This game is amazing. Not many words to describe it on its own, so I'll take two games and put them together to describe it. Space invaders and AudioSurf. Nuff said go have fun!

It started off very smooth and enjoyable but by the 244th song it got quite stale. By then it wouldn't be a surprise if other players would have memorized all the possible patterns enemies follow (whether you play on the lowest or highest difficulty).

In the higher difficulties, the playing field felt very confining. This provides a good challenge but at the same time, it feels very limiting if you're someone who prefers freedom of movement like what you see in Beat Hazard.

I try to phase the game out when doing long-winded tasks (such as 840 minutes played and 244 songs completed). Unfortunately, the game will auto-pause when you tab out. You can't even move the window to the corner of your screen in case you want to phase out and multi-task for some casual playing. Add to that the fact that this game unfortunately uses a lot more resources than Beat Hazard.

It's a aesthetically beautiful game but it could not keep things fresh until the end.

WARNING 1:

This game is causing hateness to favourite songs and addiction.

WARNING 2:

If you are listening to heavy fast music = dont use it in game.

This is another one of those games that was built for a tablet, rather than a PC first, and then was ported... and it shows.

Shooter games rely upon precision, but touchscreen-based tablets lack that utterly, so they made a game where you are hypothetically encouraged to use precision, but where your shots sweep the whole battlefield, your ship takes up a massive space (much larger than it appears!), and enemy bullets are likewise far larger than they appear, leading to deaths from things that miss your ship entirely.

But who cares?! You get infinite lives, anyway! Plus, it's not like it matters half the time, anyway, because your shots can be upgraded to so overpowered that you kill everything before you even realize it's there, and firing in all directions. It's such that "play" largely involves just collecting powerups with proper timing to keep a chain alive.

Since score is the only thing that determines how well you did, (you can "beat" a song by simply walking away from the keyboard for the full length of the song, no participation required,) then collecting note powerups at the precise timing to keep a chain alive is literally the only thing (besides purposefully underpowering your ship to up a challenge modifier) that exists as a means of judging skill.

I would only recommend it to people who really love their music library, and just want even more excuse to listen to it.

This game is great! You battle enemies to the beat of your music, the enemies speed up or slow down due to the tempo and beat of the music. It's especially good if you have TV/Movie theme songs. Graphics are beautiful, nice variety of enemies and the customisable ship is lovely, I reccomend the double blasters on all four sides.

Only problem is the random boss fights that will happen in the middle of the song, no way of just playing a free mode, story mode or go home. It might be alright when you finish the story, but it's rather annoying when you're playing a short song and a guy just pops out of nowhere and says "fite meh"

Bosses also get very repetitive, every sheet of music you collect brings along a new type of boss, more annoying than the last.

But this is definitely such a fun game, so buy it.

Symphony is not your average bullet hell shooter. It seems to be more flashy and the story it has seems a bit like "ah, we need to add a plot, what should we do?" "just add something it doesnt matter anyway...". And it really doesnt matter because:

+You can add your own music to be played as levels!
+Has at least a little build-in "Plot" and also 5 different bosses to fight
+Nicely done diffuculties
+Customize your ship to suit your playstyle
+ACHIEVEMENTS!

-Controller works, but the menu controls seem to be buggy. Sometimes you hear the courser move but u dont see it Oo
-Stage design is always thesame. It only changes colours depending on the speed of the song
-You have to beat each boss 5 times and they seems to not change their movesets

To put it all together:
Love it. A great game for all bullet hell and music lovers out there!

I love the game, its a game that lets me use my own music and also has an old arcade shooting type to it. I love that you can build your ship as well

Your music is under attack! Go save it!!!!
Seriously though, this game is great fun. A top-down arcade shooter, it employs a mouse to move your ship and the left mouse button to shoot.
It's a wonderful idea that's well implemented, and different from other music base games. Yes, I'm referring to Beat Hazard.
While Beat Hazard is certainly fun, the tiered unlock system leaves something to be desired. In Symphony, all items, whether they're ship weapons or power ups picked up in the game are generated per song. So each song is its own item, which can be unlocked or not, and upgraded or not. Oh, the choices.
Other than that it's pretty straightforward. Lots of flashy neon graphics and the use of your own music means the replay value is high. Just don't try any EDM if you're not ready for that kind of insanity.

I didn't know what to expect with this unique little indie title. From the logo, it looked like it was going to be boring as hell and pretentious. But once I installed and got it going, I was pleasently surprised. This game takes a unique concept-scan every single music file on your hard drive (iTunes music is excluded because .AAC files aren't compatible-the only downside), and create a bullet hell game about a horde of demons invading music-your music. Sounds ludicrous enough, but what really makes this game work is that not only each "level" designed like a traditional bullet hell game, but you get to play it as your music's blasting in the background with varying difficulty depending on the song. It's a suprisingly enjoyable, over-the-top (can't believe I'm saying this) blast.

I got this game as part of a Humble Bundle a couple of months ago and I regret not playing it until now.
Seriously.

The game struck me like Audiosurf before I played it (I didn't look at the store page)
I was horribly mistaken.

This game has one huge thing that Audiosurf did not. Purpose.
In audiosurf, you're just collectng blocks for the sake of it. There's no real rhyme or reason as to why you are, you just are.

In this game, you fight against monsters who use your music against you, taking it away, and making you weaker. The intro struck me because the game throws you straight in front of these two glowing eyes and a glitchy demon voice, explaining how, 'Music is the product of intelligent beings' and how it's his gateway.

You fight to free parts of "The Symphony of Souls" which was created by the demon, or whatever he is for that manner, and his subordinates, who, coincidentally, are abducted composers. Go figure.

The weapon system is very cool, the fact that you can choose four different weapons, each working a different way, to fight off the waves.

The leaderboard system is interesting as well, because, the weaker you are, the higher your base score multiplier.

You also unlock different difficulty levels as you free parts of the Symphony.

Now for the breakdown:

Pros:
Story
Built in song library
Fleshed out weapon system
Weapon Customization (Upgrades, Rotration, firing type, etc)
Bosses

Cons:
You Die, A Lot (Unlimited lives though)
Having your own music makes the geme more personal
Leaderboards don't always recognise songs
Mildly annoying firing effects

tl;dr Veterans and newbies alike will enjoy this game that fuses elements of classic vertical shooters, and rhythm games

Good for casual fun
This game is fairly entertaining and good if you want to blow something up while listening to your music. It is really addicting in the beginning, because you'll be playing songs to unlock weapons for your ship and getting points to upgrade them. I really like that you can rotate the weapons around to make them shoot at different angles in the ship customization. The game is pretty easy, since you have infinite lives; so you can't fail. Each death however, does reduce your score and thus earn you less points.

However the game does come with many flaws. The first annoyance is that there is no search feature for songs, like in Osu! So if you have a large library of songs, you can't use a search function to find the song you want to play. There is a filter system, but it's not optimal at all.
As for actual gameplay, some of the design choices will annoy you, your ship has an amazingly large hitbox and you barely have space to actually manoeuvre around. Enemies will spawn in front and at the side, so sometimes you will have absolutely no room to move at all. Some of the hits can one shot you. There are so many flashy particles on screen that you sometimes can't see the enemies or bullets coming.
Dying is one of the worst feeling ever, not because you lose points, but it feels like an eternity. When you die, you want to jump back right in, but instead you have to wait for quite some while before you respawn. When you respawn, you don't clear the screen of enemies, so if there are a lot of enemies left on screen, you'll end up dying again.
As you progress further into the game, it only goes downhill from there. At higher difficulty, more enemies spawn with higher hitpoints, making it frustrating to move around and survive. It does give you more points, but by the time you unlock the final difficulty, you would already have unlocked the normal weapons and upgrades you want. The only motivation for you to play the songs after 7 hours of playtime is to either hope for a rare weapon (which is just a more powerful version of the normal weapons you can unlock) or to progress the 'story' of the game.

Overal I did had some fun with the game, but it comes with many annoyances. If you don't have a lot of music or don't like to listen to music, I wouldn't recommend the game; you need over 100 songs at least to fully enjoy the game. Also if you a hardcore Shoot 'Em Up player (like TouHou), you probably won't enjoy this game either. The game isn't 'challenging', but it is fun to shoot at stuff and get better weapons.

I rate this game 63 out of 100 points.

One Word: Gorgeous.
Symphony is absolutely amazing and well-balanced to boot for the difficulty. Just choose your song and go, save the musical world. It's fun, fast-paced, and definitily worth a few bucks.

much like other games that use your music this one is extremly adictive. the music scanner dose tend to chock on non music files in the folders you teill it to scan so best to keep your folders clean of nasty things like exe etc or expect it to barff when scanning your libary.

This game is a great way to just sit and relax to your own music while playing a game. It uses your own music library and you can choose the songs that you play. I would like a little better option on how the songs are lsited, but still a great game to just sit and waste a few hours.

I'm not much of a music guy, but if you have a large library (like 100+ good songs) and a lot of free time, Symphony is freaking fantastic. The walls are a bit confining, especially as the difficult goes up, but the game is still enjoyable.

Also: This game runs crazy well. I'm getting consistent 50-60 FPS on a 2010 Macbook Air (bloom OFF). If you have a steam account, you'll probably be able to run the game fine.
