So i Got This Game After Getting Witcher 3 and Finishing it + all achivements and i gotta say this game suprised me, i wasn't expecting some things to be this good, so the best thing in this entire game is the story, its beautifully told and it marks the start of a legendery trilogy, the biggest thing that completely destroyed the experience for me is the combat, its so un-responsive sometimes and very hard to get used to, the combat stances are not a bad idea but the excuation is down right terrible, the grapchics are average at best for a 2008 game i recommend checking nexus for mods to improve the game's grapchics, as for the interface the inventory system wasn't that great and it can be really hard to find anything, overall this game gets a 7.5/10 from me, excellent story but held back by the terrible combat & some gameplay mechanics i recommend buying this game only if you are intersted in the witcher story and if you do buy it start the game on easy diffucalty it will save you alot of time

The Witcher certainly has some rough edges, especially the awkward combat, but the other roleplaying mechanics, including the alchemy system, character progression, and the consequences of choices more than make up for it.

This is a respectful sequel to Sapkowski's books, but doesn't rely on the existing stories too much, meaning the uninitiated can enjoy this game as well.

very ropey quest system the day/night means the quest characters are never where you expect so you have to run off find somewhere to rest and guess what time of the day or night they might be there meaning you have to go through half a dozen level transitions to get between two points. Then sometimes it's raining which makes another reason why you can't find them. v.frustrating at times. It's overly complex and clunky & hard to figure out while there is a lot of content which would be a good thing it is buggy couldn't complete some missions because there is only one inventory slot for trophys and I got attacked by the wolf & wyvern at the same time but lost the wolf head somewhere in the swamp and couldn't find it later to claim the prize. Sometimes quest items aren't reserved so you can accidentally use them up in potion brewing again leaving you unable to complete quests and get the all important gold. in spite of this I was about to say it's just about do-able but at about level 3 the game kept crashing in the salamandra hideout at about the time where more gfx are slowly introduced eg. an animated sheild and runes on the sword blades at that point the game kept crashing at the most inconvenient point in the thick of some of the more difficult intense clashes so it became a pia to keep reloading it I turned down the settings a bit but couldn't figure out wtf was the problem so I'm skipping the rest of it to try witcher 2 as I got them both for dirt in a sale might come back to it later but it's hard to recommend. I completely missed the existence of this game until it was on sale but that hasn't turned out to be such a terrible thing.

This is the game which CD Projekt started a legend and become legend themselves. Little company from Poland and now one the most respected and loved company in gaming sector. It's their first game and despite the restrictions of the Bioware's Aurora's engine they nailed it. 8 years passed from its release but none changed: This game is solid as a rock.

This is one hell of a game. If you are playing the first time be sure that you will love this game if you like RPG's.

Also if i strongly recommend to read to books. In fact read them before playing this game. Believe me it will enhance your gameplay deeply.

25 hours on record and I'm still not done. I have the other two games; Assassins of Kings and Wild Hunt in my library but refuse to play them until i complete this one.
The Enhanced Edition fixs most of the issues that the original release had and even though I still experiance random crashes it doesnt happen nearly enough for me to not recommend this game.

I wasn't sure if I'd like this game based on some of the reviews but after I started playing and really got into it this is easily one of my top favorite rpgs. The storyline is pretty awesome and though the combat may not be as intense as some other games it is still challenging and fun. This game has a very rich lore and the quests and gameplay I found to be pretty awesome. This is somewhat of a older game but like they say it's an oldie but a goodie.

Honestly for a long time I didn't want go into the Witcher universe. I have so much lore from different fantasy worlds in my mind, I didn't want to bother with this one (though it's certainly unique because of its Slavic mythology). But then Witcher 3 came out and most gamers say it's an amazing game and the game devs DLC policy is superb. Now I'm itching to play Witcher 3, but I decided to start from the very beginning, playing the first Witcher. The story is nice, but the gameplay mechanics are a bit weird. My final verdict would be, if you are like me and want to play Witcher 3 with some background knowledge of Witcher 1 and 2, then just watch a "Let's Play". Better yet, read the books. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=753413469 http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=753413786

Feels a tad bit to linear to me as far as how you are "allowed" to play the game is concerned.

[tl;dr] Choices and consequences, depravity, wars, fanatics, curses, monsters, sorceresses, sex, booze, fisstech, gambling, fistfights and evil hermits! Now Geralt can be part of some, or all of it. The choice is yours to make.

“His name was Geralt of Rivia, a proffesional monster slayer” thats the first quote .. and an epic cinematic scene will follow; introduces you to a tale that will continue throughout your playthough. Like most RPG's, your decisions influence the story you'll experience, no rights or wrongs simply advance as you see fit.

---info---

As a Witcher you got five signs: Aard, Yrden, Igni, Quen, Axii each has a specific action. Futhermore, you have a steel sword for humans and a silver sword for monsters, each sword have 3 fighting styles: Strong, Fast, Group. Combat is click-based. You also can craft potions, blade coatings and bombs.

Graphics are alright really but I had some FPS drop issues; even with high-end graphics card, mostly on Chapter 3 though. Soundtrack is great. A Digital comic (short point & click game) and a game editor are included.

/edit: There are two new adventures (dlc) made by CDProjekt and five made by the community. You can select each at New Game.

8/10 Glad I bought it!!!

Yeah, Yeah. I know. It is not as grand as The Witcher 3. Or even The Witcher 2.

But, since I own all 3 games, I wanted to start with number 1. And I am so glad I did.
The combat is rough around the edges, the controls a bit clunky. But the story and lore are amazing. And for as old as this game is, the visuals are very nice. Not "amazing" graphics, like TW 3, but for it's age, and keeping in mind what most games back then looked like, they did a damn good job with the look and feel of this game.

I don't know how to explain why I like this game so well. Perhaps because I am older, and I never got to play this game when it first came out. I like the quests, I like the story, I like the lore. And I will keep playing this game, because I do enjoy it so much, and it is so nostalgic for me. I really can't explain it. It just hit my heart and stuck there, in a good way.

But I do look forward to putting more time into TW 2 and then TW 3. And I feel this game is giving me a good education to prepare me for the next games in the series. Worth it, especially if you get it as part of an on- ale bundle with TW 2 and TW 3 like I did. Though I honestly can say I would be just as happy if I had paid full price.

Mileage may vary. Widely. But I really feel that if you are going to play either or both of the sequels, you really should start here and play this one too.

If you're into RPGs, you need to play the series.

This is where it started, as far as games are concerned and it shows. The controls are a little wonky, descriptions are difficult to understand at times and you'll spend a lot of time in the Wiki for clues. It's brutally difficult until about level 15 or so, then you start to feel a bit like a 'real' Witcher. Faster, more powerful than the humans around you; which is a good thing as you'll do a lot more fighting of them, than monsters as you navigate the boiling point of a race war between the Humans and essentially every other sentient race (Your typical fantasy groups: Dwarves, Elves, etc..).

For nearly a decade old, the game still looks good, and can still challenge modern hardware. With an i5, 16 GB of RAM, an SSD, and a GTX 970 in some sections at 1080p (Super sampled up to 4k) I'll drop below 45 FPS YMMV).

If you recently picked up The Witcher 3, I do recommend grabbing this one, and the second as well to get the whole story, though be warned. This one is kinda clunky, and meant solely for the PC. It's very mouse and keyboard heavy, and a lot of the actions are based on 'old school' die rolls. Did you dodge that attack, did you successfully parry, did your Sword hit its mark? Who the hell knows! The second one is closer to the 'modern' title (3) in that it is more easily played with a controller IMO, as you're met with QTE, and a lot of block, parry, dodge, attack segments.

What do you get for trying this one out first, and beating it?
- A lot of answers and lore.
- Better starting armor and weapons
- An imported save file that changes some of the world through your previous actions
- Knowledge about what the hell is going on in 2 and 3...

All in all, this game is worth it, even at its $10 price point ~10 years later. (I bought it twice: first on Disc, then here). Sit back, relax, and enjoy a good solid 40-50 hours of game play (~25 if you are really good, and rush past everything, and don't enjoy the world.

Random Info: This is essentially the European release of the game, not the censored US one, so the 'romance' cards DO contain nudity.

Pros:
-Intriguing plot
-Morally grey RPG
-Excellent voice acting
-Excellent music

Cons:
-Poorly designed combat system
-Plot pacing problems - chapter 2 is hell, chapter 4 is random
-Dated graphics
-Occasional questline glitches
-Plot ultimately self contained and skippable

Overall: This review is my first time playing any Witcher game. And I can honestly say, it's fun. It's dated and it has its rough edges, but it's fun. But play for the plot and the RPG choices, not the combat. And it's the first part of the Witcher series of games. I haven't read the books or played any of the other games, but this game has made me want to. Apparently they improve on almost everything.

That said, this game has a horribad combat system. It's just... the worst. Crafting is just relevant enough to be an irritating sidequest, and honestly, the gameplay just feels unpolished. That's a pretty severe criticism, and is a deal breaker for a lot of people.

If you can look past the gameplay issues, the story is amazing. Your choices revolve around one of three possible endings, and the plot has some great twists and turns to it. Ultimately, though, this game's plot is self contained and is only mildly referenced in the second Witcher, and not at all in the third. Thus, you can easily just look up a plot synopsis on this game and be good to go.

So really, it's a toss up. This is not the best RPG you'll ever play. You don't lose much by skipping it. But it's still a solid RPG. Decide for yourself.

Bottom Line: Fifty fifty. By itself, apart from all the rest of the series, it's worth playing. Grab it on a sale if you want to play through it for the experience.

Ill write short review, because no one likes long and boring ones

+ :
You start from the beggining of Geralt's story
Interesting characters
Equipment upgrading
Leveling system
Many types of enemies

- :
Combat is just awful. Whenever you get some debuff, Geralt just stays there for 10 seconds while everyone is pounding him with their bare ♥♥♥♥♥
Geralt cant move down small hill, he needs to run whole lap just to get lower
SOme quests require you to run around trying to find out what did you wrong or didnt do

Once you deal with this crap, this game is pretty good

The birthplace of the magnificent Witcher series starts here. Inspired by the novels of Andrzej Sapkowski, the world comes to life under the dedicated work of a much younger and unexperienced CD Projekt RED, but no less passionate. The limitations are evident, and the game suffers from them (particularly the combat), but if you can put that aside, get ready to embark on a dark fantasy world that will keep you invested in the story and its characters for hours.

It's almost emotional for me to witness the amazing progress of the studio behind this game. On an industry surrounded by greedy and dishonest publishers, CD Projekt RED stands out as an example of respect and dedication to gamers.
