What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Early Access allows us to involve the community during development and try out completely new things with a large community of players”

How long will this game be in Early Access?

“Until Q4 2014”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will have more content, less bugs, and will be free to play locally. Everyone who buys the game during Early Access will keep all functionality they have in the game.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We are currently experimenting with user created levels, improving network code, working on redesigning the UI, and more. There is a lot of work being done.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes and no. The local version of the game will be free, while online functionality will cost more or less similar. We intend to sell character skin packs which enable you to play online.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We are losing sleep over every comment posted on the forum. Shall we make boxes lethal?”

Update r31!

August 26th, 2014

We're all going to go to PAX PRIME in Seattle this weekend, where we'll have a HUGE booth where people can play SpeedRunners and where a very special and awesome thing is going to take place that we can't talk about yet, but definitely is going to be AWESOME!

Anyway, it's been a while since we did our last major update. Since then, we've released a lot of small updates, that we didn't feel were enough by themselves to mark it as a "new" update. For instance, we've changed the behaviour when landing on slopes a little bit. You now keep your momentum, resulting in high velocities if you do it right. Even though that's quite a game-changer, it was so small of a change that it was still considered as part of r30.

Seeing as we're leaving now for a week though, we thought it would be a good idea to try to make sure we did push an update for you all before we left. So, without further ado, here's UPDATE R31!

This update adds the first iteration of artwork for the ZOO level (formerly Prototype). We're going to animate some stuff later on, but this should already give you a good idea of what we're aiming for with this level. We've also updated some animations on Buckshot, Gil and 招き猫, most notably the latter's jump animation. We've also updated the Level Editor to be a bit more user-friendly and by popular request we've added a 'no items' option in custom games, amonst many other small things.

The full list of changes can be found here.

Enjoy!

Oh, and don't forget - if you're attending PAX, make sure to drop by our Booth (#6003 on the 6th floor, near the PAX10), especially on Saturday the 30th!

SpeedRunners PAX Prime Tournament-ish

August 22nd, 2014

A year ago was the first time we've shown SpeedRunners. It was PAX Prime and we had a tiny minibooth. Next week we are heading to PAX Prime once again. This time though we'll have 300sq feet dedicated to SpeedRunners, with 3 stations, huge bean bag chairs, and lots of things for you to win!

  • Location: Booth #6003 6th floor
  • PAX Prime 2014, Seattle, August 29-Sept 1.

Stuff to win:

3D Printed Trophies

We've experimented with 3D prints last couple of weeks and were able to get more or less presentable trophies done. We'll have a bunch of them, and depending on the amount, will decide the rules how to get them.

T-Shirts

Plenty of T-Shirts will be available for sale, and we will give away some during specific events at the show (i.e. play vs the developers)

A very, very special event

On Saturday August 30th we will have a very special event at our booth. You won't want to miss it. Details to follow!

Today's livestream will discuss what we're working on and what to expect of PAX Prime. It doesn't get archived since we talk about anything that we don't usually discuss publically. Tune in at 4PM CET on http://twitch.tv/tinybuild

Fastest way to destroy all of the 3 friends you will ever have. Worth it though.

Early Access Review
Let me preface this with the following: SpeedRunners is worth all the blood, sweat, and tears that went into the 10 dollars earned for buying this terriffic game.

SpeedRunners is a god damned anomaly, being in Early Access has not hindered this game's meaningfullness as a medium for entertainment and competitiveness. SpeedRunners features some really balanced gameplay, your skill is your skill, nothing else is the determining factor for success. You will run, jump, slide, and grapple your way through a series of levels, designed by mere mortals, as if they were designed my gods.

The only downside of this otherwise shining example of video game excellence, is the gosh darned lag! Lag can sometimes mess up an entire match, however, lately the net code has been polished to a shine, and is suitable for those who can't afford the highest internet.

Overall, I would give SpeedRunners a 9/10, it's fun, it's competitive, and it's everything you want it to be.

This is really really fun
I definitely plan on playing it a lot more :)
Oh and it's a nice party game too.
Great controls, features, variety, design... definitely solid for the platforming speed feel they were going for.
I'd recommend it mainly because of how fun it is

Early Access Review
A creatively imagined multiplayer game. A surprisingly pleasant alternative to the brawler-type of multiplayer that has become so commonplace (e.g. samurai gunn, starwal, towerfall, bit-brawlers, brawlhalla, etc...), SpeedRunners offers players a spectrum of depth in gameplay. At its base, this game is a racing platformer, rewarding players who learn the turns and obstacles of various unique levels while punishing those who make mistakes. Perfectionism at its finest. This fine work does offer a deeper level of competition, however, if players chooses to exploit the nuances of the game's physics. With the mention of the glory of this game, I must also point out the negatives, which are frustratingly apparent within the first 5 minutes of gameplay. The matchmaking system is extremely unreliable, despite the implementation of a ranking system (albeit new). There are constant bugs in just about any multiplayer game, which would be endurable in a more forgiving game. The glitches can be brutal, and, due to the competitive nature of this game, they do not come off as humorous as in other games. At the rate at which this game has improved recently and with the massive community of stakeholders which it has garnered, SpeedRunners, while still in Beta at the moment of this review, will doubtlessly become one of the flawless go-to's for just about any friendly LAN party and competitive tournament. Each complaint I have for this game is tied to a problem that any early access game would have, and they are no reason to avoid a purchase. Currently an 8 / 10, this game is an easy pick-up and a difficult put-down!

The Good:

An excellent multiplayer experience that hearkens back to the lively days of Nintendo couch co-op playing Super Smash Bros. or Super Mario Kart
Fast and frantic racing-style gameplay that constantly sees twists and turns as far as who is in the lead
Outlandish and colorful characters and maps that really complement the ecclectic nature of the game
Power-ups are an absolute riot with constant changes to the way the player moves through the level
My personal favorite was the grappling hook, which grabs the closest player to you and throws him backwards, hilarity quickly ensuing
Controls are very tight and responsive, which is crucial in a platforming game of this nature
Animation and physics are spot-on and help convey the sense of motion and weight to the characters
Graphics are sharp and vibrant, which are very welcome in a 2D game
Maps are intricately made with what appears to be a pain-staking attention to detail
Turbo generators, swing-able ceiling tiles, lasers, and buzz-saws are a some of the well placed items in a map that can make or break your “speed run”
Current content on this “Early Access” title is more than enough to have a good time with your Steam friends, but the promise of more content updates just sweetens the pot on this game
Active developers that constantly respond and engage their audience in the development of the game
Primarily in the Steam Forums

The Bad:

Numerous bugs and glitches, which certainly supports the idea of it being a “Early Access” title
Some of the bugs encountered were along the lines of no textures loading, a confused camera that can’t catch-up to the race leader, random characters exploding as if losing the race, etc…
While these bugs might sound game-breaking, they often times add to the mania of the game and just make the participants laugh (actual results may vary)
The good times had while playing the game is diminished when playing without friends you know, but that’s not to say it still isn’t fun
Can you play it while the children are awake?:

Absolutely. In fact, I played it with my 7 year old and had a blast!

Did I make time to complete it?:

With a multiplayer-based game, completion isn’t really a question. Did I have a blast playing numerous races with my friends? Yes. Do I foresee myself doing so again in the future? Absolutely.

Redlight or Greenlight?:

A most definite Green light on this one. green

The great times already had with this title make it worth picking up now, bugs and all!

Recommended Purchase Price:

$9.99
