About This Content

The Hunslet J94 ‘Austerity’ tank locomotive is now available for Train Simulator, complete with the Maerdy Valley colliery mini-route and advanced steam simulation features.

The J94 was introduced in 1937 as the Hunslet Class 50550, general purpose 0-6-0 saddle tank locomotive. At the outbreak of World War 2, the design was amended to allow cheaper and speedier production, and the Hunslet Austerity tank was born. Several works were charged with producing the J94 including Hunslet, Andrew Barclay Sons & Co, W.G Bagnall, Hudswell and Clarke, Robert Stephenson's and Hawthorns and the Vulcan Foundry. Incredibly, the J94 continued in production for the National Coal Board almost until the end of British main line steam, with the last being produced for the NCB in 1964. The J94’s versatility and appeal for yard operators assured the type a continuing life late into the 20th Century with the NCB and with numerous industrial owners.

The J94 for Train Simulator includes 8 different loco variants, including weathered liveries, and two different control options: a standard version which can be driven with the on-screen HUD or simple controls, plus an advanced version with accurately simulated steam controls which requires keyboard control. Also included is a small colliery route running between Maerdy and Tylorstown.

Brilliant locomotives, really love this DLC. But at least some of the buffer stops just don't work. I derailed my train because of it. That broke the immersion and ended the session. Sloppy job.

The brake gauge on the hud is no longer working. Unless it is fixed, I can't recommend this otherwise fine addon.

I like the route. It has a lot of atmosphere. I just wish it was quick-drive compatable. I know the locos are, but to be able to take any locomotive on the route would be nice. Also, stay away from the Advanced Mode locos. To change the reverser, you have to press "e" to take off the reverser lock (which is fine), but to change the setting you have to close the throttle, which is unrealistic and makes you lose speed. And when you are climbing to Maerdy Collery with a train, you will need every bit of speed you can get.
The locomotives are nice, well modeled, and run great. the yellow one that only has locomotive brakes has a very nice look to it. It LOOKS like a locomotive that has spent its life working a coal mine or other industrial area. it has that worn down look, but it also has the air of pride that any steamer does.
one thing that disappoints me is the lack of steam effects. There are no particle effects for the injectors, whistle, or cylinder co cks.

A fantastic little add-on that's well worth buying in any sale - if only all DLC was like this.

It's a little saddle tank with semi-realist controls, nice sound fx, comes with it's own stock and branch line and is quick drive compatible.

With a max speed around 45 mph you won't want to take it far but put it on any rural branch line with half a dozen wagons and a brake van and you have an instant "Ivor the engine" or "Thomas" scenario.

As it's an old DLC the RouteInformation thumbnail "Maerdy.png" is wrongly named for TS2015, so missing from Scenario descriptions, etc. but other than that it seems compatible with TS2015 and would recomend it.

Note: the thumbnail can be fixed by copying/renaming "Maerdy.png" to "image.png" but DTG need to fix issues like this for quite a few routes.
