About This Game

A project over eleven years in the making, Cortex Command has rich 2D pixel graphics coupled with an extremely detailed physics engine, which allows for highly replayable and emergent real-time action. There is also a turn-based strategic campaign mode which ties the tactical fights together, featuring persistent terrains that will accumulate the battle scars, debris, and bunker ruins through your entire campaign.

Choose from several unique technology factions, each featuring their own sets of expendable soldier bodies, mechas, weapons, tools, and landing craft. Protect your brain, mine the gold, and destroy the enemy cortex in his bunker complex!

Key Features:

  • Fully destructible environments - The gold you need to excavate is sprinkled throughout the terrain of each scene. Use special digging tools to blast your way into the dirt and debris. All the pieces of bodies and ships from your struggles will fall to the ground and permanently add to the battlefield. Get more powerful (and expensive) diggers and you can even tunnel into your enemies' bunkers from below!

  • Strategic metagame campaign – The intense, real-time tactical battles are put in a greater strategic context in the Campaign mode, thus giving each battle meaning and consequence. The gold-rich terrains on the planet and the defensive bunkers you build to defend them are persistent from fight to fight. This means there will be layers of debris, bunker ruins, tunnels, and corpses piled up in layers, telling the history of each place throughout each campaign played.

  • In-game buying menu - At any time and place during the game, bring up a powerful menu to order new bodies and equipment, all delivered at the location and by the transport ship of your choosing. Rockets are cheaper but unreliable and harder to land. Drop ships are far more expensive but can quickly deploy entire groups of puppets onto difficult terrain. Ships and equipment returned to the TradeStar are refunded to your account.

  • Build your own bunker - At the start of most missions, you are able to take your time and build your own command bunker from scratch. Easily design twisting tunnels and place doors, traps, and turrets to thwart your enemies' intrusions! Pre-deploy and equip bodies in and around your installation to prepare yourself for your objectives. Don't spend too much though, or you won't have enough funds left when the mission starts!

  • Four-player cooperative and/or versus multiplayer - Gather your friends and plug in those game controllers! Play skirmish or campaign missions with or against up to three of your buddies. 2 vs 2, 1 vs. 3, 4 vs. the CPU - it's up to you! (rhyme intended). Flexible control settings allow you to use the keyboard, keyboard + mouse, or any generic game controller you can find and plug in.

  • Built-in editors and modding - Several in-game editors allow you to easily create your own stuff. The game's engine is built to make it very simple to modify and add your own content. Design your own missions, guys, ships, weapons, tools, bombs, and shields - and easily share them with your friends. Join and download some fantastic mods from the community at the Data Realms Fan Forums.

  • Cortex Command is still being improved - The campaign mode and missions are fully playable, if not in a completely polished state yet. If you buy the game today, you will also have access to any and all future versions (not including sequels!)

Anyone who has ever, truly cared about the RTS genre should want to play this game because it has every thing going for it. If you loved Steel Soldiers, you'll adore this.

The original story line and concepts are amazing, the units varied and creative, the guns are very unique and every unit has a jetpack.

The units in particular have sometimes amazing AI (units in squad will go prone if they are in contact and the unit behind them is shooting, stop friendly fire with HE) to not so good (jumping in to a cavern with a squad sometimes ends with an AI unit jetpacking in to a wall and staying there).

want to position a sniper or rocketeer on a nice big spot height? Jet pack! In trouble and need CAS? Dropship loaded with bombs or rocket full of bombs as a huge missile!

Every time you play, you find yourself wondering where the hell this game has been hiding and why no one came up with it earlier and where there are other devs with ideas this original and colourful.

This game has the most unique gameplay ever. No other game comes close to the details and physics of this game. The destruction in this game is amazing. If you hate this work of art, you sir, are drunk.

Quite possibly the most perfect example of unrealized potential.

Cortex Command feels very much like a pet project that some developer put a lot of love and effort to make a freeware linux game in which it'd be possible to overlook every single one of these flaws. But the price is $20! It might be worth $5 to play in the sandbox and see what might have been.

The control scheme is so incredibly broken - for every action except movement and cycling between your forces, you need to navigate a radial menu. Reloading? Switching weapons? Buying more troops? RADIAL MENU. The control of aiming is almost impossible with a mouse or keyboard - gamepad is effectively a requirement.

Menu navigation in the middle of an action game is just such a huge no no.

I gave it a honest try. Nope. UI is a mess, controls are awful. I dunno, I didn't like it.

Interesting idea but it lacks official support for using the workshop to download mods.
It also has no real storyline. No online multiplayer. Gets boring after a few hours of playtime.
On a positive note, the graphical and auditory content is fair and fits into the game like it should.

Feels like this game is an early alpha at best. It is unpolished, the tutorial isn't even helpful, the controls are clunky and the overall start into this game is fairly difficult. I wouldn't recommend buying it for this price.

Movement of awkward, but as you play the game that becomes less of a problem. The sad thing is the Meta score doesn't do this game justice. At the time of its review alot of the features were not polished thus resulting in a horrible score. This game is great for those who like games like Battlezone and Mount and Blade. A combination of s

I've had this game for over a year, and the physics-based strategy to it all is just... fun. The first time watching an enemy lander explode overhead its base and raining destruction down on it is an unforgettable moment. Hitting your opponent in the legs or head or even gun is incredibly satisfying. Especially when leading an army. The AI is unreliably good at times, but it's not so bad that it cripples the gameplay. Overall, it's pure sidescrolling rts goodness.

One of the most fun, least known games. Its ealiy moddable. Just cause its 2d doesn't mean its bad, in fact thats on of the things that makes it better! There isn't that much of a "Story Campain", but it has a great conquest campain. Sometimes its fun just to watch people rag doll down a cliff after having their head shot off.
