Buy Train Simulator: SP&S E-1 Class 'Northern' Loco Add-On

About This Content

This DLC is only available to purchase in the USA.

The SP&S E-1 Class ‘Northerns’ add a touch of nostalgia to Train Simulator – jump in the cab and recreate that 1930s West Coast flavour.

After many years of operating second-hand locomotives, the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway (SP&S) was granted permission by its parent companies, the Great Northern Railway and Northern Pacific Railway, to acquire its first new locomotives. In 1938, the SP&S took delivery of three Baldwin Locomotive Works 4-8-4 locomotives, numbered 700, 701 and 702. These locomotives, designated as E-1 Class ‘ Northerns’, were identical in design to the Northern Pacific A-3, except that they burned oil instead of coal.

The ‘Northerns’ operated at a tractive effort of 69,800 lbf (310.49kN) and included a Walschaerts valve gear, piston valves and two cylinders. On entering service, they operated the SP&S’ premier passenger services, including the Empire Builder, although by the late 1940s had been moved to secondary passenger services due to the introduction of diesel locomotives and by the mid-1950s were relegated to freight services.

By Summer 1956, all three ‘Northerns’ had been retired from service, with No. 700 pulling its last passenger train from Portland, Oregon to Wishram, Washington on 20th May 1956. This locomotive is the only one of the three ‘Northerns’ to have been preserved and can be viewed at the Oregon Rail Heritage Center.

The E-1 Class ‘Northerns’ from Train Simulator, developed by G-Trax Simulations, is available in SP&S livery with two running numbers, No. 700 and No. 701.

The locomotive is Quick Drive compatible, giving you the freedom to drive the SP&S E-1 Class ‘Northerns’ on any Quick Drive enabled route for Train Simulator, such as those available through Steam.

This is an amazing engine to have! The sounds are realistic but the only problem I have with it is theres only two road numbers but that dosnt stop me from giving it a thumbs up!

This loco cannot do much, its difficult to get it to any speed above 35 or 40 with or without a consist. I've been driving this for 6 months on TS2016 + 5 on TS 2015 before having a PC replacement. But come on! It's so week! It's details are Ok, love the cab and all as well as most of the sounds. But this is an express passenger loco designed to work on the Great Northern Empire Bulilder on a 1.5% gradient. It should have the ability of not worrying about PSI dropping to much if you keep the fire/water levels right and watch the position of your reverser and regulator. It should hit at least 70 with out worrying its top speed is 100 or 110 MPH. Also look at the tractive effort. 69,000 Ibs that should make it a little stronger than the FEF with about 63,800 Ibs. I would say send this to Smokebox for an overhaul, also I would reccomend getting something else instead. The FEF and AT&N Consolidation are much more realistic and worth the money.

Being that I'm from the Pacific Northwest, I kind of wanted something to mimic the steamers of the area. This addon is a bit dated, so I can't say I totally recommend it. Only for diehard steamer fans. Not terribly complex, and still fun, but not up to the quality of many other addons available right now. Graphically, a bit poor, especially the interior.

I'll admit I'm not the best steam driver, but I simply cannot get this thing to ♥♥♥♥♥♥ter than 30 mph when I have a consis behind it. It's not even a big consis, it's only like 7 cars. The engine looks great and sounds great. It is a good representation of what American steam was, but it won't pull anything. It bugs me so much. Also I personally would've wanted something specifically for this locomotive like SP&S passenger or frieght cars to make a nice train on Maria's Pass, but unfortunately there are no such cars. Buy this engine if you want a steam engine, but I don't recommend it. Not much pull, no scenarios, no rolling stock, no point.
