This game is amazing. Not many words to describe it on its own, so I'll take two games and put them together to describe it. Space invaders and AudioSurf. Nuff said go have fun!

An absouletly fabulous game-- beautiful and well made-- easy to pick up, difficult to master... etc. There are a lot of things I could say about the experience that is Symphony, but it really is hard to put into words. If you're farmiliar with musical lingo, and fluent in reading sheet music, then this game will become one of the most entertaining and musically stimulating experiences.

Have you noticed I've been refering to it as an experience? Well, I mean, this is one of the only titles I know in which you can import in speedcore techno and rock out while going through a horribly difficult bullet hell, and immediately swap over to something calm and classical while stil destroying interesting and yet heavily frustrating enemy types.

Pros:
Can import ALMOST any song and play it to your difficulty level
Awesome menu music
Fun upgrades and weapons
Replayibility
Auto fire options

Cons:
You cannot import songs longer than 10 minutes
Can get painfully difficult
Bosses are spontainious and impossible to predict their encounters
Enemies can be unforgiving if you lose a ship part
Upgrading ship parts gets really expensive

Overall 8/10. Buy it if you like bullet hell shooters, or even just arcade style games.

It started off very smooth and enjoyable but by the 244th song it got quite stale. By then it wouldn't be a surprise if other players would have memorized all the possible patterns enemies follow (whether you play on the lowest or highest difficulty).

In the higher difficulties, the playing field felt very confining. This provides a good challenge but at the same time, it feels very limiting if you're someone who prefers freedom of movement like what you see in Beat Hazard.

I try to phase the game out when doing long-winded tasks (such as 840 minutes played and 244 songs completed). Unfortunately, the game will auto-pause when you tab out. You can't even move the window to the corner of your screen in case you want to phase out and multi-task for some casual playing. Add to that the fact that this game unfortunately uses a lot more resources than Beat Hazard.

It's a aesthetically beautiful game but it could not keep things fresh until the end.

I thought Beat Hazard was an awesome music-drive shooter... and then I came across Symphony. And al l Ican say is... Why didn't I get this game earlier? While it's not as intense (or hard on the eyes) as Beat Hazard, it's just as deep. Unlocking new weapons and upgrades, playing through your own music collection, amazing visuals... all of these make for an amazing shooter driven by your music. You'll enjoy this game as much as you enjoy your music (unless you don't listen to music, then you're on your own).

Space invaders meets Guitar Hero in this strange yet completely absorbing lil indie number!
Load up your music library (if your like me just pick a few folders as the first time I attempted my entire music collection I think I killed the game!)

Shoot the baddies! they are f**king everywhere in all shapes and sizes! this is your main perogative, rack up those points whilst bopping along to your favourite tracks or discover that album you randomly accquired but have never listened too.
Then whilst you're happily playing general red face comes along and tells you how much of a b*llend hes been and how his minions are trying to steal your music soul! Destroy that m*therf**ker and rescue those composers!

Seriously, this game is addictive, you dont need to think you just need to do. excellent relaxation game, fast paced (depending on your music taste!) awesomely bright visuals and good look trying to figure out why those birds are there amongst tadpoles and triangles!

Get this game, its f**king crazy :D

Much in the style of Beat Hazard, Symphony is a chaotic shooter powered by your personal music collection.
Rather than being a twin stick shooter, Symphony is more of a vertically scrolling shmup. As you play through your library of music, you will unlock different pieces of equipment to build ships out of. Each piece has a specific response to music, so a subwoofer launcher will fire a huge burst every time there is a strong bass note. This novel interactivity between the ship and music means you can design a ship to specifically be most effective with a certain song or genre.
It’s a super cool concept and I really enjoy being able to play a game that connects with my music library in this way.

This is another one of those games that was built for a tablet, rather than a PC first, and then was ported... and it shows.

Shooter games rely upon precision, but touchscreen-based tablets lack that utterly, so they made a game where you are hypothetically encouraged to use precision, but where your shots sweep the whole battlefield, your ship takes up a massive space (much larger than it appears!), and enemy bullets are likewise far larger than they appear, leading to deaths from things that miss your ship entirely.

But who cares?! You get infinite lives, anyway! Plus, it's not like it matters half the time, anyway, because your shots can be upgraded to so overpowered that you kill everything before you even realize it's there, and firing in all directions. It's such that "play" largely involves just collecting powerups with proper timing to keep a chain alive.

Since score is the only thing that determines how well you did, (you can "beat" a song by simply walking away from the keyboard for the full length of the song, no participation required,) then collecting note powerups at the precise timing to keep a chain alive is literally the only thing (besides purposefully underpowering your ship to up a challenge modifier) that exists as a means of judging skill.

I would only recommend it to people who really love their music library, and just want even more excuse to listen to it.

A fun top-down shooter thing with levels randomly generated based on your music. It is very entertaining, and the more songs you play the more weapons, difficulties and progress you unlock. This game is seriously fun, as well as rewarding you for making things difficult for yourself by giving you higher score multipliers for weaker weapon loadouts.

It was fun while it lasted, I like the fact that you can add in your m=own music to the game, but the main missions feel like they end a bit fast and reaching the end game weapons seems a bit too easy. There could have been a bigger variety in weapons as well, but for the price, this was a pretty fun game.

Write Review: 8/10

This game is great! You battle enemies to the beat of your music, the enemies speed up or slow down due to the tempo and beat of the music. It's especially good if you have TV/Movie theme songs. Graphics are beautiful, nice variety of enemies and the customisable ship is lovely, I reccomend the double blasters on all four sides.

Only problem is the random boss fights that will happen in the middle of the song, no way of just playing a free mode, story mode or go home. It might be alright when you finish the story, but it's rather annoying when you're playing a short song and a guy just pops out of nowhere and says "fite meh"

Bosses also get very repetitive, every sheet of music you collect brings along a new type of boss, more annoying than the last.

But this is definitely such a fun game, so buy it.

Got this game on Humble Bundle and sincerely, i didnt expect anything from Sympohny. Also never been a fan of music games like Audiosurf or Guitar Hero. However, this little game surprised me. Basicaly, this game mix the music game genre with the "arcade-space-shooter" genre, and the result is simple but fantastic. Even if the main story line is short, you will have plenty of fun playing with your own music. The graphics feel smooth, and the gameplay just works fine. You can play in 6 different skill levels, there are plenty of updgrades you can do to your ship. I definetly reccomend it for anyone who wants to play something fresh and clean casually.

It's a good game for first few hours, then you can uninstall it, and forget about it completely. There are combinations which you can put your ship at the middle, and it auto-kills everything that enters the screens. So if you want to complete achievements, you can pick a long song, then leave your pc to do your daily stuff, and check occasionally to see if song has finished or not.

Fun game with beautiful visuals and design, it looks really lovely and stylish, like a symphony should be. But gets old after 3rd time listening, which a symphony should never be.

In Short:

This game is for those who like 2D plane slightly angled from top-down shoot em' ups in which one is predominantly dodging and destroying enemies that move and act in response to the tempo and all else of ones' (favorite) audio over a minute and thirty seconds long (that is on the computer you are playing on), then this game is for you.

Note: The enemies rarely fire at you, but unlike bullet-hells, you're entire ship is the hitbox, so enemies can be smashed into, but it will damage your ship. Luckily you can repair it via collecting "Music Notes" (dropped points) from enemies one has shot to death after your ship lost part of itself (took damage).

Notice, any audio over 1:30 minutes will do, so for you oddballs out there who feel like playing to audiobooks or whatever else you come up with, have fun.

In Depth:

Warning... there are probably spoilers (if you think there can be spoilers for a shoot 'em up that is not a bullet-hell)... they are more of descriptions of how the game works... which is why I think it is good...

Any audio over a minute thirty long can be used to play the game.

One have 4 guns that are individually rotatable, all of which they can individually be bound to left click to fire, right click to fire, or always (infinite) fire... the game can be really easy on the fingers due to the infinite fire mode.

One can move ones' ship around the screen with your mouse much like you would a cursor.

Each of those 4 guns and the parts of ones' ship they mount to can be destroyed, as well as the entire ship itself if the center of it gets hit. The ship comes with 4 stock guns. All weapons can be upgraded to level 5 (the higher the level the deadlier of course) based off of points/point goals on songs that you finish playing through.

Ones' ship usually loses parts/gets destroyed when you crash into enemies or on the occasions' they shoot you (or you get to close to certain units and they blow up). Luckily you can repair it via collecting "Music Notes" (dropped points) from enemies one has shot to death after your ship lost part of itself (took damage).

When one dies one respawns seconds later (may feel like forever if your invested in the level) and as one defeat bosses that randomly get attributed to songs one plays. Each boss unlocks part of a sheet of the Symphony of Souls. Each page represents a higher difficulty level to unlock... so yes... one starts off weak, but sit back and enjoy the audio whilst it is easy if you are a Hardcore player, otherwise keep it easy or do as you wish.

The game comes with pre-stocked music from a handful of genres... but I shall not review it, for everyone has their preferences and it is limited compared the amount of music one loves that one will probably add to it to play.

The long opinion filled babble-esque review follows that might have as many "spoilers," if not more, as above:

You may actually listen to rather than just hear your songs for once since your focusing on playing your song rather than having audio in the background as you focus on something else.

Playing a game whilst having an excuse to listen to your (favorite) music without having to listen to the games audio... always grand... but there is nothing like playing a shooter that integrates and interacts with your music/audio files that are a minute in a half or longer. The proof the game interacts is the pace of the enemies, color of the background, and the subwoofer weapon...

This game is unique in that it has 4 weapon slots and one can customize which way the weapons face on the ship, the ships weapons (and ship itself) can be destroyed... but as long as the ship remains intact, one can collect music (drops) from deceased enemies to repair ones' ship. One can also configure any of the weapons to independently of one another fire with the left/right mouse buttons and infintie fire (2 guns on left click, the 3rd on infinite fire, the 4th on right click, sure, all on any of them, all the power to you, etc.)

One can upgrade weapons, but if one is not very good at the game, one simply has to play more songs on the lower difficulty levels to get the points required to upgrade weapons. 2 point systems, one is based off the score you received upon finishing a level, and the other is based off reaching set scores for that difficulty for that song... both of which are required to upgrade weapons... the former of the two is only required to unlock weapons... and there is only 1 weapon unlock per song.

Every song is processed by the game the first time you play the song, in order to generate that level (difficulty is irrelevant). The processing process also decides if a boss will be attributed to that song (thus there will never be a boss on a level you have not played). There is a timer to defeat the boss, if one fails to defeat the boss may move to a different difficulty level in the same song, but will still be attributed to that song.

One unlocks (parts of) sheet music... the Symphony of Souls... as one does so one unlocks higher difficulties. The bosses get progressively harder to defeat. When one defeats a boss that song is freed (no fighting a boss on that song again).

Is that enough babbling? Now go play the game to Portal's "Still Alive" song(s)... they are free after all... Steam Music... and yes there is a way to download them without having the game installed... it is just a pain for it requires console commands... you might catch that the game is out of Beta on time... I never heard that before playing the song in Symphony.

A easy-to-pick-up bullet hell shooter with the best soundtrack there is: Your own! I found Symphony a great way to rediscover the gems of my own growing music collection and I highly recommend it for something a little different.
