About This Game

Legend of Grimrock is a dungeon crawling role playing game with an oldschool heart but a modern execution. A group of prisoners are sentenced to certain death by exiling them to the secluded Mount Grimrock for vile crimes they may or may not have committed. Unbeknownst to their captors, the mountain is riddled with ancient tunnels, dungeons and tombs built by crumbled civilizations long perished now. If they ever wish to see daylight again and reclaim their freedom the ragtag group of prisoners must form a team and descend through the mountain, level by level.

The game brings back the oldschool challenge with highly tactical real-time combat and grid-based movement, devious hidden switches and secrets as well as deadly traps and horrible monsters. Legend of Grimrock puts an emphasis on puzzles and exploration and the wits and perception of the player are more important tools than even the sharpest of swords could be. And if you are a hardened dungeon crawling veteran and you crave an extra challenge, you can arm yourself with a stack of grid paper and turn on the Oldschool Mode which disables the luxury of the automap! Are you ready to venture forth and unravel the mysteries of Mount Grimrock?

Key Features:

  • Explore a vast network of ancient tunnels, discover secrets and find a way to survive in the perilous dungeons of Mount Grimrock.
  • Cast spells with runes, craft potions with herbs and fight murderous monsters with a wide variety of weaponry.
  • Create a party of four characters and customize them with different races, classes, skills and traits.
  • Pure blooded dungeon crawling game with grid-based movement and thousands of squares riddled with hidden switches, pressure plates, sliding walls, floating crystals, forgotten altars, trapdoors and more.
  • Includes the following digital extras: a beautifully crafted game manual, Legend of Grimrock world map, custom made grid paper, Grimrock theme music, art sheets illustrating foul creatures of Grimrock, and Almost Human team photo.

Legend of Grimrock is an old-school dungeon crawling game which is inspired by games like Dungeon Master oder Eye of the Beholder.

The game tells a story of four criminals whose crimes are forgotten by getting tossed into the maw of mount Grimrock. A massive mountain which holds a huge dungeon of untold horrors. No one has ever managed to escape this atrocity. No one but, well you might guessed it, you !

You are in control of the four criminals. You can either chose a preset of four ready-to-go characters or create your own party. Once you are in the Dungeon your job is to find a way out. You can move your party from tile to tile and can only perform 90° turns to the left or right. This sounds quite simple and to many quite boring, but Legend of Grimrock does a fantastic job of keeping things fresh and interesting.

As you progress through the dungeon you have to solve puzzles which become increasingly harder and sometimes force you to think in unconventional ways. But they are never unfair and can be solved with a decent amount of thinking and experimenting. The puzzles are the highlights of the game which are quite rewarding in most cases and keep you motivated as you progress deeper into the dungeon.

The combat system is rather simple but still challenging. As already mentioned you control four characters which are always standing on the same tile. On the bottom right of the screen you got the avatars of you characters which are also used to control you characters. If you left-click on a equipped melee weapon you will perform an attack with this weapon. The twist about this system is that the upper row of your characters represent the front row on the tile you are standing. Characters in the back row cant hit targets with melee weapons / attacks (with a few exceptions). So you are forced to build a solid mix of beefy warriors / melee characters that stand in front and weaker but also very useful range characters that stand in the back and cast spells or use throwing weapons or other types of ranged attacks.

If you have a mage in your party things really become interesting. The spell-system requires you to combine several runes in order to sucessfully cast a spell. And you have to do this during the fight in real time. So things can get a bit stressful if you fight off several enemies because you still want to use your other characters. There are no shortcuts you could use. You have to memorize the runes and the combinations to put your mage to use. To some of you this might sound disappealing but if you get the hang of it, it feels really great.

Technically the developers have done a great job. Some light effects in Legend of Grimrock are really great to look at, the textures are very sharp, the animations of enemies are great and fluid.

One of the downsides of this game is that it may lack a bit of variation. There are only 3 different looks in the dungeon. Some of you might think that this it no problem because a dungeon is a dungeon but even in that particular scenario you could do more than three different types of wall textures.

All in All Legend of Grimrock is a great expierence if you like solving challenging but rewarding puzzles and if you love exploration because you get to explore a lot. There are a lot of secrets to uncover in this vast dungeon.

A great and well rounded game that has just the right amout of difficulty and unforgiveness. Reminds me a lot of table top Dungeons and Dragons. My only complaint is there is hardly a punishment for death. When a character dies they can still hold torches and their inventory can still be opened. If I were to change something about this game it would be that dead characters can't hold torches(or provide light in any way) and also make it so either the dead character's inventory becomes locked or their inventory is split up into the other party members. Other than that I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys dungeons and dragons, dungeon crawlers, and even rogue likes. I give it a solid 9/10.

This game is pretty great if you like exploring dark dungeons where you have to think quickly to survive. Dodging traps, finding secrets and destroying monsters, what more could you want from a dungeon exploring RPG?

I don't have the heart to give this game a thumbs down (it looks great, and I really want to play it,) but an annoying mouse cursor artifact has thus far stopped me from playing it. Linux users with an AMD card (not all AMD cards might be affected,) beware.

One of the best adventure puzzle games I have played in ages! Reminds me of the old Swords and Serpents title that I loved so much. This is one of the few titles I have played though, only to immediately start again!

Dungeon master is one of my favorite game of all time.

Legend of grimrock is the best homage i've seen to date!

I wish they would have the same attention to details as DM had (weight system)

I want more!

In The Legend of Grimrock you control a party of four thrown into a dungeon atop a mountain and have to explore down through level after level looking for the exit to escape

I really enjoyed exploring this dungeon full of traps, monsters, puzzles, secrets and treasure. The graphics are very nice if a bit repetitive and the style of play was very refreshing as it's so different to anything else I've played in a long time.

It's a great benefit that the game also supports user made content so there's a ton of value for money and hundreds of hours of content if you want to explore more.

This game is incredibly fun and satisfying in an I want to rip my hair out when I play it kind of way. There are so many secrets and tricks that the perfectionist/completionists will absolutely have to play with a guide.

Probably just me, I find the puzzles way more frustrating than satisfying and be warned the game is 90% PUZZLES. A few here and there would have been been fun. Being stuck for hours is just frustrating and looking up solutions online is just plain work. I can see many really enjoying the game if that is what you like and these type of puzzles amuse you. I do applaud the old school vibe and it is clearly well made but for those hoping for an Eye of the Beholder type adventure you will probably be disappointed.

I love RPGs but I found this game rather dull and overly difficult. You control a party of four people from first person view, which is rather strange as it would seem to imply that you are walking in an unnatural two by two formation at all times. You only move in right angles as if on an invisible grid which is also a bit strange. I get that they probably don't have skyrim's budget but there were no characters to interact with, and your party is completely generic, everything is indoors, and even combat occurs with you walking in this strange way. You can expect to reload from a lot of saves.

I didn't like it and can't recommend it. There are better RPGs out there.

Sometimes old-school doesn't bring as much to the table as you might wish it would. This is one of those times, sadly. There was a reason that a lot of the "features" in this game were evolved beyond. While I do appreciate that this type of game is at least available, for those who enjoy a bit of pain with their gaming experience, it's definitely not a game I enjoyed or that caught my flagging RPG-based interest.

The only other thing that might have kept it installed and played a bit would have been if these guys had been smart enough to include STEAM Cards. Sadly, despite this being a fairly recent (past couple of years) title, it lacks those, as well.

A huge pass from me. Thankfully I either got this as a gift or paid very little for it. Whew!

NO, this is -NOT- RPG.
This is a super-repeating-to-death-pixel-hunting puzzle game.
Stay away from this if you want to play an RPG.

This is not Bard's Tale, Wizardry or Might and Magic, like it claims to be.
It is just a poor pathfinding puzzle game.

Its stat/skill system and combat mechanics are so broken that it doesn't just work out as they are supposed to be.

All you do is strafing and kiting the enemies by tile, then mindlessly walking back and forth pressing stupid plates and torturing your eyes to find random switches on the ever-same-looking walls, all the way through the day and night.

And am I supposed to have fun doing that crap? HELL NO.

If I wanted an action adventure, I would play a real one like BioShock, not this boring pseudo-action game riddled with god-awful puzzles.

This game is absolutely nauseating. The gameplay is repetitive and it's a walking around in circles simulator. And it's not an old-school RPG, whatsoever.
