"This is not only a great example of a professional and credible free-to-play game, but it's also one of the best first-person shooters I've played. I am quite serious when I say that, too. This game is a serious FPS contender, and its freemium status should not diminish your expectations. I wholeheartedly recommend you jump in and give it a try. It'll cost only your time to give it a whirl, and I am certain that it'll be time well spent."

"Great shooting mechanics and deep customization options make for an addictive combination, and its free-to-play model makes it easy to jump into with no upfront cost."

"The matter is simple – the game is free to play and, if you take my word for it, an excellent shooter. In a perfect world, it would knock the CoD series on its ass."

About This Game

Take firefights to a futuristic new level in Blacklight: Retribution, a free-to-play FPS. See through walls with the HRV, deploy mechanized Hardsuits, and customize your weapons to dominate the opposition.

In Blacklight, mastering the futuristic tech is half of victory. You'll need to carefully balance your loadout, from the extreme customization possible in designing your firearms, to the equipment you carry and the in-match bonuses you can unlock. The Hyper Reality Visor (HRV) allows you to look through walls and spot enemies, and attack from where they aren't expecting - but be careful, because you're vulnerable while using it.

The other half of victory? Raw skill, same as it's always been. Good hunting, Agent...

PunkBuster™ Anti-Cheat from Even Balance, Inc. is required to play Blacklight Retribution. This program will be installed alongside the game client.

Key Features

  • Hardsuits - Use a variety of upgrades in each match, including calling in the hulking Hardsuit mech. Powerful but slow, this armored suit packs a one-shot, one-kill railgun and a high velocity minigun to clear rooms... fast.
  • Hyper Reality Vision - HRV Technology allows Agents to scout their enemies through the walls, pinpoint vital mission objectives, or locate weak points in an enemy Hardsuit.
  • Weapon Depots - Scattered across the battlefield are Weapon Depots that supply your team with additional ammo, heavier weapons such as a Rocket Launcher, or provide the ability to call down airstrikes and Hardsuits.
  • Free to Play! - Blacklight: Retribution is a fully Free-to-Play shooter. Earn Game Points (GP) after every match and use them to unlock various armor and weaponry for your Agent in game.
  • Customize Your Loadout - An Agent’s gun is their livelihood. Choose from 1000 different gun combinations by modifying your receivers with customizable Stock, Muzzle, Barrel, Magazine, and Scope, Camo, and Weapon Tags.
  • Protect Yourself - Whether your play style is run and gun, or survivability, or long range sniping the choice is yours to make in fully customizing your armor loadout.
  • Level Progression - Gain experience and levels through combat to unlock access to additional weapons, armor, and equipment.
  • Tons of Game Modes and Maps - Combat is engaged on a number of different 7 different game modes across 9 beautifully detailed maps. Game modes includes classics such Team Death Match, Domination, Capture the Flag, and Kill Confirmed while introducing new favorites likes Netwar.
  • Private Servers - Want to scrim with your clan mates? Challenge someone 1vs1? The private server option allows Agents to set up their own password protected server away from the pesky trolls.
  • Spectator Mode - Learn tips and tricks from the top players in Spectator mode, or simply enjoy the chaos from the best seat in the house.

I have many more hours on PS4 than PC but as intriguing as this game may have seemed, I don't have the paitence to sit there for 8 hours farming enough credits to permanently buy one single gun with a couple attachments to go with it, then comes other guns (like a sniper rifle), armor, gear all the good stuff. You can play just fine without spending a dime, but trust me you will be at a disadvantage. All equipment has stats, and a lot of which can be tailored in a way that gives you a big recoil, damage, health, or whatever advantage over players that don't have similar equipment.
This game is pay to win and anyone that disagrees has to educate them selves on what pay to win really means.

The game play is okay for a F2P. Graphics are meh. This game is good to cure a couple hours of your boredom, that's about it.

Blacklight is still a good game but it needs more attention from the developers.

It used to be a great game, and i was and still am very passionate about this game. I played it for countless hours every single day pre parity and have accumalated over 410 hrs on this once amazing game from pre parity. Then the parity patch hit, and it was the worst thing that ever happened to the game, then i quit. I came back recently and played for a week only to realize HSL has not done anything to fix the game. There are so many problems with the game such as constant teleporting despite near perfect ping. Like i said before the parity patch ruined the game, it removed recoil, helmets, elemental ammo, premades, global chat, everything that made this game an amazing FPS game. This game is NOT pay2win and has great customization, and this game has great potential as well. However, its devs have abandoned the game, not fixing major issues such as the non existent recoil making this game a no skill game meaning anyone can dominate once they learn the basics. Once again, this game was unique with aspects such as HRV, and its wide customization, but honestly, this game is now garbage compared to its former self aka pre parity. I still think that this game is good, not as good as it was though. 6.5/10, and honestly would recommend this game because its still a very sold and decent game, but in this review, I dont recommend because hopefully devs see this and do something to fix the game, Plz save BLR. PS.I also spent my first $10 on the game just to get some skins and to support the game.

Such a shame what happened to this game

If you didn't play it in 2012, maybe try it, you might like it. If you DID play it in 2012, however, and want to see what Blacklight looks like now...

Coming back to this game 4 years later (having played in 2012) is like a punch to the nuts. It actually physically hurts to have this "thing" launch in place of what was once Blacklight.

I don't know where to begin because It seems like every single element of the game has taken a step back or been made worse.

First of all, what was wrong with the old in-game menu and UI? Everything was so nice and modern looking, not to mention had a proper layout. Now it looks like you reverted to some early mock-up UI from 2010? Why did that happen?

The graphics of the game took a significant turn for the worse. I have the same PC I had in 2012, and back then I could not run the game on high. Even had problems on medium on some maps. Now, everything on max, even all the effects, game still looks worse than it did back then on medium.

Then - the changes to the attachment unlocks, having to unlock the same attachment for every weapon over and over again. Really upped the grind to unbearable levels.

Playercount is down greatly (largely a result of what I wrote above) and there are only 5-6 servers active at any given moment, usually rotating the same 2-3 maps. Boring.

Some items were simply removed from the game, and as a result you got a helmet which is now unobtainable as a consolation prize. I also see I have received some rewards and perks for having played all the way back in 2012. Listen, Perfect World, or Hardsuit Labs, or whatever your name now is. The best rewards you could've given your oldschool players would be to at least keep this game the way it was, since you clearly weren't capable of making it any better.

This game was up to 2014, in my opinion, a better and more polished shooter than CS:GO. They could have reduced the pay-to-win by making only cosmetic items buyable, ditched the console versions, polished up the balance and the player count would have soared. They could have had a great competitive scene. But instead they done rekt everything that was good about the game and now it's only a hollow shell of its former self.

I'm deleting you, "Blacklight". I'll prefer to remember you for what you were than to look at you the way you are. Good bye.

Blacklight offers a wide variety of modes to play. It mainstays at Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, Domination and modes like Siege, Kill Confirmed and some others to add a bit of spice to the mix for players who want something a little different.
Also, since Blacklight is based on a core server browser, it makes it easy for the player to choose the gametype that he desires as well as quick match option for those who want to get right into the action!
There are around to 18 maps currently to choose from and that makes it a fairly decent amount of selection for any kind of player out there.
The gameplay is complimented by excellent visuals and sound design and the weapons have an amazing impact with quietly a general balance overall filled with impressive variety.
The only negative thing that could be possibly stated is the matter of time that takes to unlock weapons/customization/etc with the game points (GP) given after a match.

Overall score i would give it a 9/10.

I have more than a thousand hours in this game (off Steam.)

It's pretty good, HRV is a good and balanced mechanic.
Hitreg isn't too good, servers can be a bit laggy.
The only thing this game is suffering from is a lack of players.
For the most part, the player base is very, very small.
Even players like I who haven't touched it in a while still recognize many faces.
However, the game itself is one of the best FPS that I've ever played.

Progression is completely fine and ZCoins are for the most part, entirely optional.
I started playing it when I got bored of CoD and hell was it a refreshing experience.
Would drop another thousand hours on this game.

Pay to win game. Pure and simple. You want other guns or characters? Pay for them or lease them for a ridiculously short time for a LOT of ingame money. The game is fun if you get new guns or other mercs. But it gets boring extremely fast due to the fact that you are stuck with the default char and the default gun. Rubish, this game is. Avoid it. Way better non P2W shooters out there.

back in the day this game was the bomb!!! i played a lot of it, and i even spent my fare share of money on this game. Then one day a new company took over, and all of a sudden i just couldnt play the game any more. not because the gakme was bad, in fact the new developers had imporved gameplay. Why do i not play anymore? because when the new developers took over, i lost all my items i had spent money on. I asked them for the items back, but there was no response. i asked for money back, no response. I then tackled steam, but of course i didnt get a refund. it was at this point that the bad taste in my mouth could never be washed away.

I will say one thing, this game has amazing gameplay, it is fast-paced, fun and engaging, but i would take caution with micro-transactions in this game, as you could potentially lose items like i did. I personally would reccomend this, but the experience i went through just annoyed me so much that i have just cant recommend it, though by all means pick it up if you wanted a good first person shooter with a fair business model and engaging gameplay.

Its typical F2P principe, you can buy yourself Weapons, Armor or Heros to have a advantage, but this isnt the annoying part of the game, if you play a F2P shooter you should expect that other may have bought things to give themselves a advantage, thats completly normal and fine because the Game Developers still need to earn money. The actual problem of the game is the lack of Anti-Cheat-Protection sometimes and the fact that the game is pretty much dead, There are so few players now even tho the game is really fun and looks more than decent, it looks better than probably about 90% of every other F2P Shooter. The Game Mechanics makes the game even more fun and the fact that it kinda supports Bhop like Quake Live, meaning that there are no strafes but I noticed that you get a bit more speed with it, at least thats what I think.
In Short:
Pro: Good Graphics | Fun Game Mechanics | Bhop | Weapon Customization | Great Maps | Many Game Modes | You can give yourself a advantage with real money
Contra: Lacks of Anti-Cheat | Basically dead/only a few hundred players(!) | You can give yourself a advantage with real money

I'd still play it if there would be more players.
