8/10 Glad I bought it!!!

Yeah, Yeah. I know. It is not as grand as The Witcher 3. Or even The Witcher 2.

But, since I own all 3 games, I wanted to start with number 1. And I am so glad I did.
The combat is rough around the edges, the controls a bit clunky. But the story and lore are amazing. And for as old as this game is, the visuals are very nice. Not "amazing" graphics, like TW 3, but for it's age, and keeping in mind what most games back then looked like, they did a damn good job with the look and feel of this game.

I don't know how to explain why I like this game so well. Perhaps because I am older, and I never got to play this game when it first came out. I like the quests, I like the story, I like the lore. And I will keep playing this game, because I do enjoy it so much, and it is so nostalgic for me. I really can't explain it. It just hit my heart and stuck there, in a good way.

But I do look forward to putting more time into TW 2 and then TW 3. And I feel this game is giving me a good education to prepare me for the next games in the series. Worth it, especially if you get it as part of an on- ale bundle with TW 2 and TW 3 like I did. Though I honestly can say I would be just as happy if I had paid full price.

Mileage may vary. Widely. But I really feel that if you are going to play either or both of the sequels, you really should start here and play this one too.

A poor game made popular because it was the only CRPG in the barren years between Neverwinter Nights 2 and Dragon Age: Origins. The only reason to go to this entry in the Witcher series is if you've already played the other two immensly superior games and want to see what this one was like. Otherwise, you can skip this one and go straight to 2.

What the game does well is tell a story and paint characters. However, the story is spread over 70 hours of game and progresses slowly. Trimming could have easily shaved 20 hours off of the game and improved pacing.

The story is, however a well written plot about Gerault's adventures in the Kingdom of Timeria after his death by pitchfork and return from the Wyld Hunt. The impression is that he is only one player in a series of events happening around him, he can change how they happen but his interest is only single-minded in solving the problem which brought him to Timeria in the first place. The factions and people are not good or bad, all sides are have their grievances and all of them have skeletons. I did enjoy the feeling that there were no genuine good guys he aliged with and his enemies were not necessarily bad guys. Gerault is dull but he grows on you after 70 hours.

One thing, innovative for its time, were the way choices mattered in the story. Choices would dramatically change how the story progresses, who your friends and enemies were, and what encounters you had later. At the time, this was neat to see. Alas, Witcher 2 with its branching chapters has made this seem small.

On the bad, would be much of if not the entire gameplay and engine. The game was built on the Neverwinter Nights 2 engine. Though stability has improved a lot since the game was released, it was an unoptomized resource hog and still requires a lot of resources for a game as old as it is. The gameplay is a case of tolerate it or hate it. I doubt you would really love it. Sword attacks are made with a series of timed strikes which get annoying to learn and when you do learn how to do it, you don't feel satisfied. Status effects and potions are extremely overpowered. You will spend a lot of time in this game going through your inventory and making potions, oils, and bombs. While I did enjoy the whole - Gerault has to research his enemies find out what poiton/oil build works well against them - I did not enjoy how it would make even the more trivial encounters time consuming.

In all, it was a game which was enjoyed when it was released but has held up poorly since. I would not recommend you play it unless you are a Witcher fan and want to see where the game series began after you've already played the next two games.

Normally I am a hater of the RPG, MMO and Fantasy genres, I don't see any point in them and find them more than boring and a waste of not only money but also my time. The first part of The Witcher franchise, same as the franchise itself is completely different though. I got it in The Witcher Trilogy and was very surprised to enjoy it, you can find it in the category “Story Rich” which serves this game very well. The game is more than impressive for the year 2007 and still very enjoyable in 2016 (Review posted in 2016). The way you interact with Characters can have impact on the story, them and even other Characters. At the first walk through you can expect to not understand much which is fine since I felt the same way, but it's a lovely game that I love to replay from time to time and notice more and more detail in this game each time I replay it and also understand way more what's going on. If you're inexperienced with The Witcher you can expect to get about 25 hours out of this game while if you know this game already and know where to go then you can expect to get about 17 hours including side quests, looting, selling, crafting and so on. This game has an excellent Replay Value, if you're not a fan of this genre same as me I would give it a go anyway, it is only 7.99€ and you can even trade it on sites like TF2Outpost for 1 CSGO or TF2 Key which is about 2.25€ or if you're really greedy then wait for a sale and get it for 1.19€. Don't look at my hours since this is not my first Steam Account and I have waaay more hours on the old one, I really do recommend you trying it! I really didn't expect to get as much from the game as I got, today my favourite game Franchise is definitively The Witcher.

I sent a pic of the ho card you get after sleeping with Abigail to my bae, telling him I think I regretted making Geralt sleep with her. His response changed my life:

"Never regret a slay."

Also this game's really good.

I absolutely love this game, it's challenging and doesnt forgive you, some very intruiging story stuff and it's overall a fun game. But in saying that, I dont think it's, well, a good one. Again, I love this game and i'm about to play through it my second time, but i'm hard pressed to call it a good game. Its rough edges make it a tough game to play. If you want to get into the witcher series, buy it, no doubt, but be careful. This was this studios first game, afterall.

Well, i really enjoyed this game storywise. Definitely. Every decision I made felt important, difficult and as it had huge impact. Also the world is nice and diverse and has a huge lore, thanks to the author of the books this is baed on. But it is not perfect and I think there are some little holes in the story, but that's not a big problem tho.
The characters are also really good, some more or less though. The graphics are totally okay for a 2007 game from a developer nobody really knew for anything then. And well, quests. Most quests are damn good and leave you with a decision which has impact on the story, even if it was just a side quest. But there are a lot of search and kill quests too, which are annoying a** f***, although I recommend doing them. This and killing every creature you see is important. Really. And alchemy, oh my good. Alchmey saves your life as in no other RPG I played, not kidding. These things and an understanding of the weird combat system (which is not bad, but not even good either, just unnecessarily complicated) are the essence of getting through the game. I have to admit, I did not do all these little side quests and I didn't kill all monsters nor did I focus on alchemy, but on the story related side- and main-quests which left me low-levelled with bad weapons and just a hand full of potions and ingredients in the last chapter. So I needed to cheat. Shame on me. Next time I'll keep these things in mind and so should you, because this game can be very hard some times, especially with this weird combat sytsem. But enough of that. If you look for a story-driven RPG with a dynamic world influenced by your opinions... GO FOR IT! I recommend this for any RPG-Fan even if it has its downsides. I look forward to play part 2 now. And always go for alchemy, lel :D

Edit: lol, I forgot one special thing about this. SEX. Well, it is kind of weird since you collect sex-artworks like trophies and you still can tell y girl you love her like noone else but well... Just saying. It's a nice thing though. That might be the reason for the FSK18 in Germany. btw sorry for bad english, long text and after 1 am, lel

It’s a serious slog to get through this game. The controls are practically unusable. Everything feels like it is bound to a random number generator. Try playing through a game where your success or failure hinges on depends on you being given the right number five thousand times in a row. I’m impressed how much they improved with the Witcher 2 which is a great game. But this game is broken and boring. That being said I don't recommend it unless you are the most hard-core Witcher fan.

I recomend this game even though....

Terrible dialogue writing and voice acting, Voice actors sounded like they were phoning the lines in and the words that came out of their mouths was as bad or worse than many a B rated movie.

Combat is one of the worst I have ever dealt with in any game, Not only do you have 2 swords but you also have 3 combat styles for each and you have to memorize what mob requires what sword and combat style but you also have the QTE to just use the swords. Seriously QTE to use a weapon? That was never a good idea to begin with and made combat dreadful.

Animations are a tad wonky at best and downright bad at average. Nothing like watching a knight run and give a report while everyone else is standing still in a cutscene or Triss' hair is doing it's own thing. Mostly the game is at it's best here except geralt when in combat and his weaving and bobbing like someone who has had 12 drinks too many.

Mobs of enemies and use of combat in a game more suited for story rather than combat was a mistake, there is a rich story being told and broken up because "need combat" reasons rather than make the combat a part of the story and something special. Be prepared to kill thousands of drowners just because you are in act 4 swamps and want to collect an ingredient. This game could have had almost no combat and be a great game, it's built into the story. Make the monsters rare and a challenge.

Kikimore queen level... What in the (rhymes with)flock were they thinking and how the flock did that pass beta. Whoever made that level needs a swift kick in the groin and then more until he is sterile. Yeah need to be in the right spot or you will die even if you are right next to the right spot and have as much reason for dying as if you were in the right spot does. And the queen? will remove hitpoints not by normal combat but via script so fighting it is fuile even if you have a godmode cheat.

Yeah it's flaws are deep and I barely touched them but it is the start for a much longer story in the 3 witcher games and it does have some good stories to tell in itself and once you get used to the flaws it becomes enjoyable.. except kikimore queen and act IV drowners.

After pumping 100 hours into Wild Hunt, i decided to try the first game. And im sooooo glad i did. Chapter 1 was rather slow but after that it picks up fast. Combat was good, quest system was really well done, awesome characters and voice acting, and vast choices and consiquences. I recommend anyone hesitant to play this after starting with the 3rd game to give it a go, you wont be disappointed. Strongly recommend

Plus you can sleep with like 20 people hahaha

Good on CD for making such a good game as their first title

[tl;dr] Choices and consequences, depravity, wars, fanatics, curses, monsters, sorceresses, sex, booze, fisstech, gambling, fistfights and evil hermits! Now Geralt can be part of some, or all of it. The choice is yours to make.

“His name was Geralt of Rivia, a proffesional monster slayer” thats the first quote .. and an epic cinematic scene will follow; introduces you to a tale that will continue throughout your playthough. Like most RPG's, your decisions influence the story you'll experience, no rights or wrongs simply advance as you see fit.

---info---

As a Witcher you got five signs: Aard, Yrden, Igni, Quen, Axii each has a specific action. Futhermore, you have a steel sword for humans and a silver sword for monsters, each sword have 3 fighting styles: Strong, Fast, Group. Combat is click-based. You also can craft potions, blade coatings and bombs.

Graphics are alright really but I had some FPS drop issues; even with high-end graphics card, mostly on Chapter 3 though. Soundtrack is great. A Digital comic (short point & click game) and a game editor are included.

/edit: There are two new adventures (dlc) made by CDProjekt and five made by the community. You can select each at New Game.

If you're into RPGs, you need to play the series.

This is where it started, as far as games are concerned and it shows. The controls are a little wonky, descriptions are difficult to understand at times and you'll spend a lot of time in the Wiki for clues. It's brutally difficult until about level 15 or so, then you start to feel a bit like a 'real' Witcher. Faster, more powerful than the humans around you; which is a good thing as you'll do a lot more fighting of them, than monsters as you navigate the boiling point of a race war between the Humans and essentially every other sentient race (Your typical fantasy groups: Dwarves, Elves, etc..).

For nearly a decade old, the game still looks good, and can still challenge modern hardware. With an i5, 16 GB of RAM, an SSD, and a GTX 970 in some sections at 1080p (Super sampled up to 4k) I'll drop below 45 FPS YMMV).

If you recently picked up The Witcher 3, I do recommend grabbing this one, and the second as well to get the whole story, though be warned. This one is kinda clunky, and meant solely for the PC. It's very mouse and keyboard heavy, and a lot of the actions are based on 'old school' die rolls. Did you dodge that attack, did you successfully parry, did your Sword hit its mark? Who the hell knows! The second one is closer to the 'modern' title (3) in that it is more easily played with a controller IMO, as you're met with QTE, and a lot of block, parry, dodge, attack segments.

What do you get for trying this one out first, and beating it?
- A lot of answers and lore.
- Better starting armor and weapons
- An imported save file that changes some of the world through your previous actions
- Knowledge about what the hell is going on in 2 and 3...

All in all, this game is worth it, even at its $10 price point ~10 years later. (I bought it twice: first on Disc, then here). Sit back, relax, and enjoy a good solid 40-50 hours of game play (~25 if you are really good, and rush past everything, and don't enjoy the world.

Random Info: This is essentially the European release of the game, not the censored US one, so the 'romance' cards DO contain nudity.

Pros:
-Intriguing plot
-Morally grey RPG
-Excellent voice acting
-Excellent music

Cons:
-Poorly designed combat system
-Plot pacing problems - chapter 2 is hell, chapter 4 is random
-Dated graphics
-Occasional questline glitches
-Plot ultimately self contained and skippable

Overall: This review is my first time playing any Witcher game. And I can honestly say, it's fun. It's dated and it has its rough edges, but it's fun. But play for the plot and the RPG choices, not the combat. And it's the first part of the Witcher series of games. I haven't read the books or played any of the other games, but this game has made me want to. Apparently they improve on almost everything.

That said, this game has a horribad combat system. It's just... the worst. Crafting is just relevant enough to be an irritating sidequest, and honestly, the gameplay just feels unpolished. That's a pretty severe criticism, and is a deal breaker for a lot of people.

If you can look past the gameplay issues, the story is amazing. Your choices revolve around one of three possible endings, and the plot has some great twists and turns to it. Ultimately, though, this game's plot is self contained and is only mildly referenced in the second Witcher, and not at all in the third. Thus, you can easily just look up a plot synopsis on this game and be good to go.

So really, it's a toss up. This is not the best RPG you'll ever play. You don't lose much by skipping it. But it's still a solid RPG. Decide for yourself.

Bottom Line: Fifty fifty. By itself, apart from all the rest of the series, it's worth playing. Grab it on a sale if you want to play through it for the experience.

I knew I wanted to play through the Witcher games, but was not sure about whether I wanted to skip the first one due to it apparently being very dated. However, I decided to just go for it as I am a sucker for a good story and that is one of the most important aspects of gaming for me. Well, Witcher 1 did not let me down at all. The combat feels odd at first but you get used to it extremely quickly. I do not regret starting and finishing Witcher 1 :) Its now sent me on to Witcher 2 and I have even started reading the books because I found the lore fascinating. If you are unsure like I was, just give it a chance - you will not regret getting to experience this beautiful fantasy world.

The perfect amnesiac simulator where you can sleep with more than twenty women in the game, and simply chalk up your erratic behavior to "I'm sorry (insert companion), I didn't know we were together." when you get in trouble. Same goes for the combat system. "IVesemir, I forgot how to fight like a Witcher. How could I with these terrible combat mechanics?"

Overall, I fully recommend this game if you want more insight into the mind of the most interesting man in the Northern Realms, Geralt of Rivia.

Well, I did it, I played through The Witcher: Enhanced Edition after beating W3: blood & Wine, in the year of our lord, 2016, and honestly, I thought it held up pretty well! Setting aside the massive improvements the series has made since its humble beginnings, there's still a lot of good story content here. There's a surprisingly high amount of set up to things in W2 and W3. A lot of care was taken to create this world. If you're interested to see where the series came from, it's worth a playthrough.

WARNING:
The first act is still a very painful one, and there's a lot of running, and a lot of quests that boil down to 'collect x thing' although those are optional. If you're looking to get into the series, please start with W3.

This is one of the best story driven RPGs ever made.

The story is great, really top writing with a twist at the end you could not guess because of the structure of narrative. Combat system is kind of limited but works well enough to get the action going. Visually it looks great for 8 years old game, art direction is 100% and with perfect music scores gives incredible atmospheric feel.

Now it's time to get going and play The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition.
