This is a fantastic game, but I feel there a a couple of aspects which lets it down and stops it being a game of true excellence.

Story and delivery is great. Not huge depth in characters that you meet, but you get a chance to chose your own type of person you want to play, and notice the responses to the story he gives due to these. There seems to be so much in the ending that was dependant on the choices that I made that I really want to go for another playthrough to see if they were just clever in their delivery so it was belivable or somethign entirely different may happen. I like the lack of item management needed, for once in a RPG I wasnt half the time looking my inventory and swapping around items.
For the year it was released I think this must have been a great achivement to deliver a game like this which is a few years ahead of its time.

So bringing it down from the company of some of the greatest games ever: The combat is dull, clicking to perform one set of moves wasn't the most stimulating. Bugs; multiple crashes in playthrough, graphical glitches (hair and beards especially), some cutscenes I felt were played out of order (either that or where poorly placed in story so I had no idea what was going on/been teleported throught ime and space). Number one though is the maps you run around on, constantly back and forward to different parts (of fairly unambitious maps) unless you have to forsight to see the location os where every quest will take you to next to optimise your travelling, and always having to run the long way round to miss monsters/follow streets. They're gloomy places as well, not pretty enough for you to appreciate the trips.

Really enjoyed my time playing it. As I tend to rate of the games I play: this was a good use of my time.

It's amazing for an 2007 RPG game. 8/10
Baked with care in CD Projekt RED's oven for years, and still considered good to this day.
Literally, one of the few good RPG's that involve isometric view and click-to-kill mechanics that i enjoyed.
(I used OTS view, though.)

PROS:
The best thing about the game is that the combat system is not like;
-*click on enemy*
-*wait for an hour for him to die*
-*get 1shotted because you don't have enough defense skill*

*Very content heavy, will provide you hours of gameplay.

*The world around you is not just plastic, but it feels real, with many places to visit.

*Thanks to the dynamic combat system, you really have a blast while confronting many enemies.

CONS:

*Cutscenes (NOT CINEMATICS!) are pretty buggy, and the lipsync is not on point everytime.

*The optimization is not THAT good, but it's adequate. Hitman Absolution on High/Ultra settings
runs faster than this *game with Medium/High settings. I know, two games are very different but mind the 5 year gap.

*Loading scenes are not long, but there are a lot.

CONCLUSION

*Are you tired of the shovelware point-click garbage RPGs which try to market their game with ♥♥♥♥♥♥ anime graphics and edgy plots that you see in google ads and think they should be purged?

*Are you a fan of RPG-esque games, but can't find anything
nostalgic X [エステティック]?

*Do you want an RPG that is actually fun to play?

Should you grab this one out?
Hell yeah.

200 hours later.. and I'd do it all again. The Witcher had an amazing combat, potions, and alchemy system. I fear this was lost in the move to The Witcher 2, when the shift went to high-court intrigue, and less about being an actual witcher.. though TW2 IS a fantastic game.

I digress. The Witcher doesn't want to be easy. Played on the hardest settings, it requires you to watch for "tells" in combat to be effective. You must brew and use potions, and be properly equipped for any and all fights.

It then makes you decide how you want to shape your world. Are you going to side with the one group over the other? Or are you going to BE a witcher, and stay neutral?

200 Hours.. and memories that will last a lifetime.

monotounous.

How this game can be so bad when it was released in 2008 I have no idea, I honestly thought while I was playing that it was produced in 2003, morrowind is way way better then this game, even try deus ex or vampire bloodlines. This game has huge sprawing maps, no horse, so youre treavelling over boring land for most of the game with little purpose.

The game plays like a really boring MMO without the social aspect, I can easily forgive bad or below average graphics but the combat, shoddy quest guide and mobs of enimies without purpose make this game a good vision of what it could be but without either the funding or right types of staffing skills. I couldnt sit through this and punish myself playing this game as much as I wanted to get in on the background of the game.

For more traditional hack n slash RPGers, this game is heaven. The story and lively world make for a pleasant experience while the combat feels dated. For those of you who plays games for action and combat rather than story, try Witcher 2 and 3. For those of you who like story, this is well worth the money.

THERE.. IT'S DONE.. FINALLY...GOD!!

That being said, the game is worth every bang for it's buck if purely for the time that will be spend playing it.. I don't even remember when I bought it but has been alot of years playing on and off to finish it. I would spend several hours playing it and sometimes redoing sectiongs because I forgot to same the game :/.

It is a fun game which has a very good story to it and a whole world of lore surrounding it. The voice acting is great and the characters are great. The player can also determine the whitchers personality a bit with dialouge options. Your choices can sometimes effect wheather you have allies to help you in battles.

The gamplay is a bit akward I admit. It was probably trying to compensate for being a Diablo style clickfest by having you only click attack to connect combos together. I can understand why they moved away from that but apparently they changed it back In Whitcher 2.

It does have RPG elements that allow you to improve your character as you gain levels. Certain abilites aren't accessible until you get past the 10th level and even other until you get pace 20. There are also some abilites can can only be unlocked with mutagens that you can make after beating a boss. There wasn't really a clear way to see how upgrades wehre improving your characters ther wasn't exactly a character sheet to look at.

I really liked the potion making aspect of the game as it relied on you making the most of your eviroment to keep your character stocked with items. You could't really buy potions from stores and had to make it yourself. Reading books about herbalism help to expand your characters knowledges so they can use more types of plants and monsters guts. Just be careful how much and how often you use potions as high toxicity levels can slow or kill your character.

So, at some point I will play witcher 2 since I bought both of these games as a pack. Once PC is upgraded, whitcher 3. Should be fun.

I think the best word to describe The Witcher is "beautiful". But somethings in it may not be tolerable for some, like the combat and graphics. The NPC models are like 8 and are repeated A LOT except for some special main NPCs, voice acting is kinda bad and stuff. But the story is sooooooooooooooo great, so many plot twists and it gets better every chapter. I love this game! 9/10 !!! <3

The first game of The Witcher series. This game stands out because of its unique fighting system and its variety of monsters and enemies. You play as Geralt, a master witcher with amnesia. The things you do and choose will define your former self so choises will matter. For its time this game was the top. I fully reccomend it to any Witcher fans and RPG lovers because of its low price and tons of gameplay. RATING: 9/10

The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director's Cut
Developers CD Projekt Red | Release date 2008

One of my favorite RPG games. Solid RPG that features moral choices and great story line. Game keeps you in dark climate of fanatasy medieval. Witcher 1 is based on A. Sapkowski (polish writer) book called "Wiedźmin". Book shows story about Gerald the witcher monsters killer for hire. Book is based on Slavic mythology. In game is a lot of slavic mythology elements like monsters (demons) and rites. All of that is put in addictive sidequests. Combat system isn't well but is easy to learn.

You can chooose to have sex with every single girl in this universe and get nice cards. It feels like pokemon - collecting all the cards <3

A very compelling, if slighlty dated RPG. A great introduction to Geralt of Rivia, fantasy's most promiscuous hero. Slighly wonky voice acting and weird (yet kinda fun) rhythm based combat cant hold back what is ultimately an atmospheric, adult RPG.

Imo this is the absolute best Witcher game. The absolute best RPG I have ever played. Its a little dated sure, but it still very good. I had never heard of the Witcher until the 3 or so months before Witcher 3 was released, so I decided to play the avaiable ones to see if 3 would be worth it to purchase 3. In 2015 I was so impressed by this game that I think my expectations were a little too high for Witcher 3. All in all great game

A masterpiece. The game I spent most time on since AC II went out. All this for a price of 1,49Euro on sale.

Pros:
+ superb dialogue lines (with many popcultural, political, modern science references)
+ great characters
+ climatic locations
+ good story line
+ choices matter; a lot
+ brilliant music
+ ok graphics (2016)
+ mature content inserted naturally, as part of the world

Cons:
- some awkwardness in controls
- minor graphic glitches
- occassional crashes
- irritating inventory management

A must play.

This game really brings a lot of classic RPG elements into the gameplay and story. As you expect the The Witcher is based on a series of book written by the polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, so from the beginning the game already has a really large and well established lore to start with. The game puts you into the boots of Geralt of Rivia, a witcher that is trained since he was very young to become a badass monster slayer, but he is not doing it for free, you need to throw a couple of gold if you want your local atrocity to be dealt with. In terms of gameplay the game can be a little clunky but it's rewarding as well. Geralt is able to equip one of his two swords, more precisely the steel sword and the silver sword. The steel one is used for killing humans and the other one is for monsters. I still can't see how the silver one is not that effective against humans but I let that pass. Geralt will be able to explore a vast open world with interesting characters and I will warn you, that there is a lot of dark comedic tone in pretty much all the dialogue but somehow it manages to give The Witcher the personality it strived for. The UI is gonna be very strange at first but will get used to it and it will never break imersion when you shuffle through your inventory for potions and recipes. The music and sound is pretty good and matches the medieval fantasy air that the game brings, but the voice acting is kinda less to be desired. On the bad note The Witcher suffers from the disease called "♥♥♥♥yourquesttracking"-ilia. Is really easy to get all your quests managed when you can't find where the hell are you supposed to go or how many of "x" monster you have to kill to get "y" item so you can fetch it back to "z" NPC. Despite all those flaws The Witcher has been a really fun experience and I would recommend it only to people that enjoy a dark and mature story.

P.S. I don't like to give any games that I review any grades or marks or any other kind of number so I'll say that if you find yourself atracted to game you should try it first hand, before judging it from some popular reviewer POV.

Game On!

So, this is where it all started. Well, actually, it started in the books, but still. A nice journey into the trilogy before "The Wild Hunt" and even, on my second playthrough, I still enjoyed it.

Witcher 1 offers a detailed and interesting story with some funny dialogues, as well as marvelous maps with quite beautiful graphics for 2008. Such combination definitely provides a fascinating and involving medieval fantasy atmosphere to the players, which, I guess, is one of the main reasons people love the trilogy so much. The other, probably, is sex. Witcher 1 stands out from the other parts with special romance cards thay you get for sexual encounters... and Triss Merigold is as charming as ever.

I appreciate that the developers bring dark and mature themes to the game and that they weren't concerned about political correctness. There are number of things, for which feminists would call the developers sexists. But, since I'm not a feminist, kudos for CD Projekt Red, because I prefer my games uncensored.

With that said, there are number of things, that make the gameplay less pleasant, namely:

1) Frequent crashes, freezing and black screens (I played it on Windows 10)
2) Despite the cool combos, the combat system is dull and gets boring soon. Fighting is not about the skill, as much as it is about damage stats and choosing the right stance and weapon
3) There are too many monsters around and they respawn too often. It doesn't make the game more difficult, just artificially longer, as you need time to deal with them. You can run pass them, but still.
4) Inventory is too small. There is a mod for that, but it doesn't provide more slots, it just allows to stack more items of the same type
5) The game offers choices that have consequences, leading to alternative scenarios, but none of those consequences are sufficiently serious as it was in Mass Effect. Almost nothing you did has any relevant effect in Witcher 2.

Also:

6) The "mature" element of this game is mostly sex, profanity and morally grey choices, which all is fine by me, but I wish the story was more sophisticated. Come to think of it, the main storyline is actually quite robust and behind those primitive fetch quests there aren't that many side quests that stand out.

But even with those faults Witcher is one of my favourite games. I had great fun playing it and with the extra content (a digital comic and fan made adventure modules) I had some more. "Witchmas" adventure is very funny! "Price of Neutrality" and "Side Effects" were nice, too. The other modules were interesting, but they have some gamebreaking bugs.

The game has plenty of mods and a game editor to create your own modules, so that's another good thing about it.

My overall rating 8/10.
