"This is not only a great example of a professional and credible free-to-play game, but it's also one of the best first-person shooters I've played. I am quite serious when I say that, too. This game is a serious FPS contender, and its freemium status should not diminish your expectations. I wholeheartedly recommend you jump in and give it a try. It'll cost only your time to give it a whirl, and I am certain that it'll be time well spent."

"Great shooting mechanics and deep customization options make for an addictive combination, and its free-to-play model makes it easy to jump into with no upfront cost."

"The matter is simple – the game is free to play and, if you take my word for it, an excellent shooter. In a perfect world, it would knock the CoD series on its ass."

Acerca do Jogo

Take firefights to a futuristic new level in Blacklight: Retribution, a free-to-play FPS. See through walls with the HRV, deploy mechanized Hardsuits, and customize your weapons to dominate the opposition.

In Blacklight, mastering the futuristic tech is half of victory. You'll need to carefully balance your loadout, from the extreme customization possible in designing your firearms, to the equipment you carry and the in-match bonuses you can unlock. The Hyper Reality Visor (HRV) allows you to look through walls and spot enemies, and attack from where they aren't expecting - but be careful, because you're vulnerable while using it.

The other half of victory? Raw skill, same as it's always been. Good hunting, Agent...

As a preface to this review I would like to first acknowledge (briefly, as necessary) the positive qualities of Blacklight: Retribution. Mechanically, the game is fantastic. The guns feel really good, the maps are extremely well-designed, customization is just flat-out awesome, and overall the gameplay is great and very well balanced with few exceptions. Most importantly, it's actually a lot of fun to play (and it's really not "pay-to-win," you just need to practice more, I promise).

However, as somebody who has suffered more than 100 hours of constant (CONSTANT) problems with this game over the years, I would honestly not recommend that new players waste their time. Here is a laundry list of problems I deal with, literally, on a weekly basis: CTDs, memory leaks, problems connecting to the Perfect World severs, dropped connections from games, game launcher not launching or won't connect, horrendous performance drops after map changes, horrendous performance drops in general, graphical glitches galore, extreme lag and hitbox issues, and the fact that Steam achievements just don't work (they never have).

This all sounds really bad, of course, like a brand new game that was just rushed out of beta and still has some kinks to work out. If that was actually the case, some of these problems might be forgivable in the short run; however, all of these problems are actually KNOWN ISSUES, and they've been known about for more than A YEAR. I don't know if the developer just doesn't know how to fix them or if they just don't care, but as many people in the community will tell you, nothing has been done about it. On the plus side, at least there's all this shiny new gear in the depot waiting for your wallets! Yuck.

If all this sounds unreasonably harsh for a game that is, after all, completely free, well... I'm one of the saps that actually paid for it. Initially I bought the Starter Pack ($15) and later spent $20 on Zen so I could make my digi-agent as digi-cool as possible. I decided it was worth it to invest in this game because, "Hey, this is actually a really good game that's a lot of fun, and maybe my investment will help keep it alive and growing!" Unfortunately, it turns out that what they spent my money on was coming up with new ways to ask me for my money, rather than patching up the game and making it actually work. So essentially, I've spent $35 on a broken and unfinished product so that everyone else could keep playing it. You're welcome.

On a related note, I think it's funny and perhaps a bit telling that the best custom weapon tag you can get in the game is actually a promotional item for the dev's upcoming title, Daylight. Whatever significance that holds for you, the likelihood is that, at this point in Blacklight's life cycle, this is probably as good as it's going to get. They also have the PS4 version to make money off of now.

I won't even mention the fact that the community is so rife with cheaters that the company actually endorses a third-party cheater "blacklist" website as a resource for server admins. Oops, too late.

Actually, the community as a whole is pretty terrible. There seems to be no shortage of players whose primary goal is to be as annoying as possible, and the player base is apparently mostly comprised of mouthy "hardcore" gamer kids circa Call of Duty age. People's behavior is generally completely intolerable, and this is coming from a guy who played Counter-Strike in 1999.

As I said before, Blacklight IS a really good game. Hell, I'd even say it's one of the best multiplayer FPS's of the last few years. I would encourage anybody to at least download it and see what it does for you. Just be warned, however, that your mileage can and will vary, and I would definitely NOT recommend sending even one dime to these people. It isn't worth it, or at least it wasn't to me. It's a great game, but it's a lousy product. So play it for free if you want - use it, abuse it, grief it, twist it, bop it - nobody is listening or seems to care anyway. Have fun, but keep your money to yourself.

To be fair, I know not everybody has experienced the problems I have. That doesn't mean they don't exist, and if you read forums around the web you'll find many, many other people who've seen them too. That said, based on my personal experience, I would not recommend this game.

Blacklight Retribution is possibly one of the best futuristic Free-to-Play shooters you can find in Steam. The gameplay along with the content presented in this game will have you at the edge of your seat as you engage in combat along with various players from across the world (and bots sometimes) in several large maps for you to bludgeon, snipe, dismember and kill.

The content is pretty vast in Blacklight Retribution. You have various heroes to choose from, but as a new player, you simply start with a custom hero to play. Additional heroes have significant pros and cons and they require Game Points or ZENs (a.k.a spend real money for ZEN, the in-game money). The same goes to the weapons, as you start out with a pretty formidable weapon, the Assault Rifle. While you can customize your weapons (which will incur more Game Points or ZENs), you can spend less by buying premade weapons (the only con is that you can't customize premade weapons). While depot loadouts for new users are simply enough to get by, players with enough Game Points or ZEN can purchase better depot loadouts to increase their chance of killing other players. Because acquiring certain elements in this game requires you to be in a specific level and having enough Game Points (which, I swear to Haruhi-ism, you can't get enough Game Points for every single thing you want to buy in Blacklight) means that you are forced to screw your wallet to get the stuff you need. Oh, and did I mention the DLCs in Steam are cheaper than buying seperate in the Blacklight Store? Seriously. I spent $100 on this game so far just to get the stuff I want. You're better off buying the DLCs from Steam, and even that isn't cheap to begin with. And they don't offer much. The upside to this game is that they now offer Weekly Specials, where they let free users try a specific weapon for a week and decrease the price of said weapon to about half or more, and they change the Weekly Special weapons every week. This also applies to heroes as well, so free gamers can still enjoy at least some premium items for free.

The gameplay, to be honest, is like playing Battlefield 2142 with Battlefield 3 graphics. It's simply addicting, stunning and... oh it just feels great to play this game. The map choices aren't bad. Some are big, some are small, some are just plain offensive (especially HeloDeck, where you are likely to get spawn-camped and killed). Overall, the graphics and the gameplay make up for the its' Pay-To-Win element (which is disgusting, and it might disgust gamers out there who despise Pay-To-Win games).

What do I have a say in this game? If you don't care about getting the weapons, the heroes and the loadouts to get the upperhand and if you're skillful enough, this game will please you with its gameplay and graphics. However, if you're not a fan of Pay-To-Win games, be warned as this game will do whatever it takes to screw your wallet clean.

This game stutters more than an autistic kid at a minecraft convention. But Blacklight is an amazingly fun and well designed FPS when it actually works.
