About This Content

The Great Western Main Line from Oxford to Paddington is a bustling thoroughfare, taking passengers and freight from the west of England into London, and you can drive your own high speed services and freight trains along this busy route in Train Simulator.

The line originally opened way back in the 1830s as part of Brunel’s fantastic Great Western Railway, which was designed to have as few challenging gradients as possible to benefit running speed. Today, the line is one of Britain’s busiest, carrying thousands of commuters every day and handling large amounts of freight. The Oxford-Paddington line in Train Simulator runs from London Paddington to Oxford Station via Reading and includes a variety of modern passenger and freight trains to drive, as well as some challenging scenarios to put your driving skills to the test.

Scenarios:

8 scenarios:

  • Autumn Leaves
  • Chasing Yellows
  • Lost in the Shuffle
  • Oxford to Reading Local
  • Return Ticket
  • Rush Hour Run
  • Duff Coal
  • Oxford Bound

Key Features

  • Oxford-Paddington Great Western Main Line including Didcot Parkway, Reading and Old Oak Common
  • Class 43 High Speed Train (HST) in First Great Western livery (two versions)
  • Class 166 DMU in First Great Western livery (two versions) and Network Southeast livery
  • Class 47 in BR Railfreight, BR Blue and Rail Express liveries

Please note: if you have already purchased RailWorks or Train Simulator 2012, you already have this route and its contents.

Not the full thing, if you want the part that goes to exeter and onwards, you have to buy it as two extensions, there is a bristol to exeter, and a riviera line add on to paignton from exeter, if you buy this seperately, you get a little range of locos and DMU's but if you want the 150, 153, 156, 158 & 159 you buy those seperately too, also if you buy this seperately you can only get up to didcot (on the way to exeter) and only can get up to oxford (on the way to manchester etc) but the full thing, just goes on and on. If I owned DTG, I would release the full thing together and the price would be higher and would include all locos, dmu's and emu's including the heathrow connect and express units and the 333 (if someone ever made one)

This route is no longer set in the modern day. It's 10 years old, however, I'm not going to let that get in the way of the review. That would be like saying WLoS is bad because there's no OHLE at Carlisle... anyway...

This was one of the original route from Rail Simulator and it shows that effort has gone a long way since. I'll be honest, it does not look that great. The assets are too bright and rather generic (eg the same light wood-coloured brick wall everywhere or that same metal bridge). The platforms are also basic and sometimes don't alaign with the tracks. The original "Kuju" tracks look awful on any route.

There's also just a vast lack of detail for the whole route. There's no 3rd or 4th electric rails where needed, no OHLE is some part and it's missing Airport Junction.

I don't drive on this route any longer. There's a newer, better one out called "Western Mainlines" by Just Trains bit that is not the reason I do not drive on it. The reason is that I can't actually take is seriously anymore. It lacks to much detail to be immersive and realistic and it is really not worth my time. Back in it's day, it was a somewhat good route but back then, we didn't know any better.

It is a very good route to drive on. It has great scenary and great engines with rolling stock in very well done liveries body designs. As I live close to this line in real life, it's very realistic. However, I was disappointed to find out that it doesn't go further than Oxford or Didcot. As I live in the Swindon area, as was disappointed to discover that Swindon hasn't been included. Apart from that, it's very well done.

This is the best route EVER! It gives you so much high detailed track with incredibly good trains and highly detailed stations. If you like freight, high speed or slow trains this is the add on for you. And all this for £5.99 and if there is a sale then for just £2.39. The only thing that i dont like about it is that the class 166 has a weak brake and slow start and that the route doesnt have enough electric tracks so i cant use my high speed trains on it. Otherwise I give it 10/10

This DLC seems outdated and in need of an update. There's only 2 career tasks, one is not well explained, one can't be completed on time. Cheap perhaps but didn't have any fun with it. Not recommended.

The description does not warn you that you need specific train DLC to access most of these scenarios. I can only play 2 out of 8 promised in the description, having bought the basic Train Simulator 2015 package.

Wow this is some good quality DLC and for a very good price (£5.99). Cant fault it and I wish all the DLC was like this. For the price of a sandwich and a drink you can get hours of entertainment from the route and its locos. Simliar DLC can set you back 30 quid.

This route is a fantastic route.
It's incredibly detailed andvery worth the £9.99 if you canget it on the sale then great!
It's a fantastic route with beautiful locos, realistic sounds beautiful scenery one of the best routes Dovetail Games has actually ever made so all in all if you are starting your collection or expanding it then this route is a perfect buy!
I would certainly reccomend it especially for the £2.99 price on the slae at the moment!
Love it i would give it 5* out of 5
p.s this route is not that graphically demanding so it won't put your pc under too much strain which isareleif unlike some of the newer routes.:)

So excited to see a train I actually go on, rather than the American rubbish found in Trainz. Get it on sale to save even more on an already cheap route.

This is an older route but it looks great, excellent rame rates and wonderful scenery, and there are many scenarios on the Workshop for it. Definelty a great buy, especially considering the price.

The GWML is old and outdated but makes up for it with the scenery it has and the rolling stock that comes with it. The 166 and 43 admittedly could do with some work but they are good base models. The 47 is also good. Overall 9/10
