Despre acest joc

Follow the creation of the games Super Meat Boy, Braid and FEZ through this Sundance award-winning feature documentary. Critic’s Pick of the New York Times and declared a “Must See” by Ain’t It Cool News. Watch the full theatrical cut in 1080p HD.

After almost two years of painstaking work, designer Edmund McMillen and programmer Tommy Refenes await the release of their first major game for Xbox, Super Meat Boy—the adventures of a skinless boy in search of his girlfriend, who is made of bandages. At PAX, a major video-game expo, developer Phil Fish unveils his highly anticipated, four-years-in-the-making FEZ. Jonathan Blow considers beginning a new game after creating Braid, one of the highest-rated games of all time.

First-time filmmaking duo Lisanne Pajot and James Swirsky capture the emotional journey of these developers as they sacrifice money, health and sanity to realize their lifelong dreams of sharing their games with the world. Four developers, three games, and one ultimate goal— to express oneself through a video game.

Features:

  • 1080P, full HD video application.
  • ‘Team Meat’ Audio Commentary Track: Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes provide their various insights throughout the film. Hilarious, informative and sometimes outright lies. It’s a great compliment to the film.

This documentary isn't about indie games, it's about 4 developers. If you're looking for some overview of indie development this isn't the film for you: it's an extremely personal look at how creating games can be both intensely damaging and rewarding, and as such, sometimes gets pretty intimate with the subjects of the film.

Overall, an engaging watch that really gave me insight into the lives of those featured.
The price is honestly fairly high, be sure to grab it on sale.

I already immensely enjoy documentaries, but I think this one is perfect. I watch this every time I want to get excited to make a new game or to introduce game development to someone who knows nothing about it. The special edition is worth it if you are already a huge fan of the documentary, but not necessary.

So annoying. The documentary is supposed to be about 3 different indie development companies. It ignores the guy that has experience and no trouble with his game. Focuses mainly on the other two companies. One of which is clearly mentally unstable. Watch it if you want to hear weirdos complain about life for an ungodly amount of time. I couldn't last more than 30 minutes.

Hey, this movie is actually really good as a movie! Inspiring, dramatic, with great camera work, sound and aesthetic choices. Stories of chosen game developers are engaging, nothing feels useless or out of place. It's an absolutely solid, well done documentary. And on our favourite subject - games! What's not to like?
P.S. Bonus content is a nice touch, adding a bit of re-watch value.

Well-crafted and intelligent, this film is an illumination of the agony of creation – the self-doubt, the obsession, the life sacrifices – that are the core, not merely the side-effects of those define themselves through "art."Video-game developers: Geeks, nerds, socially adrift obsessives. Indie Game thankfully gets past such base introductions in a flash and graduates to far more engrossing levels – levels which open up into the real worlds of the best independent game developers working their craft. The movie scores big points by drawing a sharp distinction between corporate vidgame programmers and indies. It makes a compelling case for games as not only clever hand-eye coordination exercises, but also as manifestations of their creators' emotional and philosophical viewpoints. This is a movie about a subculture, made for that subculture. It's a must buy for all indie fans and people interested in game development.

Before you ask "Why is a movie on Steam?!", allow for me to give you an explanation:

Indie Game The Movie is so much more than a movie or a game. It's a tool that allows ANYONE even remotely interested in the gaming industry to gain some powerful insight into the world of programming and creativeness as well as the obstacles that often come with it. What makes this so much more special is that it's all coming from indie developers (indie = independent).

Video games today are becoming arguably less interesting, unique or fun. A prominent example would be the Call of Duty series. Corporations or big companies that are pressuring developers to not take risks, to follow a formula or to indulge in what has been termed "shady game practices". I'm talking about controversial DLC or downloadable content (now associated with small content cut from the main game and sold for a large price afterwards), lack of support after a title's release, paid reviews, and more. Go back roughly 2 decades and there was a time when: developers were always seeking to create unique experiences for all platforms, there was never any hesitation to release free additional expansion packs and the consumer base weren't treated like buffoons and were engaged with directly.

Indie games or indie developers are essentially a revival of that golden age of gaming. It's true, the indie scene have been around even in the early 1990s but due to advancing technology, growing expectations and an increasingly competitive market (consoles, PCs and other gaming platforms) -- small teams have become big teams and these teams have since sought companies that will fund their large projects. Viewed initially by many as a good thing, it's attributed to what the majority now term a "gradual decline in game ingenuity". Indie is the response to that.

So that's what Indie Game The Movie is all about. It showcases what it means to be indie and some of the big names behind the indie rebirth in the late 2000s. Braid; Super Meat Boy; Fez. Video games which are now extremely recognizable but only because of how different they were to what else was being offered to gamers at the time. "Different" comes at a cost though. Risk. The teams behind these 3 video games contained groups as big as 5 people or as small as just 2. Not only was their life sacrificed but money, wellbeing and in most cases, time, that could have been spent looking for a job elsewhere (that wasn't dominated by well-known series and developers).

You will personally see the payoff in making something that's your own and that you can share; despite how impossible it may seem at first or the light at the end of the tunnel appearing dimmer than ever. This is especially true with Fez. Fez took 5 long years and a large chunk is spent on Phil Fish. Sympathy, disappointment and joy is what I felt when I saw the development journey or rather, development hell, of Fez. At the same time, Fish is also tackling the ongoing stigma against video games and hoping to prove it wrong. For example: video games are often viewed as a lower form of entertainment and that they can't express ideas and concepts as well as any other medium.

Incredibly, all 3 indie games later go on to be some of the most critically-acclaimed video games of all time. You may never have heard of them before or never realized that something like Minecraft or Amnesia was made with very little manpower but after this experience: you will hopefully begin to respect and appreciate this great twist in the gaming industry. I've always supported indie games and my expectations are time and time again blown away due to the chances taken by the amazing people behind these typically ambitious projects. Being indie was something that was initially laughed at or not taken as seriously as it should've been, and Indie Game The Movie goes to great lengths to make you believe and feel like you're a part of the indie scene.

That's why Indie Game The Movie is so good. I've never witnessed anything like it before, let alone for something video game-related. It's professionally made, has a great soundtrack and if you buy the Steam version: has tons of extras, additional commentary (from the developers themselves) and a hidden video game! If you do like Indie Game The Movie: buy the DLC "Special Edition DLC". It focuses on more lesser known indies and also follows up the 3 main indie game teams after Indie Game The Movie was finished in production.

TL;DR - If you're even remotely interested in the gaming industry and want to know what it's like to be indie -- get this now!!
Rating: 9.3/10.

if you want some drama and sappy stories of the uninteresting geeks behind the actual indie games, give this movie a shot.

really..why isnt this ♥♥♥♥ about the games? its ♥♥♥♥ing called indie game: the movie not indie developer: the boring melodramatic snorefest.

I was expecting a better/broader documentary like "I Know That Voice" - but what I got instead was an easily dated exposé on 3 manbabies who were promoting how much effort they put into their games in the form of a sap story.

The narratives for Phil Fish and the fat goth who made Meatboy were clean, but didn't have much connection at all to the narrative of Johnathon Blow.

Overall, the scope of this film was too narrow and spent too much time shaping audience perception - just like the media already does.

Very interresting movie, I must say that. It shows you everything, what needs to be showed. Most importat thing is, that indie gamedev is NOT only joyfull and beautifull coding-coffe-fastfood like procedure. It is full of pain, sadness, loneliness... to make a remarkable game requiers pure soul and pure heart.

To be honest, I glamorized the process of making a game. I glamorized it to the very moment of my first game-make attempt. It was 2 months ago, and my 1st game is plain s*it - but it is my game and it is complete. Then I realized, that developing a game hurts like hell, but I thought "Maybe there is something wrong in ME actually." Why am I saing this ? Because this movie makes me realize, that I was wrong. That there was no mistake nor problem with me - developing a game, regardless of its final form, its trully painfull... After all, like all creation processes, where Art comes out.

I have to thank for enlightening me to those guys in this movie. Great games gurus - creators of FEZ, Super Meat Boy and Braid. One day I shall stand in front of you with my own, ultimate game (which I plan to build with my friends) and salute you. One day, I shall thank you in person for what you teached me with this movie. One day... well, we will see, what the future holds.

This movie really isn't worth buying for two reasons. The first reason is that it's overpriced. You can get Netflix for a month for free or for 8.99 and watch it there, and still have the option to watch other movies. The second reason is because half the people in the movie are beyond annoying. Phil Fish basically blames his former partner for all his mistakes and complains about him THE WHOLE MOVIE. The other annoying guy is the developer that maid Braid. I forget his name however he's much like Fish only he acts like he's too deep for anyone because he made an indie game with some hidden meaning.

However the movie isn't all bad thanks to Team Meat acutally being interesting and not acting like pretentious ♥♥♥♥♥♥bags. If you do watch this movie just watch Edmund and Tommy's parts, skip everything else it's not worth your time.

Also to those who would say that I'm being too extreme with my review, don't forget that Phil Fish told someone to kill themselves on Twitter. He then threw a fit, told everyone he's quitting took his money and left his customers with a broken game. I think it's fair to say he's an idiot and he would fit better in a documentary about studying autism and not game development.

I thought it was going to be an informative, behind the scenes look at indie game development. What I got was 94 minutes of crying and ♥♥♥♥♥ing. It shouldn't even be called a documentary. It's a video journal. The worst offender is Phil Fish. I literally thought he was going to break down and cry any time he was on screen. I didn't learn anything from this. I could've gotten more from reading a Wikipedia page.
