil. All of them.

10/10, got my bra stolen by the Illuminati at some point.

As a guy that is firmly trying to impose the idea to my friends that I am a Strong male figure and individule, I feel ashamed at having put myself on "offline" mode whilst playing this game after i got it from the humble bundle. But il be damned if it isnt one damn fine First Person Novel with ur actions deciding how well or badly you do, and despite this, the customization is there, the distinct characters with different personalities are present and its a damn fine good play.

To be enjoyed both ironically and unironically, 'Magical Diary' is truly the perfect gift for any occasion.

Featuring more animes per second, with only a fraction of the overreaching schmaltz found in second-rate indie competitors like 'To the Moon,' 'Magical Diary' pulls out all the stops and delivers a magical, one-of-a-kind experience that'll have you saying "I actually don't hate this...?" for years to come.

Is there a demonic wizard bishie waiting in your future? Only one way to find out...

'Magical Diary' gets one Steam Thumb way up from this reviewer.

A dating sim for the young witch in all of us! Like Harry Potter, with a liberal dose of anime and without all that uptight britishness that makes me kinda hate it. Also a liberal dose of progressive gender and sexuality, which is always a fun one, and racial politics too. (That said, I was a *little* offput by the 'marriage is kind of a year-long thing' plot point, even if it makes sense in context...)

Don't be fooled - this is mostly a dating/life sim. There are 'dungeons', but they're more obtuse and annoying puzzle roadblocks I could honestly do without. Persona 3/4 this ain't. Also, you have to be a girl, though you have a wide range of options for your love life, three straight and two gay, and a wide variety of other non-romance events. Romance is legitimate and well-handled - the opposite of Bioware's efforts. (Oh god, flashbacks to terrible competing english VN Planet Stronghold DDDDDDD:)

Overall, takes itself just seriously enough not to be a broad parody, but not so much that it's hard to get into or requires heavy investment. (The default character's name is Mary Sue, if that tells you anything.) Highly recommended for anyone who's even a little into the idea, and even better, sequels are on the way!

Sadly, the best character is unromanceable, despite her obviously being open to the idea of a relationship with a student and a lady. :C Oh, Professor Potsdam, how I long for some private lessons with you... ;o; (maybe she's married? i dunno.)
