About This Content

Sherman Hill is a fantastic North American freight route, and now you can be the engineer on your own trains on this great railroad line in Train Simulator.

Running 60 miles between Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyoming, the route is well-known for the tough grades which resulted in the Union Pacific Railroad building new heavy freight locomotives to work the line. The first single track railroad was laid in 1868, passing over the summit at 8,247 feet, and the route was steadily upgraded with double tracks and stronger bridges in the following decades.

The Sherman Hill route for Train Simulator features a superb fleet of Union Pacific diesel locomotives including the SD70M, SD40-2, ES44C and SW10, plus some seriously long freight trains for you to haul over the grades. Six scenarios will help you explore this great railroad line, and drivers also have the option of taking Track #3 to Laramie.

Long Driving. Required on alot of Workshop things and 3rd party. The route is fun to drive in with the SD70M And ES44DC. No Bugs or lag issues for me. Its great.

This route is rather fast, and part of the first transcontinental railway. Its pretty detailed, but the throttle on the EMD SD70M doesn't work, witch is a major bummer, the SD70 is one of my favorite engines. I like the new horns on the EMD SD40-2 and the GE ES44AC. Also comes with a SW10 switcher that's pretty descent.

Pros: -New Horns.
-Very fast and detailed.
-Part of the first Transcon, and is easily able to be 2015, or 1950 and every time in between.
-Updated Sounds. Awsome.
-Inproved Big Boy 4-8-8-4.

Cons: -The double-stack cars aren't realistic
-Some of the rocks are a little sketchy
-Really boring for people with either no attention span, or aren't used to American trains.

Over all its a good rout for fans of the Union Pacific Railway. If there was a voting system, I would give it 7.5/10

This route is my favorite Union Pacific route for TS. Running at about 60 miles from Cheyenne to Laramie in Wyoming, the route offer plenty of heavy freight hauling up the grades. An alternate route(via Track #3) runs an additional 9 miles between the two cities with lighter grades. Starting at Cheyenne, you've got a huge yard with sidings, oil refinery and maintenance shops. Heaidng out of Cheyenne Tracks 1, 2, and 3 run side by side a short distance unti Wycon, where a fertilizer plant is situated. Heading up further Tracks 1 and 2 are linked back to #3 via Borie-Cut-off. After that the #3 is isolated from 1 and 2 until Dale. En-route to Dale, challeging grades lie ahead wih the summit of Sherman Hill, the highest area on the Transcontinental RR then it is downhill. Ate Dale Track #3 rejoins 1 and 2 then a short distance ahead #3 diverges back out heading to Laramie via Red Buttes. After Hermosa it is all smooth running through the scenery until Laramie, where another yard is located and a cement plant just outside town on Track #3. Included is 4 engines, a ES44AC, SD70M, SD40-2 and SW10 Switcher #96. Lots of rolling stock in it as well. I recommend this fantastic route!

Yeah, okay, I know what you're thinking: The grasslands of Wyoming? If you're gonna call out Donner Pass for being repetitive and boring, surely you'll hate this one too! Except I don't. Let's check it out.
-Sherman hill is actually NOT boring. Admittedly a good chunk of the reasoning behind that is because you're constantly going at around 40-60, so you're not staring at the same patch of hill forever. PLUS, you can cover the whole route in about an hour. If a route is too long, it can get very tedious, but Sherman Hill is honestly just the right length.
-Sherman Hill is also a relatively easy way to get into long-haul freight. Its relatively short distance, along with more or less constant grades makes it really good for beginners.
-Locomotive variety is good. The ES44AC and SD70M are really the only two trains that run along this route, so their inclusion is somewhat required. Plus these two locos are seen all over the country.
-Sounds stupid to compliment, but the skybox is REALLY good on this route. When you play it, you'll know what i mean.
-Scenery is really nice. It does feel varied enough for the location, anyways. This is the only route that I've actually seen with my own eyes, and the feel is SPOT on.
-Inclusion of Track 3.
-Huge presence on the workshop
-Lastly, Laramie and Cheyenne's historic railroad depots are included. While no passenger services go along this route anymore (The last Amtrak service over Sherman Hill was in 1997), the Cheyenne Frontier days train from Denver (pulled by either FEF-3 844 or an F7) does stop at Cheyenne, and historical Pioneer and Overland services could also traverse the hill.
-There are some rocks and grass that are not placed properly and do appear to float. None are terribly close to the track, but it is enough to be noticeable.
-Yeah, okay, the fact that its pretty much a straight forward run with no yards or anything between Laramie and Cheyenne does kinda suck, but hey, its only a 60 mile route, what were you expecting?

I think this route kinda gets a bad rap just bc it looks like a 'desert', but it really isn't. The speed and length of the route means its really just enough to not get boring. If you want to ease into mountain railroading, you could do a whole lot worse than Sherman Hill. With excellent scenery, wonderful locomotives that you can use on a whole variety of other routes, and a portion of one of the most traversed freight mainlines in the US, I would certainly recommend this route to anyone just getting into North American freight, fans of UP, or anyone in-between!

Loads of rolling stock available with this route about 12 different types of wagons, plus 3 types of big locomotives and a SW10 Switcher, PLUS the route, definately worth getting.

This route came bundled with TS2013 so I got it by defult, I would not have picked it out of choice .... I did have a go at driving it once but I nodded off after about 20 minutes and didnt bother with it again.

I cannot condemn a route just because i find it boring, its personal choice not a failing of the DLC, Clearly lots of people like routes like this.

If you like driving long freight trains slowly through endless desert then this DLC may be for you.

This is a nice route. I recommend it for UP lovers. The ES44AC is very improved. And the SD40-2 has a better horn. So does the ES44AC. It has realistic weather effects. It also has more than one route for each train. I think its going to be in my Top 3 routes at #1. Its the best route ive ever had.

A fantastic run for your steam locos, especially ones like the FEF-3, Big Boy and Challenger. Some great open expanses to see if you can really put the speed down, and the incline can be a bit of a challenge at times. Enjoyable.

Useless f**king route! i thought id go ahead and purchase this route to get some north american flavor, big mistake. while the route itself is stunning, the controls are horrendous. im a conductor in real life and i can tell you whoever programmed this s**tstorm of a download needs to be fired. theres something very wrong with all brakes. the loco (independent) brakes seem to have no effect whether you're engine light or with a train. the train (automatic) brakes always seem to be stuck on "17%" whatever that means, and they only relase when they feel like it. there doesnt seem to be any way to recover from emergency either, except wait it out and the computer will decide your fate for you. the SW engine also seems to have a feature on its train brake that seems like it gives you the opportunity to acuate as well. for those railfans out there that may not know what that means it is a feature ONLY ON A LOCO (independent) brake that allows the engine brakes to release while the train brakes remain applied. why this is on the train brakes i have no idea.

also whenever you go thru a turnout (mainline switch) there is no speed limit in the view screen at the bottom, so be prepared to memorize all speeds thru all turnouts. and as stated above, be prepared to apply your train brakes thru said switch and have NO EFFECT other than the stupid game yelling at you while you watch those negative points accumulate.

the route itself is pretty scenic, but as for this TRAIN SIMULATOR, very little is actually simulated... Don't buy unless you like being made into a fool by whoever programmed this s**t route

Nice, atmospheric add-on for sure. If you buy it in the TS2016 edition, or otherwise get the Gas Turbine, you get 15 extra scenarios.

However, there are quite frequent issues with the scenarios, cars and locos included with this pack (there is a thread or two every week on the forums). Trains get separated, the brakes get stuck, timings are off, switches set wrong or just an emergency penalty while rolling with released brakes. It's really hard to enjoy the otherwise cool six-pack of scenarios when it is so shaken and full of bugs.

If you decide to play this - save often.

This is a go-to route for those of you who love busy mainline American routes. The many great things about this route is not only the route itself, but also the rolling stock that comes with it.

This route comes with four locomotives: A Union Pacific ES44AC, SD70M, SD40-2 and SW10 switcher. This route also comes with a good amount of UP-Branded rolling stock. While the area the route is set in is relatively flat, and could be boring to some people, Union Pacific now owns routes like Donner Pass, Soldier Summit, etc. and their equipment can be used on those routes for scenario creation.

As for the route itself, it's a fairly good route for those of you who like faster, mainline American routes. The route stretches from Cheyenne to Laramie, Wyoming. The route also includes "Track 3" which is a track that branches off from the mainline and takes a route with a smaller grade, and is easier to get over with long trains.

There are a couple of industries along the line for the railroad to serve. Besides some small ones in Cheyenne and Laramie, there is Dyno Nobel Inc. which is an industrial equipment supplier. Another is the open-pit mine at Granite, Wyoming. Another major one is the Mountain Cement Company which (you guessed it) produces cement.

A little something special with this route is the BNSF stub in Cheyenne. There exists part of the old C&S line in Cheyenne, which today is now owned by BNSF, and sometimes BNSF comes onto the UP mainline. If you have BNSF content, this could be a plus for you scenario creators!

PS: After the TS2016 update, all the rail cars that come with this route have newer, realistic sounds when a train pulls them. When in motion, the cars sound life-like as they pass by.

Overall, I definately recommend this route for both its rolling stock, and for the route itself!

I feel that i like this route more than any of the other routes i have in my collection.

I would agree with Jesus review.

The only complaint i have is the Single route edition which from the sound of the discription is pretty much just buying the normal Sherman Hill route which is strange that it is also cheaper but you aslo get the Union Pacific 8500HP Gas Turbine Electric Locomotive with it which makes no sense to me.

Which is why it doesn't make sense to me.
Why make the same route twice with maybe a few changes plus a new locomotive?

It's not like it's the first time the developers have made a few changes to content and inclueded it in the next update.

Sure i don't have the Single Route Edition and don't know what all it has to make it different from the one i got but why waste your money on a copy if all your going to get out of it is a few scenarios and a locomotive?

Train Simulator 2016: Sherman Hill (Single Route Edition) $22.99 A copy with unknown changes or could be exactly the same except new scenarios for the extra locomotive that was added for a lower price $17.00 price difference

Pretty much the Amtrak® F40PH ‘California Zephyr’ DLC and Epic Journys Soldier Summit Route DLC all over again.

Mostly a negative review however just pointing something out that shouldn't have happened in the first place.

It's still a good route regaurdless.
