关于这款游戏

They Bleed Pixels is a fiendishly difficult action platformer inspired by H.P. Lovecraft and classic horror. Rendered in a distinct visual style that blends pixel art with paper and ink textures, They Bleed Pixels is a singular mix of intense platforming and fierce beat-em-up action. At the core of its fighting system is a simple one-button combat scheme with surprising depth and versatility. Button mashing is discouraged while kicking shadowy monsters into saws, pits and spikes is rewarded, thanks to a unique system that lets you earn and place your own checkpoints through stylish kills. The fancier your kills, the faster you fill the checkpoint meter.

Story:
When a young girl arrives at the Lafcadio Academy for Troubled Young Ladies, she's unprepared for the violent nightmares that plague her dreams and transport her to other worlds. Worse yet, her dreams are intruding into her waking life, slowly altering her flesh into the demonic form of her night terrors. Can she destroy the mysterious blood-soaked book that appears to be the root of her troubles or will her transmutation from girl to clawed horror become complete?

Key Features:

  • Extra tight controls: One-button attack system favors skilled combat over complicated combos and button-mashing. Super precise platforming controls let you stop and start on a dime while pulling off gravity-defying dashes and double jumps.

  • Eleven massive levels to fight through and explore, each with unique visuals and music. Unlock additional bonus levels and guest levels from indie game developers based on their own creations: They Bleed Ponycorns, They Bleed Stardust, exp.

  • Unique checkpoint system rewards fancy kills with a save spot you can carry with you. Hold on to it for extra points or drop it right away to preserve your progress.

  • Becoming a monster stabbing master with individual level rankings as well as 150 skill-based achievements. There's lots to aim for after you've completed the game.

  • Standard and Novice difficulty to match your skill level.

  • Record, playback and share your best playthroughs with online leaderboards for speed and high score!

  • Lush pixel art motion comics tell the story a young girl haunted by eldritch nightmares.

  • Original electronic soundtrack by DJ Finish Him (aka Shaun Hatton) composed with synthesizers, unconventional instruments and gadgets often not meant for musical use.

They Bleed Pixels has two difficulty levels: Standard and Novice. Standard is the tough difficulty level, and Novice is one for newer players. If you aren't used to playing platformer games designed to be difficult, it is recommended to practice with Novice before attempting Standard. That said, I haven't actually touched Novice at all and have only completed the game on Standard, so I am not in a position to review the Novice mode - as a result, this review is assuming Standard Mode throughout.

Quite possibly one of the most infuriatingly satisfying games I've ever played, They Bleed Pixels is a pixel perfect platformer that eases you in, and then obliterates you over and over until you get it right. Then when you get it right? It amps it up past eleven and saws you in half. Make no mistake, by the time you finish the final level of this game you will be able to rush through earlier levels like they were Super Mario-level easy.

Starting off with the basic abilities, our eldritch heroine, the Clawed Girl, has 3 HP - you can take three hits maximum. The only exception to this is tall spikes, the ones with blood on the tips that are double her height; though you can walk through and under them, fall atop them and you instantly die, no matter what HP you're on. The Clawed Girl has the ability to kick forward, kick upward, jab with her claws, sweep above her head with her claws, fly downwards to the ground in an aerial claw-dive, and has a quick dash that shoots her in the direction she's facing and swipes wherever she ends up. The main mechanic behind her and the game, however, is tied to pints of blood. Whenever the Clawed Girl slays an enemy through whatever means, she gains blood which powers a meter in the top left of the screen. When this meter is filled, the Clawed Girl can create a checkpoint that she can respawn from should she perish in the future, with each checkpoint overwriting the last and spawning you in as if reversing time to the exact moment you laid the checkpoint when you die. The caveat to this, however, is that you cannot create a checkpoint while the Clawed Girl is moving; on slippery platforms and moving platforms, you cannot create checkpoints. You must be still for about three seconds to create one, and even then, you can't create a checkpoint while there is an enemy or trap in a large bubble around you. This works as a good limiter to this ability, and makes later levels in the game even tougher as you will be forced to travel long distances and overcome many challenges without hitting a part of the level suitable to build a checkpoint on.

The level design is varied, clever and ultimately cruel. An excellent aspect of this game is that it is made to push you to your limits with the tools you have been given - there are tutorials to teach the player how to use certain abilities, and you should pay attention because you will need to utilise everything in your arsenal in order to overcome the challenges laid out by the Clawed Girl's unrelenting nightmares. You must crawl before you can walk, and walk before you can run, and the game does a very good job of slowly raising players to that level with the numerous stages rising in difficulty as you tackle them. Despite this, however, there are a couple of notable difficulty spikes - if you aren't seasoned or don't have the willpower to tackle games such as this, expect your playthrough to likely end around Dream 3, Stage 3. Having completed the game, I can safely say that this stage was the point where I officially threw any thought of collecting the game's collectible trinkets, known as Pages, to the wind and decided solely to focus on trying to survive and complete levels.

Even with that focus, the game was still tough as nails. It has been a while since any game has had the sheer level of difficulty required to make me have to take frequent breaks while playing due to getting worked up, but the payoff is extreme - that level that takes you a hundred tries to complete has never felt as satisfying as this, and finally beating that part of the level that has plagued you for so long is exhilerating and relieving. The game does a fantastic job of stacking things so heavily against you with few invincibility frames, unforgivingly perfect mechanics, and torturous enemy placement; despite this, the vast majority of the time when you die (and you WILL die, a lot) it'll feel like it was your fault. You should have been quicker. You should have duked out that Squid so that it didn't charge you at the wrong time and mess up your jump. You should have ducked sooner so that the Shambler missed its attack. This being said, however, there are a few nitpicky issues with some of the things in this game that can't be glossed over. In the early levels, you can handle being hit and it'll almost always be fine. In later levels, getting hit is often an immediate death sentence because by the time you can regain control of your recoiling character, other things in the environment have practically lined up to kill her. To use an example, a Squid hitting you at the wrong time of your jump is very rarely a recoverable situation - you will almost always immediately fall to something else and die, and be forced to start again from your previous checkpoint. Not to mention sawblades; the vast majority of the time in later levels, a hit from a sawblade at any point basically means you're going to be knocked miles out of intended alignment, which results in a death 99 times out of 100.

There are also some questionable hitboxes within the game, such as you face-planting downward hanging spikes or hitting diagonally-placed spikes despite your character only sliding right next to their pixels and not actually having properly touched them. The same issue can be seen with sawblades, which can hit you when it feels like you should have just slid by with your lower half just missing it by an inch according to the pixels. This isn't something that'll trouble you often, however, and can be totally forgotten as these are only minor nitpicks and are nowhere near as prevalent as would need to be to be a real problem.

The aesthetical style is pixelly and beautiful, from the comic-like cutscenes to the retro pixelly gameplay sections, though the extra artwork earnable in-game ranges from cutesy to awesome to downright creepy. One particular picture by Paul Hillier (the second one in the artwork) is one I visibly have difficulty viewing but also very much love because it creeps me out big time. However, you have to earn keys to unlock this artwork through completing challenges in the in-game levels to earn "Blood Badges", of which earning certain amounts grants you the aforementioned keys. You'll undoubtedly get numerous keys just by progressing through the game (though worth noting is that Blood Badge earning is limited in Novice Mode) but this only gets you so far before you have to complete more varied and difficult tasks to earn more. Make no mistake, this game will make you work for your rewards.

The story for the game isn't anything to go crazy about, but it is interesting and ties in the Lovecraftian vibes rather well. Personally, I've never particularly been huge on Lovecraft but I do enjoy some of the things spawned from it, and this game encapsulates that quite well. The story follows a girl who arrives at a school, and is subsequently cursed by the Headmaster through a book of sorts, giving her nightmares and slowly transforming her.

Overall, I would say that if you're a seasoned player that enjoys a challenge regularly plays tough games, this is a good game for you. If you're a more casual player looking for a challenge, it's worth a try, but if you lack in the willpower to see other games of this type through, I definitely wouldn't bother.

TL;DR Recommended for budding masochists and seasoned players of difficult games, not for people who get angry easily or struggle to play hard games.

This game is hard. This game is mean. And the main protagonist is hella cute (Get it? Hell? Demons? ...I'll shut up).

So yeah. Characters are cool, story is simple and straightforward, and the gameplay — that one's just mean. This is one of those games that make you want to toss your keyboard and/or mouse or gamepad to the wall, cursing, and then proceed to uninstall it and give it a negative review because 'hsdfghgh crappy controls and the enemies cheet!!1'. Oh, you aren't that sort of a person? Good! Then, this might be just the game for you!

So, the gameplay. You only have one weapon, really: the claws (a-and kicking, so I guess that's two different weapons). The environment is full of traps that easily kill you off due to the platforms being too small, too slippery, too... not-where-you-landed. You get the point. Especially after 10 minutes of gameplay and several dozen deaths. Now, the fun part? You can toss and kick your enemies into these traps for extra points! ...and extra gore. That's the main reason, really. Should be, anyway. So, you can utilize your melee attacks to perform cool combos and finishers. You also have a couple extra ways to move: jumping off the wall, and dashing horizontally. You'll be using these a LOT. You'll also be dying a lot while trying to learn to use them, sometimes while avoiding enemies and their attacks while at it.

Now, as mentioned, the game is really hard and punishing. The checkpoint system is pretty neat, though: after gaining enough score, you may drop a checkpoint anywhere you want (except next to traps), so the farther you go and the bigger risk you take, the easier it will be for you from then on, were you to die (NOTE: for perfectionists and scoreboarders: you get extra points if you just keep the checkpoint gauge filled and continue that way). Now, most will likely end up just trying to clear the levels. That's okay, the game is hard enough as is. But for each level, you have these badges: get all collectibles, get enough score, get MORE score, clear the level within a certain time limit... and clear the level without dying. So even if you are confident in your abilities, you'll be spending a LOT of time with this game. The latest update, not aaaall that long ago, added in a few more extra levels, too, one of which... ugh. Bad memories. Let's just say: don't underestimate this game.

If you want a good platformer, real challenges, (and a cute eldritch protagonist girl!) — it's time to make them monsters bleed some pixels. And now, after that update I already mentioned, they now bleed even more pixels!

Not too fast and not too slow, just right. If you like Super Meat Boy, but didn't enjoy how break-neck the speed can be, this might be your cup of tea. The music of the game goes quite well with levels, sometimes really adding to the tension of some particularly tricky jumps. The backgrounds are very lush and will sometimes play a part in how the geometry and themes of the level play out. For example, chapter 2-level 3, has paper lamps in the background, which is also the shape that some of your platforms for that level will be. Some levels focus on being methodical while others will create a need to go as fast as possible.

The combat is easy to get into, but hard to master. Anyone can stab a shambler, but the challenge comes from new and efficient ways of going about it. Why kill one at a time when you can kick him and his friends into a corner and into a saw blade all at once? While enemy variety is sparse, the ways to kill are not. The game rewards you in two ways for chaining these events together: Score and checkpoints. Score is just a way to show how good you did and it comes with achievements. Checkpoints allow you to hold a charge that, when standing still, creates a place to start from. The better you do, the more frequent the checkpoints.

Lastly, the game gives you everything you need to platform to the best of your precision from the start. You can double jump, dash, plummet, latch onto and off of walls, and you can duck. Most of the things you can perform are in the in-game instructions menu and, through progress unlocks, tutorials. Even if they are not located there, the environment has stickers of buttons to help you out, sometimes redundantly. One odd decision was omitting how to preform slides in the instructions menu, then there's a level where you have to use the slide to get through and there is indeed a sticker with how to perform the move. After you beat said level, the tutorial teaches you how to...slide. I found this confusing because if I need the slide to beat the level why put a tutorial _after_ I beat it instead of before. It is a very minor gripe compared to another thing I dislike, which is the ice platforms. While their main purpose is to prevent you from check pointing and to encourage momentum, they make combat a complete hassle to perform at times. You'll want to combo and stab something only to realize you pushed him away. Dashing almost never works on ice, but when it does, you'll pinball away from your target. Kicking becomes very hard and the only (somewhat) reliable way of taking out enemies on ice is to plummet from very far up or very close to the ground and foe, kick them into the air and stab them since jumps are _mostly_ unaffected by ice.

If you can handle a few annoyances, difficult levels with a somewhat large spike in difficulty around chapter 4, and the occasional enemy arenas, then give this game a shot. The music is memorable, the style and themes are well put together, and it's a total blast to play through. If you do buy the game, be sure to take occasional breaks and good luck on Chapter 5.

Platforming! Pixelated graphics! Violence! Maddening difficulty! What is there not to like? Playing They Bleed Pixels is like eating really hot salsa without the risk of heartburn (although debatable and not medically proven yet). However, if you are more of a medium salsa rather than volcano salsa type of person, this game has an alternative less-hard mode for you guys! Still, this game is not for the faint of heart. You will very likely experience getting stabbed, spiked, impaled, exploded, exploded then spiked then impaled, headbutted by floating cephalopods, slugged by swampmen, clawed, sliced, diced, liquified by buzzsaws, and all of the above in oh-so-many combinations. My only beef with the game is this set of equations: Platforming equals good time, combat equals okay time, but platforming plus combat equals...Sans. Still, it's got a cool soundtrack, is xbox360 controller compatable, and has a sort-of-lovecraft thing going on. It's like Super Meatboy, but slower-paced, more pixelated, and a bit more...classy. Good stuff. Buy it...IF YOU DARE!
