[1.1.42] - Release Notes

RELEASE NOTES [1.1.42]

Hello,

The new patch for Endless Space should be available by any time now, but here's a little explanation on our changes, in addition to the release notes.

CHANGES ON THE HARMONY & VAULTERS

The Harmony
Changes done in order to resolve their issue of starting systems way slower than the other races and thus making them more competitive we added a new ability.

Harmony now gets a 2 FIS bonus on their system for each orbiting ship up to 2x the CP max. It helps them to compensate the buyout and to profit from the lack on upkeep of their fleet by either cheap ship in early to accelerate the development or later defensive fleet to keep a considerable bonus with the end game CP limit.

The Vaulters
In first place, Vaulters were immune against disapproval but it was not fun enough. So we added a little gameplay twist; now only system with Portals are not counted for the expansion disapproval and the counter part is that the expansion disapproval is 3 times stronger for a Vaulter.

Still too easy huh? Well, to reinforce the defensive aspect of the Vaulter, the Portal can now only be built on a system with 100% ownership.

In addition to that, we modified their unique improvement: now, only one is needed in the Empire and it will produce 1% of Science on Empire per Portal. The counterpart is, the construction of the building reduces by 66% the Science on all systems.

Have fun! We’re looking forward to reading your feedback on those changes.

This galaxy is ancient, and its first intelligent life was the civilization we call the Endless. Long before our eyes gazed upon the stars they flew between them, though all that remains of this people is what we call Dust. A substance found scattered or in forgotten temples, it once gave powers to admirals and galactic governors. The galaxy will belong to the faction that can take control of the Dust and uncover its secrets…

  • A Born Leader: Guide one of eight civilizations as you strive for galactic dominion. Will you control the entire galaxy through subtle trade and diplomacy, explore every corner of the universe to find powerful artifacts and resources, overwhelm other civilizations with your advanced technologies, or destroy your enemies with massive armadas?

  • Endless Discoveries: With hundreds of star systems to explore, different planet types, luxuries and strategic resources to exploit, the mysteries within the Dust to master and a host of strange scientific phenomena to deal with, the player will have no lack of challenges. Hire heroes to become fleet admirals or system governors and discover five hero classes and their unique ability trees and specializations.

  • Space Opera: Experience Endless Space with state-of-the-art graphics and interface, switch between strategic battle decisions and long-term planning. Optimize each fleet for epic battles around contested stars. Create the perfect combinations from dozens of unique ships per civilization. Customize your ship with modules, armament, engines and special mods. The player has a plethora of choices of how to best destroy or dissuade his enemy.

  • Take on the Universe: Play against up to seven opponents and build up – or break – alliances at will. Discover an innovative and dynamic simultaneous turn-based gameplay. Permit instant jump-in for your ongoing online games. Define your own custom civilizations and confront the ones created by your friends.

  • Endless Replayability: Control every new game’s scope, from a quick match-up to an endless war. Generate an infinity of random galaxies where every start begins a new adventure. Modify the size, shape, density, age and a lot more to create your ideal galaxy. Choose from different victory conditions and adapt your strategy on the fly.

  • Creating GAMES2GETHER: Track the dev team’s objectives, progress and achievements. Participate in the creation of the game via the GAMES2GETHER initiative. Access early versions of the game and give your feedback to the dev team. Discuss actual and future game features and expansions with the dev team.

This was my first indie game purchased. As a fan of 4x strategy games they all look good to me but few live up to my standard. This game has so much potential for and indie game and I really do look forward to an endless space 2 hopefully someday. The complexity of it almost mind blowing. The space battles between ships go 3D instead of the normal 4x game battles like the the most popular of all times Sid Miers Civilization. The background story of the Endless Space Universe is fantastic. The play between the factions is a little lackluster. And the game leaves you wanting more of an in depth feel on the solar systems and planets. But it is an Indie game and once you play you will see a few game play enhancements would be nice. But the Universe is so expansive the technology tree is enormous. The tech tree is broke down into four sections military, science, exploration, and economics. If you research into exploration you might be able to build on any planet but it doesn't do you an good if you can't defend yourself. If you go all science doesn't help if you can build the greatest advancements if you can't afford them because economy is weak. That’s why I love 4x games and the seven ways to win expansion, scientific, economic, diplomatic, supremacy, and wonder . And I all most forgot about the ship builder I’ve lost myself for hours just building your very own customized ship. The disharmony DLC added some nice features and I look forward to more DLC's. I could go forever on why you should buy this game. I give this game my highest recommendation the Nifty stamp of approval.

This game is like an attractive girl with some very bad habits and/or attitudes. I tried to love this game, I tried to overlook the bugs, but I can't, they are too obvious. It is a good game, but sometimes, I cannot tell if some of the stuff they have are supposed to be features or bugs. For example, enemies can move during MY turn. If I wanted my enemies to move at the same time as me, I would go back to Sins of a Solar Empire.

Bugs
Another frustrating thing is that my main fleet was trapped in a star system for X amount of turns because the AI, for whatever reason, decided to send 10 individual ships to that same system and set them on blockade mode. I can only kill 1 at a time so the chances of that fleet leaving on its own was close to zero, unless I mount a rescue.

Diplomacy
The diplomacy is broken beyond believe. AIs often offer star systems and resources as part of their Cease Fire agreements. However, these agreements would be undone next turn, because the systems they surrendered contain the same resources in the agreement, so they have no more resources to pay me. Another thing that is annoying is that I do not understand why "create alliance", "cease fire" and such needed to be researched. When someone is beating your @$$, you would instinctively yell 'stop', not to these advance space beings apparently.

Tutorial
The tutorial is inadequate at best. After going through the whole tutorial, I still don't grasp the important points of the game such as battles and ship designs until I googled them. I figured the rest out because of my past experience with Alpha Centauri and Civ.

AI
The AIs are dumb and overly aggressive. By 20-30 turns, my closest neighbour declared war on me for absolutely no reason at all. At least in AC or Civ, they would give you some sort of warning, but not Endless Space! It will f--k you when it feels like f--king you up, regardless of their capabilities. And they refuse to make peace when they just lost all their ships. Based on my reading on multiplayers, it seems that it is buggy as hell online as well. So this game doesn't have much going for it, since you can't play with the AIs and you can't play with other people.

Difficulty
In Civ V, they have a nice range of difficulties, ranging from settler to deity (8 levels). In ES, they have something similar too. However, the problem is that the gaps between each is as wide as the Grand Canyon. Say, ES's normal is like Civ's Chieftain or Warlord, its hard mode is like Deity. So either the game is too easy for you to learn from, or it is so hard that you just can't survive past the 100th turn. I was either bored or frustrated.

Research
Regardless of your fraction, you almost always research the same techs every time. Colonize planets, Enhances weapons, Make ships bigger, Enhances more weapons, Make ships even bigger, with the occasional resource unlocking, incoming increasing, happiness inducing tech here and there.

Victory Warning
While I appreciate the game for telling me that the AIs are winning, it doesn't need to start reminding me when they are only 10-20% complete toward certain victories. A even more ridiculous example is when I am at 60% completion, they warn me of this AI who is close to winning the game at 20%. Very helpful indeed.

Conclusion
I paid around $15 in Nov of 2013 for both Endless Space and Disharmony. I want my money back and I am trying to save yours here. This game is great in the sense that it is like Alpha Centauri but on a galactic scale. It's like Civ 5 with levelable heroes. The management/production system is nice. But everything else is not. The concept is great but it is very poorly executed or maintained (based on my investigation, a lot of bugs seemed to stem from Disharmony).

I have uninstalled this game after close to 100hours of play and it will take a major cleansing for me to reinstall it and give it another go. This game as it stands is worth $5 at best, anymore, you are getting ripped off. Spend your money elsewhere. Thanks for reading.

Update/Sales
Jun.25, 2014 - currently at $7.49USD (75% off). Best discount I have seen since I bought the game. If this game interests you and you don't mind the bugs/features, then GO FOR IT quick. It is a good price.

Overall info

Enjoyable and fun game experience. Can be a little frustrating at the beginning but once you get into it will consume you. Lore of the game is really interesting , races are well designed and unique. AI isn't that great, even if its you best friend he will probably attack you becouse 1) you have a higher score than him 2) he has no room to expand. So yeah diplomatic is kinda hard in this game, one of the most difficult victories to achieve.

There is also a supremacy ( aka conquest homeworlds ) , expansion ( own 3/4 of galaxy ) and wonder victory.

So I suggest cooping with a friend becouse its always more fun. Games lenght depends on your map settings, they can last few hours or even days. There is lots of customization when it comes to the galaxy settings, like shape , size , ammount of planets and their size, events etc.

Races are also great. There is a race that devours worlds so they need to expand if they want keep their strenghts up, pacifist robots , religious robots , various humans sub-factions, et's , some kind of samurai aliens and finally my fav race Harmony.
Race made of living crystal that wants to purge galaxy of dust ( aka gold, game income ).
There is also an option to modify current races and select different traits for them, its a fully customizable.

Soundtrack is amazing, really enjoyable to listen.

Flaws
~~What are the minuses ?
AI cheats a little , how is that possible that he can manage so many fleets and still have a decent income.

Combat system is unbalanced. Kinetics op - even when they were designed for close combat they deal sick dmg at LONG range, just go full kinetics and every game is won.

Bomber units are useless.

UI could be a bit better. Becouse later in the game micromanaging your entire galaxy gets a bit annoying, yes there is an AI governor to help with that but that isn't always a good option to choose.

And many other small things that you will probably get annoyed by them and you will think "what the heck devs where thinking".

So yeah , its worth a money especialy when its on the sale. Buy it together with the Disharmony DLC becouse it adds lots of new stuff and overall gives a better player experience than vanilla.

This game owns and is one of the best space empire building games since GalCiv2. That being said, diplomatic victory is about as fun as watching paint dry and should be avoided at all costs unless you're achievement hoarding.

Endless Space is a game mostly about thought, what are you going to research next, what system to colonize next, where to send that ship, what system to invade next, and whether or not you should start that galactic war. It takes more thought and curiosity of how everything works including the factions. Every faction works in a different way, Cravers are a war monging faction you can't ally with, and the United Empire kills anything weaker than them pretty much. Everything you know about games is most likely different here.

The factions that you have are, The Cravers, The Automatons, The Harmony, The United Empire, The Sheredyn, The Pilgrims, The Horatio, The Amoeba, The Sowers, The Hissho, The Sophons, and if you buy the Disharmony DLC your own custom faction. Each faction has a different play-style with two different types of gameplay. Isolationists, and Expansionists. The words explain themselves, but expansionists really do a LOT of expanding, and the Isolationists colonize what's near them and try to stay away from the others. You also have two different types of ways to play. Do you want to take a military campaign until you control every system in the galaxy and have full control for yourself or do you want to research until victory. There are a few types of victory, expansionist victory, science victory, military victory, and diplomacy victory. Each one is of course special in its own way.

Let's continue victories here. If you want the expansionist victory just play an expansionist campaign BUT beware because you will need some military in order to defend yourself but in order to get the Expansionist victory you must have 75% of the galaxy under your control. Science victory you just research until your at the end of a research tree and the rest is pretty easy. Military victory is my favorite because it requires you to take everything by force and have a science ally, if you don't have an ally that's good for science you will NOT be getting very much tech because you should be contributing your time into military. Diplomatic victory requires you to just have your trade routes and play an isolationist until you can buy about 75% of the systems out, and when you can't buy the systems take them so it's kind of a expansionist/military victory mix.

The combat, the combat is kind of hard to explain besides kind of turn based/RTS mix. The combat you have to select your attack tactic, the tactics you will use for the battle, and your fleets positioning. You have to think about it because if you mess up and get the wrong thing you're going to end up losing your fleet. Also for the combat you have to watch your MP or Military Power so that you don't die immediatly when you go into a battle expecting to win no matter what like I did my first time because it was 1 ship vs 1 ship... Continuing, the combat also has great graphics to go along with it.

Every galaxy is different also. That is all I have to say about this game, I hope I helped you on buying the game or not.
