Mayday Friday: "Big Patch, Big Testing, and BIG TOURNAMENT"

Squid changes, skyball changes, and more being tested right now!

Hello everyone,

Mayday Friday is back after its hiatus and we have a lot going on! As you've noticed we have an entirely new game mode that has a tournament coming up where you can win exclusive titles and eight copies of the game!

That's not all that's happening though, we are testing some new changes in the dev app. You can see them all here and get in on the action! Squids, mobulas, and Skyball will never be the same again!

Coming up is what our team is working on and our player of the week!

Has been tracking down performance issues that were introduced when we upgraded to Unity 5.2, and investigating what we can do to fix them.  Also prototyping a couple of new Alliance weapons for the remaining factions.

Working on Ambush and prototyping the new class Special Abilities for Alliance.

Prototyping new guns for yesha and arashi.

Working on new UI. See a special sneak peak here

Press outreach, store marketing audits, and testing.

Last and never least, our player of the week!
Congrats to Deargdue for winning a free item of his choice.
He's been an awesome player with suchs applauds as:
"Player went above and beyond instructing crew."

Low expectations...blown away just...amazing game and better than that as of right now 9/25/2016 it has a great playerbase who for the most part take there time to teach you or are very understanding when you make mistakes. Chances are the expereinced people are still learning things that the new guys are learning. I could rave all day about it but i doubt you read the entire thing so all i will say now is just buy wont regret it.

Guns of Icarus is a great team driven game, you have to communicate with your team or you will fall from the sky in a ball of fire. The community is awesome, they want to teach and contribute so that the game has a bright future. Guns of Icarus has active developers that test, balance and implement things constantly. Guns of Icarus has community run events every weekend and also tournaments that are run by the developers, the game as a whole is very underrated and I really hope to see you in the skies.

This game has a very good people who play this game and very few trolls/hackers the only problem I have is very few people play this game but its a good trade off for awesome gameplay mechanics and very nice people in the game. For a avid PC gamer this is a great game to pick up. Worth the 3/20 dollars.

76/100 ~ great game

Really fun game. I love being a pilot and crashing onto other ships.
I love being an engineer and fixing ships.
I love being a gunman and shooting other ships down.

They just really just advertise this game more. Maybe take the route TF2 took and make it F2P but if you bought it, you get some bonuses. It's really, really fun but it just needs something new! More classes? I don't know. JUST ADD SOMETHING THAT WON'T ♥♥♥♥ OFF THE COMMUNITY.

An excellent concept for a game that works well.
I played it for a while and it runs ok on my complete trash pc.
This was one of my favorite games way back when it was popular.
It was exciting to be able to run around on my ship repairing and shooting canons.
And, if I felt like it, I could even fly my own ship!
It was truly fun.

Only problem...
Its pretty much dead now.

Overall positive but I'll look at both sides.

What does GoI Online do right?

Great team mechanics - if you're looking for a LAN party game, something to play with a small group of friends online or if you just want to enjoy a team game where you have to work and communicate with other players, it's a perfect game for you. You seriously cannot win in this game without co-ordination between crew members, so it's perfect for that sort of dynamic.

Relatively good graphics - the textures are nothing special in GoI, but a lot of the video effects used can give a great atmosphere. Not only that, but the entire design of the game is fantastic. Every ship and map has its own unique look and feel.

Awesome sound design - There isn't a lot of music in the game, but where it does feature, it's great. Sound effects are also awesome. When battles get intense, you feel it, especially when you have good headphones.

Great concept - the actual idea of GoI is awesome and unique, and something I'm surprised more companies and developers haven't tried to capitalise on. More games like it are springing up, but GoI is still a very unique and exclusive experience. There isn't a game quite like this anywhere else

Now, the downsides.

Low population - probably GoI's most prominent flaw is its low player count. There simply aren't a lot of people playing this game compared to when it was first released, and that's especially bad when you've got a multiplayer game where players are far more valuable than AI. I've experienced instances where one lobby has left and disbanded, only for all of the same players to form up in a different lobby since nobody else is online. You'll see this happen a lot and it can be monotonous.

Long grind - you do get levels, achievements and collectibles in this game, and gaining all of them can be brutal and long. Your levels are divided between three different classes, so you have to level all three to stay competitive, meaning you can't just focus one class and hope for the best. You will spend a lot of time in this game putting effort in and still getting little as a result other than the actual gameplay experience.

Lack of depth - GoI has a solid framework, but behind that, there isn't that much. Little to no lore, no expansion on regions or ships, and also a very basic meta. Some guns counter some stuff, others counter other stuff. It's as simple as that 90% of the time. No combinations or workarounds like in other games like this. Get ready to pick a style and keep it, chances are everyone else is playing the same way. This is also an issue when you consider the price of this game. I was fortunate enough to receive this game as a gift, but I have friends who refuse to buy the game simply because some things (lore, story, gameplay depth) aren't there, and don't justify the price tag for them.

Overall, GoI is a fantastic game, but it is lacking in features which I wish the developers would work on. And honestly, considering the lack of a large playerbase and the lack of effort being put towards the game by the devs, I wouldn't be surprised if this game goes F2P in the near future. Personally, I think it should, this game needs an influx of new players badly. Still, a fun game, and it definitely has features you may be looking for.

Only worth purchasing when greatly on sale. Guns of Icaraus as a ton of untapped potential; for the first 30-60 minutes of air-based swashbuckling fun, you'll love almost every minute. Panicking as your airship bursts into flames or your clueless captain steers for a sheer cliff wall is truly delightful, but the fun wears thin as you realize just how shallow the game is.

The first hour of gameplay is functionally identical as your 50th hour of gameplay. And, in this game's case, that's not praise.

Let me tell you a story.

There exists a game that people really enjoyed playing. It is about airships and artillery – a fictional take on 19th century aerial warfare. Battles were fierce and intense. Success relied on knowledge, planning, mechanical skill and decision making. But most important of all: teamwork – knowing your role, communicating and working together like cogs in a machine. The community, comprised of hundreds of the game’s regulars, saw great potential in it due to its depth. A year or two went by like that.

However, there was a problem. What the community wanted to see and what the game developers wanted to make were two very different things. The community wanted more of the same (good) stuff. Same game mechanics, but tweak a few numbers, perhaps to the point of adding new content. Instead, the developers pushed out new mechanics, introduced unpolished game modes, and threw the game off balance with major changes.

People stayed on for a while. It was not all bad. Yet, they slowly realized it was no longer the game that they enjoyed playing. The developers were able to see this and knew they had to do something. Their highest priority was to fix the things they broke. But with their hands tied up on an upcoming expansion, there was only so much they could do. Unfortunately, many players remain unsatisfied with the changes. It was only a matter of time before they moved on.

This game was great once. However, its golden age is over. As for the future, we shall see….
