Now Is the Time For Greatness…

Crusader Kings II: The Old Gods is the fourth expansion for the critically praised strategy/RPG. Finally play as a Pagan or Zoroastrian ruler, with particular focus on the dreaded Vikings. Pillage and adventure according to true Viking tradition!

Key Features

  • Play as a Pagan chieftain and ravage your weak neighbors. If you remain at peace for too long, your people will grow restless...

  • Play as a Zoroastrian lord and restore your ancient religion to prominence
  • Adventurers: Landless characters can gather armies and carve out new realms on their own
  • Prepared Invasions: Declare your intention to invade and watch your armies grow with adventurers and restless warriors, but don't wait too long to start your war or it might all fall apart...
  • Rebels with a Cause: Rebels are no longer a faceless menace – they are now led by characters with agendas
  • Loot and pillage provinces. Burn down cities and take their gold!
  • Sacrifice to Odin at the great Blot!
  • Christians and Muslims can dispatch missions to convert the depraved heathens

Beginning with Ragnar Lodbrok I conquered Scandinavia, colonised Britain, reformed the religion and became a feudal government. The resulting Viking Empire is currently crushing Christendom under it's boot while pillaging the Sunni followers for everything their worth.

Very nice DLC, worth the money. Although portraits and whatnot not being included in the 15€ is a HUGE dissapointment. If you're going to have overpriced DLCs at least add some minor things such as darn portraits

Do vikings give you a boner?

They very well might if the other reviews are to be believed, and if so, god bless, pick up this DLC and viking to your little heart's content. Do you have an interest in, perhaps, playing as other pagans, tribes, or just an interest in the earlier start in general? If that is the case, you might actually want to consider this a bit more.

The Norse pagans are actually very well fleshed out. If playing an incredibly easy game doesn't make you feel any guilt, you will probably have a blast raiding and conquering with absurd ease. Their religion is full of neat features and the Norse are given incredibly strong starts all across Scandinavia, and also in the British Isles, Rus, Ruthenia, and Brittany; most of these come complete with magic soldiers that have appeared from nowhere so you can easily squash everybody in your immediate vicinity. Some particularly satisfying actions are to build a runestone to your own great self or a parent, or to hold the Germanic pagan feast: The Great Blot, which comes complete with human sacrifice! And, yes, you can sacrifice your prisoners. Carving the blood eagle on that regent who looted your treasury for a decade or so in the name of Odin is certainly fun.

Will anything I outlined above be difficult for you? Absolutely not. Even if you don't play as Sweden, Ostlandet, Sjaelland, Jorvik, The Isles, Nantes, Novgorod, Kiev or any other cakewalk viking starts available to you, you can simply be patient and raid and raid and raid with your free shipyards, the free ships from said shipyards, and bonus soldiers into great wealth, and then seize your independence or subjugate your neighbors that way. The only difficult part there is the wait. That might not bother you, though, and again, god bless, have fun.

What about the other pagans made available to you with this DLC, though? This is where things become very, very disappointing. In stark contrast to the well put-together Germanic pagans, the Romuva, Suomensusko, Tengri, Slavic, and West African pagans are all exactly the same. Each one has a religious feast which differs from the others in name only, with the exception of the West Africans who don't get anything at all. Some of the regions that appear to be unlocked for play seem to exist for no reason other than for the Vikings to conquer them. Finland in almost it's entirety will be a nigh-impossible start, and Pomerania can often times follow suit, to say nothing of the minor counts and chiefs unfortunate enough to start in Rus, Ruthenia, or Brittany that are, invariably, doomed. The Germanic Norse characters also have a lot of access to magic event troops and can declare war on anybody with a coastal county, too, with some of those Casus Belli's being able to take entire kingdoms.

So, if you're interested in an easy little viking-themed squashfest, purchase this. If you're a greasey hipster like me who also has at least a passing interest in Baltic, Finno-Urgic and West African cultures and their associated faiths, do give this some serious consideration, though. Or, at least, don't drop an outrageous $15 on this and instead wait for it to go on sale. It always does.

Want to rule the world the world as a Thor worshipper who does not know the end of war before he meets a buddhist, or should I say its flying head, on a faraway battlefield? An exile on random lands because of being the 7th son of a major vassal of some other Othin's worshipper self-made emperor who overthrew your father?

If you don't need a social life for a while, this game is for you.

The Old Gods expansion for crusader kings 2 is a must have if you own the base game. it scales back the start date to the 800s when the vikings reigned supreme. Get acccess to norse religion events and other pagans. you can take up to three concubines and go pillaging. Your people will get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ if you dont declare war enough. This expansion is well worth the sticker price but you can easily find most paradox games go on sale once a quarter if you look in the right place. especially when its been out for a while.

This DLC reawakened my love of Crusader Kings II. The heathen nations which were being weeded out at the time of the base game are now plentiful and - to be honest - more fun to play. What I didn't realize is that this isn't just about playing as a Viking (though that's definitely a fun place to start). There's a whole world of turmoil to plunge into. And, the feel of the game is different than the base game. Other than Sword of Islam, this is one truly essential DLC to flesh out your CK2 experience.

Playing as Vikings

Lo there I see my father...

Hell yeah. Playing as a Norse is so much fun. All the raiding, pillaging and invading is enjoyable. At least to the point where it gets hilariously easy when you get around 2000 Gold + 2000 Prestige in one go by raiding Italy including Rome and Venice, Greece, Constantinopel, and even the yet to be Holy Lands. Maxing out all of your counties even those that you don't own while steamrolling Europe with your pagan single-border casus belli will give you plenty of hours of joy.

Buuuut. After that it really gets quite lame. The raiding becomes repetetive (who knew) and the inability of the AI to defend itself makes it even worse. There really won't be much of a challenge as the Christian states are highly unlikely to declare a holy war on you and even if they do you destroy them with ease.

I do recommend The Old Gods when you want to play as a Viking.

Playing as England

If you want to learn the basic game mechanics I can recommend playing as an Irish ruler. You can raid but wont be in imminent danger of being wiped out immediately.

Unlike when you play as Wessex.

And oh my god that is a nightmare. Having 20k Vikings right at your doorstep is quite intimidating when you command a maximum of 5k men into battle. The only way I managed to beat them was by hiring mercenaries with the money I earned from my marriage and joining forces with my allied Britains. And holy balls. I won.

Aaaaand hello Denmark Invasion! Here, friend. Take another 20k Vikings on a conquest to steamroll your lands! ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t.

Don't believe the DLC description stating that you can "defend your lands against the invading heathens". You will be very disappointed.

This DLC allows you to play as Pagans. This means you can now play as.. Vikings, Mongols, Slavs, Zorastrians, Sami, and romuvan. If you have the ruler designer there are also a couple more less fleshed out pagans to play as too. But the real kicker is the ability to play as Norse and the Tengri (Mongols).

This also adds an earlier start date to the game, however the earlier date's value can be debatable. It makes playing a viking much more fun but Europe can look really messy with all the Karlings inheriting Karling land, and it makes all the fun later game stuff like mongols take much longer to happen, which can force a game to end prematurly.

Either way, this DLC is by far the greatest addition to CK2 (at the time of this review Charlemagne has not come out yet, although that still looks like it adds less). Sure, Rajas adds Inida, which is huge, but Old Gods adds so much more, just in playable charectors and situations.

Two words: ♥♥♥♥ING VIKINGS

Sets the game's starting point back and allows you to pillage and burn just like the Vikings did. Woohoo! This Expansion also adds alot of other religious options in general, and is not merely focused upon those magnificently bearded men from Scandinavia.

Plenty to like here. :D
