About This Content

The F40PH California Zephyr brings together one of the most famous names and one of the most recognisable shapes in US railroading for Train Simulator!

Built by the General Motors Electro-Motive Division from 1975 into the early 1990s, the F40PH was built specifically for Amtrak to haul short passenger services. However, it soon proved its versatility and before long the F40PH was hauling long-distance passenger trains such as the famous California Zephyr. Other operators also ordered a number of these locos, including Via Rail Canada, GO Transit and NJ Transit. With a 3,000 horsepower diesel engine, the F40PH had a top speed of just over 100mph and though most of Amtrak’s units have been retired, they have continued in service with other owners across North America including CSX, Metra and MBTA. The California Zephyr has been a legendary name for railroad fans since it first ran in 1949. Running from Chicago, Illinois to Emeryville, California and passing through 7 states, the current Amtrak California Zephyr first ran in 1983 and still rolls along its scenic 2,400-mile route every day.

The F40PH for Train Simulator recreates the Amtrak Phase III colour scheme and includes Amtrak Super-Liner Phase II and Phase III passenger cars including coach, diner and sleeper, and baggage cars. Drive the included scenarios for the Donner Pass (also available on Steam) or select Quick Drive and drive the F40PH wherever you want.

Includes

F40PH diesel locomotive in Amtrak Phase III livery, with detailed controls and cab including instrument lighting

Amtrak passenger cars: Phase II and Phase III versions of the Baggage car, Coach, Lounge Café Car, Sightseer Lounge car, Sleeper car and Transition Sleeper car.

5 scenarios for the Donner Pass route, also available on Steam

Love it! But, just like everything else this game has to provide, it is WAY overpriced! When I bought this DLC, I spent 40 bucks! And I'm not even able to use it untill I get Donner Pass which is another 40 which adds up to about 60-80 bucks in the end! That's like purchasing 3-4 brand new games! I really enjoy it including the cab forward, but are they really worth that much money? If you think so, get Donner Pass first. It comes with several engines and scenarios so that you can actually enjoy it. I made the mistake of getting this before, and I wasn't able to even use it yet. Only get these if you are actually going to use them. Otherwise, save your money and get somthing worth spending it on.

first the F40PH is my favourite engine
second it just looks super accurate
now here comes the bad part
the headlights look really bad in TS2015 and they dont emit the forward view that headlights normally do
other than that it is totally worth 19.99
what would also be nice, is if they added Amtrak phase iii express freight boxcars

Pros:
- Passenger train for Donner Pass with 4 enjoyable scenarios
- Using the Reno-Truckee section which is not covered by Donner's own scenarios (only free roam / quick drive)
- Nice in-cab engine sounds (real or not), including:
-- Lovely transition between the notches
-- Much less noticeable flanger effect while double-heading, if any at all (compared to the GP9, SD40)
- Passenger view in all cars

Neutral:
- Soldier Summit has the same loco with 2 scenarios coming with the route (driving this on Donner Pass gives a Soldier Summit achievement)
- The headlights are not intuitive; HUD position #2 emits a light forward, not visible outside the cab

Cons:
- The coaches slow down rapidly without applying power
- Rapid acceleration already in notch 1 (as a light engine), probably to counter the previous point
- Rapid dynamic braking already in notch 1, downhill scenarios require holding it at 2-4%
- Notch 0 (idle) and 1 have the same sound, but different RPM
- 3rd scenarios is too tight, requires track speed +0.4 on average, cannot use notches, must hold the throttle all the time, otherwise it fails
- Career doesn't count towards Coast to Coast, not sure about Standard
- Passenger view sounds are not too good in some cars and missing (silence) in the rest

Overall: worth getting if you like Donner Pass and want some diversity.

This is an awesome DLC. The cab is awesome. The Superliners are awesome. The only thing that is not awesome, is the horn/bell. I admit that the train horn is good and sounds good, but the horn sounds the same in the passenger cars and loco cab as it does outside of the engine.Same thing with the bell. Overall, this is a good use of your money.
