"To the Moon, too!" Comic+ DLC released!

Hi all, hope the year's wrapping up well!

We're excited to release this little comic project, "To the Moon, too!":

http://store.steampowered.com/app/418890/

The comic itself is available in its web-sized version on Freebird Games' site for the public, but this package offers the full-sized digital booklet, bonus content, and helps to support the project (that is now completed). c:

It also offers a rebate for more than its cost if any merchandise (To the Moon music boxes, printed comic book) is purchased from https://freebirdgames.bigcartel.com/ (Orders this week should still arrive by the holidays.)

There're more details on the Steam page for it. Cheers, hope y'all enjoy it!

-Kan

P.S. I'm focusing on making Finding Paradise (To the Moon's actual "sequel") now, so new minisodes will be put on hold this Winter.

About This Game

Dr. Rosalene and Dr. Watts have peculiar jobs: They give people another chance to live, all the way from the very beginning... but only in their patients' heads.

Due to the severity of the operation, the new life becomes the last thing the patients remember before drawing their last breath. Thus, the operation is only done to people on their deathbeds, to fulfill what they wish they had done with their lives, but didn’t.

This particular story follows their attempt to fulfill the dream of an elderly man, Johnny. With each step back in time, a new fragment of Johnny's past is revealed. As the two doctors piece together the puzzled events that spanned a life time, they seek to find out just why the frail old man chose his dying wish to be what it is.

And Johnny's last wish is, of course... to go to the moon.

This game is phenomenal. Everything about it surpassed any expectation that I had. I literally bought this game off the description of the game alone. It was an original concept that was used to tell a story in the most fascinating way possible. The story was utterly captivating, as it had me sucked in by the first few minutes all the way until the end. The game has a good sense of humor, but that doesn't overshadow the tragedy of the story.

The characters in the story are as great as the story itself. They were multidimensional characters with rich and unique personalities that unfolded before your eyes. You feel like you really get to know the characters of the story.

There were twists along the way that I never saw coming. The score in the game was nothing short of spectacular as well.

I almost feel like me writing this review doesn't even do it justice. Just play the game. It's one of the greatest stories I've ever had the pleasure to sit through. It is a fantastic and beautifully sad story that had me in tears throughout the ride.

To anyone who ever says that games aren't art, this game is a clear counterexample.

Hey everyone,

So I heard about this game and thought I'd look it up, come to find out that it had an Overwhelmingly Positive standing of about 20k+ reviews. That's pretty incredible. I played it, I enjoyed it, but I think that it's a little overrated. Don't get me wrong now, everyone is different when it comes to emotional stories and games, like this one, but I came to the conclusion that perhaps since I deal in people's emotions on a daily basis as a part of my job, it didn't have that kick that others seem to have gotten from it.

Liked the game, would love to see more from freebird, too. Would certainly ecommend it to anyone that likes games like this. 3.5 out of 5 stars.

To the Moon tells us a wonderfully written, captivating and touching story of life, death and of a very simple - yet the greatest - thing, called: love. The game does this so beautifully that you are guaranteed to cry many times throughout the course of the events. It's the triumph of storytelling that a game built on an ancient japanese rpg engine (first used by Dragon Quest), with text-only dialogue and without any complex puzzles whatsoever can offer such a deep experience. Because contrary what the engine would suggest, To the Moon is an adventure game and could be best compared to a wonderfully good book.

The main concept of the game can be a bit untempting (at least it was for me, even though I do love sci-fi). In the near future people on their deathbeds can order a service with which they can relive their lives in a perfectly ideal way, having artificial memories implanted into their minds. Thus they can pass away peacefully and in happiness. This process requires a specific machine (made by Sigmund Corporation) and skilled technicians who must discover the hidden wish of the patient and fulfill it by taking a different path at certain points of the person's life.

The player takes the role of two such technicians, Dr. Eva Rosalene (Senior memory traversal agent) and Dr. Neil Watts (technician specialist). They both have different personalities: Dr. Rosalene being the more serious one (still she also cracks better jokes) and Dr. Watts being childish (and somewhat subordinated to Dr. Rosalene). They also regulary mock each other.

Strangely enough they aren't the game's main protagonists. but the dying old man, their current patient, Johnny Wyles and the love of his life, River (who has passed away not long ago). Johnny and River were high-school sweethearts and were seemingly made for each other, still, their marriage wasn't as happy as expected. Johnny now lives alone on a cliff near the ocean, with a beautiful view to a lighthouse, with Lily, the housekeeper and her two children. Johnny's dying wish is a journey to the Moon.

The two technicians traverse back through time in Johnny's life via several decisive mementos, that played an important role in his life. With each leap backwards they/we get to know Johnny's life beginning from a few days before to his high school years. In most of these memories, River is also present. When the technicians finally reach Johnny's childhood, they encounter a memory block and therefore unable to travel to the point when Johnny was a small kid. They don't attach great importance to it and begin the installation of his new "memories". However it seems Johnny has absolutley no desire to go to the Moon. At this point Eva and Neil must somehow awaken an interest in him towards the Moon.

Eventually it turns out that due to a childhood trauma and memory loss Johnny forgot that he and River had met as children at a carnival. They shared a common interest towards the stars and immediately became friends. Then they agreed that if one of them were to ever get lost (or to forget about this meeting), they would regroup again on the Moon (also we get an explanation why River is holding onto that platypus plush toy so much...)
Later, after they meet again in high school and then get married, River emotional distance comes from the fact that Johnny couldn't remember their first meeting at the carnival.

The gameplay is very simple: by controlling Eva and Neil the player must explore each memory segment (in the upper section of the screen we can always check which segment of Johnny's life we are in), solve some hidden-picture puzzles and then travel back in time to the next memory. In order to do this however, you'll have to find and unlock mementos by collecting memory orbs. These memory orbs can be acquired by clicking on familiar characters, items, or locations. You can't get stuck, as the solution is often intuitional: for example at the ranch where Johnny and River go horseback riding, you have to catch up with the lively and joyous River and ride alongside her to receive the orbs (this segment contains the loveliest tune in the game by the way: Take Me Anywhere).

Besides Take Me Anywhere the main theme is also amazing as is the rest of the music in the game, always perfectly reflecting the current tone of the given memory segment. These piano themes are fantastic and further facilitate the brilliance of the game.

The ending is lovely but also a bit of a letdown (don't worry, there is a happy ending :)), because it is predictable what Eva is planning to do with River in Johnny's memory. I think it would've been a bit better if it was up to Neil (who actually changes over the course of the story in a positive way) to rearrange Johnny's memory and leave River in the role she deserved to be in.
Still that's only a minor lament from my side and hardly detracts from the game's value. To the Moon points it out how beautiful memories ordinary people can have and is one of those few games that should be played by every single person all around the world.
I'm sure the world could be a better place after that.

PROS
+ superbly written, heartbreaking love story
+ great, loveable characters
+ charming music
+ often sad, often hilarious dialogues
+ some of the sections are so beautiful, they're worth replaying

CONS
- River shouldn't have been removed from Johnny's childhood memory
- Dragonball references

To The Moon is a game about 2 scientists/doctors who help grant the wishes of people on their deathbeds by altering their memories. They respond to a call from the caretaker of a man that wants to go to the moon, and so the scientists travel through his memories in order to alter them. It's very heartwarming and has a lot of depth. I would recommend it to people that love plot, a good soundtrack and science fiction that has to do with technology. It took me a little over five hours to finish it, so there's a good amount of gameplay and things to do.

This is such a great game. I highly recommend it if only for the music alone. The story is absolutely beautiful and words cannot express how much this game can touch you in just a few hours. This game easily gets a 10/10. For such a simple game it does so well and I wish everybody could get the chance to play it.

If a person asked me for a list of the best stories I've ever heard, this game would make that list. I hold this game in the highest regard of the story-driven genre of games, and consider it to have some of the most emotional, shocking, and absolutely heart-wrenching content out there. In fact, I'd go so far to say that if you ever want to enjoy a story-driven game again, consider never playing this game, because it will ruin and raise your expectations for every other game you'll try to play in the genre. Lord knows it happened to me.

And if the story isn't going to be the only thing that sells you, pick it up for the music, the sprite work, the comedy, or even free DLC that expands on the main characters' life outside of what you see in the main story. This game is golden, and will always have a special place in my heart. I hope that you'll let it have a place in your heart as well.

I originally played an unlicensed version of the game, and when I finished, I knew I had to support the developers. They have created one of the most amazing experiences with so few resources. All gameplay mechanics aside, the writing alone is a masterpiece to me. Adding in the music, the atmosphere becomes a complete and immersive experience to offer you a few hours of a heart-felt journey about love, loss, and aspiration.

The sequel to this game is 'A Bird Story' which will then be followed by 'Finding Paradise' which should be released in a few months. I highly recommend the entire series when it's available.

Short story-rich 2D retro adventure with great atmosphere, interesting plot, heartbreaking moments & boring longueurs

What I liked

Deep atmosphere for a 2D adventure
Interesting plot, interesting characters, lovely heartbreaking love story
Decent 2D pixel graphics from the age of Secret of Mana / Chrono Trigger
Short game, perfect for one session the weekend or in the evening after work
100% achievements after first playthrough (around 3,5 hours)

What I didn't like

Unnecessary long dialogues
Street language does not really fit the atmosphere
Humour is not mine
Controls with mouse and keyboard are clunky
Repetitive in the middle of the game
Zero replay-value

Recommended for what it is: a short lovely 2D game.

From the storyline to every detail of graphics of this game, I would say that this is one heck of a game! A great game does not have to have amazing graphics; FreeBird Games proved it through this game. Indeed I understand how this game got of awards for its story, and no wonder there are so many people who are recommending this game to others. This game is a real tear-jerker – but in a good way. It made me reflect about all my wishes and how most of it were forgotten when I got older. Not only was the story well written, but also the music throughout the game was really good. I would say that one of the most memorable items of this game is probably its music because it has this strong emotional content to it that makes the people fall in love with it even though they were not able to play the game. I'm going to be honest now, I thought that this game will be boring at first even though it had an overwhelmingly positive review in Steam, but when I actually played it, I just ate all the words I said. Overall, I would give this game a 10 out of 10. If someone really wants to know why I gave it a perfect score, well, try playing the game. #BestGameEver

This is definitely one of the best games in terms of story and music. Both are beautifully written and exceedingly emotional. All main characters are fully fleshed out and they work perfectly together. Prepare some tissues, though - you will cry - sooner or later (or almost throughout the whole game). I can't tell you more about this game because everything would be a spoiler.

If you had only one game to play in your life this is the one. Don't get put off by the retro/JRPG graphics, even if you aren't into these kind of game you'll enjoy To The Moon.

Please support this game - for all the Rivers out there.

A great story with a bit of sadness (but it also has humor in the appropriate places), cool characters and fantastic music. The only negative point I found is the game controls (I found it uncomfortable to play with mouse, so I recommend using the keyboard instead), but it's dwarfed by the positive aspects. Absolutely worth a playthrough.
