* It's an old, hard game; runs in 4:3 fixed low resolution
* know your controls! Z=shoot, B=slow movement/fast shoot, C=bomb, V=pause (thanks HeavyKin!)
* you must download english translation for this game (eg here
* easy/hard mode does change things... until it comes to bosses. Boss fight is always purely insane!
* 3 characters = 3 different shooting styles, 3 different dialogue stories (I think it sum up to whole plot)
* the game may feel kinda short, though you will be proud when you beat the last boss!
* get some wallpapers of this game, they are great

Imagine playing on a broken computer that either wouldnt load the company name or just flat out wont load at all... THAT WOULD BE NORMAL! Compared to .EXEtreme bullet loli! Out of all of these kinds of bullet hell games... Touhou, no more heroes volodarski challenge, ect... Its not hard! But it feels likes its something. So in the words of the god "The GaminBrit" Or is there a second disk? If there is I bet its solid fricken gold! But im not touching it with a ten foot pole!

I wrote a review of this game previously, however, I hadn't played very much of it at the time and deleted it later. Coming back to this game, my opinion has not changed. Understanding that this is a cheap game, you have to very much look into the motto "You get what you pay for". For 3 dollars, Gun Bullet Children feels like it was put together for a similar price. The graphics are quite ugly - I'm not entirely sure if the somewhat pixel-like graphics are actually intentional, or the result of the default resolution being very low, which to my knowledge, is unchangeable. What I am sure of is that the bullets themselves are quite jarring - they all appear in an oversaturated, almost neon red. It honestly reminds me of something out of MS paint.

In terms of story, it's a bullet hell game. Story really shouldn't be the main focus, but what I can understand from a playthrough with an english patch is that vampires have started terrorizing humanity, and the church is trying to fight back. Thus, you can choose from one of three of the pope's elite waifus. None of the characters, to me, really play well. There are different types of attacks per each character - one having a narrow attack, one having a wide attack, but I can't really feel like there's much of a difference between them; they all feel like the same mess. It doesn't help much when there isn't any allowance for diagonal movement, so using a controller is very anoying and it feels nearly impossible to control; thus your best shot is using a keyboard.

All in all, the saying "You get what you pay for" really applies here. The enemies are repetitive and the conveyance is pretty bad - it actually took me a while to figure out how to deploy my charged attack; to do so, you have to hold the pause button while holding the fire button. Why it couldn't have it's own key, I don't know. The gameplay is generally unfavorable, as bullets can feel pretty hard to dodge and it's not entirely clear where your hitbox is at times. All in all, you get a messy bullet shooter with pretty repugnant graphics, a forgettable soundtrack, very frustrating controls, and the one flaw that makes me want to set this game on fire: pressing the escape key, the one that MANY games use to pause, will close the game without warning. No pop up "are you sure?", no warning. It can close in the middle of gameplay and it has done this several times when I was intending to pause. You can only imagine how exremely frustrating this would be.

All in all, I wouldn't recommend this game to either people looking to try out the bullet hell genre, or people who are experienced in it.

Ok guys, this recommendation is more like guideline, so im going to tell my opinion about this game right now, if you are new on this game, just bought it or something, check out the text down there, it might help you out. But now to the game itself:

+ Really good few hour gaming experience
+ If you are new to bullethell or you want to try it, add this to your cart when the next sales comes (Or download touhou), its so much fun.
+ The trading cards are worth about 0,20€ each.

- No proper instructions
- Pretty expensive compared to the length of game (If on summer sales or winter sales, totally worth it)
- Pressing ESC will shut down the game (Not pausing)
- Needs English sub patch if you dont want to see random symbols

And now my guide for the starters of this game:

Okay, first thing I'd like to let you know about this game is that THERE IS NO ENGLISH SUBTITLES UNLESS YOU DOWNLOAD THE PATCH FROM THE INTERNET. There is really simple Guide by hum79 that can help you get that thing done.

Now to the game. In the beginning, you select options with arrow keys. To select, you need to press Z. Also you might want to try the PRACTISE MODE before you try the MISSION mode, just to try the characters. Also if you are new to bullethell games, my advice is to change the mode from NORMAL to EASY from options (Unless it already on EASY).

Now lets move to the gameplay, which might feel a little weird at the start of the game. You shoot from Z, Slow by holding X and use your BOMB pressing C. You also have this bar on your left which will fill when killing enemies. When its full, release Z (Shoot) and press it again to do decent damage blast. At the start you have 3 lives and 3 BOMBS, but you can collect these blue crystal-like pieces from enemies. When you collect them you can gain extra life. The enmies also drop Purple crystals that are called "Reinforcement". When you collect the amount that the bar on your right side shows, you get the reinforcement and start shooting more bullets and much faster.

Well thats pretty much it I hope this recommendation helped someone, if not, im terribly sorry. Have a nice time playing this game!

What are the good things about this game?
-Very intense and fast bullets coming your way! Very nice.
-There are six different stages and three different difficulties.

What are the bad things about this game?
-Playing this game requires 60 fps. If you do not have 60 fps, you need to go through a fix to get the game to run 60 fps. This game is intended to run at 60 fps, not 30, not 15. 60!
-The game itself doesn't support anything XP and higher... which is why you will randomly frame lag and feel that the pace of the game is very slow. Find a fix to make the game run 60 FPS and you are good.

-Everything is in Japanese... but Steam should've already told you so this isn't a complaint...

This game would have been a 10/10 but considering players would have to go through the trouble to fix a game rather than an update from its developers, I'll give it a 9.5 out of 10 instead.

eXceed Gun Bullet Children is the first game in the eXceed series (duh) and is probably the most forgotten one due to the source of its game being lost long ago. Other than its issues, the game itself is enjoyable, but not quite as enjoyable as the 2nd or 3rd game. I'm going to state the issues now and get to the real review later:

-The game is always full screen at a very low resolution, which gets annoying for when I accidentally hit the Windows key and the game decides to crash at a white screen when I go back to it (this can be fixed by using the game with DxWnd, though).
-Pause is more like "stop" to the game. I press it, and I can't unpause it, so I have to restart.
-The whole game is at a very slow FPS rate before you apply a Compatility Tool (find it in the Steam forums or search Microsoft's site) fix. With the fix it went from 15 to 30 FPS, but with certain compatibility modes applied along with the fix, I got a full 60 FPS, though going faster during the story scenes (talking scenes, whatever). However, this worked for my computer, but didn't fix it for my laptop. It gets 20-28 FPS with the fix and modes, while 2nd and 3rd run perfect at 60 FPS with no fixes needed.

eXceed - Gun Bullet Children puts you in place of the three characters Tinatu Kagaya, Sowel Devosiana, and Miyabi Housen. Each character comes with a unique attack. Tinatu shoots three spears at once, Sowel fires a rapid blue thing, and Miyabi is basically a flame thrower (she shoots fire in a line at a high speed so why not?). The whole game's story is hard to read without the translation patch (find it in the Steam forums or do a web search). Pretty much, you're fighting against vampires. I haven't made it passed the first level though....because I keep hitting V, the Windows key, and sometimes my pinky will slip and hit Control. I honestly wouldn't have minded a remake of this game since the source is gone and they can't update it, but come on, Capcom really could have remade this game themselves instead of releasing a very old version of it that even they themselves can't update or fix.

Overall I'll give this game 3/5. Most of the rating goes to the controls and how pressing Control can instantly take you out of the game and how pressing V ("pause") will set you in an infinite pause and you'll have to restart the game, needing a compatibility fix and translation patch doesn't effect this rating at all since they're so easy to find, so take off 2/5 for this, but keep the 3/5 for how fun the game is until you mess it up.

Also if I could make a suggestion, just skip this game and play 2nd and 3rd. Coming from my computers (my desktop and my laptop) they both have no issues, as far as I've seen, and don't need any fixes or translation patches, and as far as I know the only things you'll really miss are the three characters in this game and who they are and what they do, which all that is pretty obvious from the first level of this game, they're humans fighting against vampires.

This game is included with the trilogy for completeness sake. It's not a remake of their completely amateur indie game from 2005, it IS that game. Complete with low resolution, ESC quits instantly without prompt, and no English translation. I played with each character on each difficulty. On easy, it was boring during most of the stage sections, with nearly 10 seconds between enemies who just sit there until you kill them point blank before they fire a shot. Many of the shots they DO manage were underwhelming. The boss battles were generally simple, except for 4 or 5 completely BS attacks that don't belong with the rest. On the other difficulties, IT'S THE EXACT SAME ENEMIES AND SHOT PATTERNS, except now normal enemies release a few extremely slow random shots when they die (which actually makes those parts easier, because flying close to bullets recharges your special attack), and the bosses literally just fire a handful of slow randomly aimed round bullets along with the existing pattern. Also, I'm barely mentioning the lack of enemy variety, and how all the bullets are red, even though 2 of the players have red shots. The final boss had fast lasers that were very difficult to see.

Luckily, this game is rather cheap, and part of a package with 2 much better games. I mostly played it to get the card drops. Get the package while it's on sale, the 3rd game alone is worth it. This game had a few patterns that were interesting, but for the most part I was bored. Even the stupid-hard attacks made me bored instead of mad, because I just sat there until my auto-bombs ended the attack. I believe I 1CC'd hard mode with the fire shooting girl, and now I have no reason to come back to this.

THIS...this would be absolutely effing epic if they could fix the fps, put in the steam overlay, and fix some of the controls, plus do a translation.

EDIT: go through forums. there's a fix for language and a fix for fps.
although.... the company themselves should be fixing this, not the customers.

Even as is, totally worth the $1 i paid for it.
Extremely underrated compared to the rest of the series.
the extremely long boss battles actually somewhat add to the gameplay, I think... kind of a mental endurance game.
Soundtrack is great. Shibuyan's also done a ton of Touhou Project arranges as well.

The game developers should push for steam acheivements, leaderboards, and some soundtrack dlc, etc. There's a lot of potential here that's being missed out on.

If you're a hardcore bullet hell fan, you likely already know everything there is to know about this game.

If you're a casual or average gamer who occasionally enjoys a trip through bullet hell, skip this title as there are much better shooters out there.

PROS - Controls are tight. Catch it on the right sale and you can get it for free once you sell the trading cards.

CONS - Low resolution (640x480 which can't be changed). No English.

MEH - Nearly everything else about this game.

This Game is some carzy ♥♥♥♥ I just don't even know what to say. Bethesda has done a great job with the apple I mac and now this, I just can't even put into words the absolute amazingness of this game. If Darth Vader was a game and Darth Vader was good this would be that Game. I know somewhere somehow E.T is looking down from Jesus at this game and even he can't compehend how this game is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ good. Even Undertaker can't understand and he Barista bombs people 24/7. This Game is Just class A material. For the lonely people there are so many hoes that you meet in this game it's ridic I have one of them on my Lap right now and she's so impressed by the Game she wont even look because her eyes are not worthy of veiwing such greatness

Sadly this game doesn't come with any translated text, all I see is symbols which are supposed to be Japanese characters (I assume since it's a Japanese game and I don't have those fonts installed)
The controls are a mess to figure out and there's not really any info (that I can understand) on how to play the game.

Of course that didn't stop me from fiddling around a bit and it turns out it's a bit of an "arcade style" 2D birds-eye view shooting game. Apparently there's a background story to it that's completely lost to me so if anyone with Japanese understanding would like to elaborate feel free to do so.

The shooting patterns become increasingly difficult to dodge and the entire game is accompanies by some techno beats that jell pretty well with the game in my opinion.

So if you're after anything story related this is a clear pass. If you just want to spend some time shooting stuff and dodging bullets in plain and simple shooter game, this is probably worth trying out.

I wouldn't spend anything over 1€ on this old-non-english game. So get it on sale or as an gift if you really want to try it.

My Little Sister Can't Possibly Be This Bland

I played the game for the first 3 levels and so far this game is pretty much what you'd get if you take Touhou and suck all the color and energy from it

Background is just gray and bland, music is just generic techno, enemy bullet patterns are usually just waves of red triangles and really boring to look at unlike Touhou where boss fights resemble fancy firework shows full of colors and diferent shapes

its 3€ tho so you could get it if you are reallly really bored
