A perfect place. A city without traffic. A dog that doesn't poop. All products of the brilliant mind of Dr. X, but hell hath no fury like a mad scientist fired by a giant corporation. In this unique action-puzzler you take control of TOM, a virus created for one purpose: revenge.

Hack your way through brain scrambling puzzles while maneuvering through a thumb cramping maze of enemies. Team up through over 50 cooperative levels in what MMGN is calling "The most addictive co-op game we've played since Portal 2." And if the over 100 levels aren't enough, you and your friends can destroy each other again and again in battle mode to determine just who is the supreme virus.

Key Features:

  • Single Player mode with over 50 levels across 6 distinct areas
  • Cooperative mode (for up to 4 players) with over 50 additional levels in which "friendships will be destroyed"
  • Battle for supreme virus-itude by battling your friends in Battle Mode
  • Evolving mechanics which ratchet up the difficulty from lollipop to soul crushing
  • An animated tale full of dark humor, malfunctioning robots, and little girl screams

I really wanted to like this game. Pipe Dream was one of my favorite games of my childhood. That's why I picked up this game. But the game relies heavily on quick player reactions. This would not be a big problem if the controls were more responsive or more intuitive (played with keyboard). It makes it frustrating sometimes. Especially when the stages have so many damn spiders.

Not a bad game. But I could not enjoy my time with it.

I really do want to recommend this game. The aesthetics, the humor, the character design of T.O.M., the snazzy soundtrack (the one positive thing I got from this game) are fantastic, but ultimately the gameplay is where the game fails to understand itself.

If you have played the demo, you might actually find the game interesting and fun with the pipe-linking puzzle game A Virus Named TOM wants you to believe it is. But once you get to the middle of the second area/world/level/whatever, the game suddenly becomes a time-rush game. The main problem with this game is it wants you to take your time to figure out the puzzles, yet it also rushes you to solve the solutions when your health is your time-limit, slowly degrading or getting boosted by maneuvering around certain enemies.

What makes the gameplay worse is it makes you work under a clock to solve puzzles where you CAN'T see your progress. So that means you have to memorize each level or write down the grids of each level on a piece of paper, work it out on your desk, THEN do it as quick as possible while not getting hurt by enemies that take away your health/time. Some might argue that the skip-tokens let you get past those frustrating levels, but the game just continues to get more frustrating. I couldn't even imagine trying to convince someone to play cooperative with me on the later levels.

Control-wise, I think the best way I can explain my problem with the controls is that I always feel tied to an anchor. Whether you use a controller or the keyboard, you have to hold a button down to interact with a section of the grid. Combine this mechanic with having to dodge enemies quickly and you'll find yourself having to either double-take routes on the grid or you accidentally slide into an enemy you didn't mean to get in its way.

If there is A Virus Named TOM 2, however slim the possibility is, I hope the devs choose one type of puzzle or the other. Testing your reflexes or testing your puzzle-solving is fine, but testing both at the same time is a challenge in frustration, not of fair difficulty.

This game is well crafted, however the mechanics are more twitch reaction based and less puzzle solving. Since the core goal is to alway solve the tile turning puzzle this becomes frustrating quickly. The developers tried to compensate by allowing the player to automatically skip levels, but this doesn't correct the core problem since the level after the one you skipped has the same problems.

If you have always wanted a twitch reaction tile puzzle game, this one may be perfect for you. Otherwise you may lose interest quickly, as I did.
