About the Game

Dr. Rosalene and Dr. Watts have peculiar jobs: They give people another chance to live, all the way from the very beginning... but only in their patients' heads.

Due to the severity of the operation, the new life becomes the last thing the patients remember before drawing their last breath. Thus, the operation is only done to people on their deathbeds, to fulfill what they wish they had done with their lives, but didn’t.

This particular story follows their attempt to fulfill the dream of an elderly man, Johnny. With each step back in time, a new fragment of Johnny's past is revealed. As the two doctors piece together the puzzled events that spanned a life time, they seek to find out just why the frail old man chose his dying wish to be what it is.

And Johnny's last wish is, of course... to go to the moon.

To The Moon is definitely an interactive story more than a game, but please don't let that turn you away and cause you to miss out on an amazing experience. This is a story that will hit you, possibly directly, in The Feels™. It takes around four hours total depending on how quickly you move through, but please do yourself a favor and don't rush through. Freebird Games did an excellent job in presenting an emotional story which will keep you glued to your screen.

Pick an evening, sit back, and take the time to enjoy the tale as it unfolds.

Wow.

To be brutally honest, I loaded this game up today thinking that I would just play around for a few minutes and then put it away, unlikely to ever play it again. In reality, from the point the story began to unfold I decided that I wouldn't ... or couldn't stop until it was completed.

It's amazing what Freebird Games managed to do with the RPG Maker tool. With some subtle animations, lighting, and movement, it didn't take long for me to forget the 'low budget' visuals and imagine as the game and story elements unfolded in whatever resolution my mind can create.

I will admit that this isn't what a person could call a gameplay heavy experience. However, the way that the elements are woven into the story are creative and even add to the story. I think as a medium we hurt ourselves by calling our games 'games' at all... however, I was able to complete the journey through my own interaction with enough perceived freedom that I didn't feel corralled into a corner. Mostly the story itself made me want to push to the next story element or conclusion... it was simply that good.

It's sad, really, that a small time developer like Freebird can craft something with such a small budget that is so moving, yet all the big AAA developers can hardly bring me to laugh let alone shed a tear. Speaking of laughter, the pacing of the story is impressive with some comic relief to mix up the joy and sadness. Although I will admit, a few times I thought one of the main characters was a little over-the-top silly... but that may just well be who he is.

When I was in college I took a movie class where the instructor said it was a travesty to ever watch a movie in pieces... and in this case, if you can free up a few hours, I think that this dish is best served in one sitting. Just keep a box of tissue next to your monitor.

[English text written below]

Писать о To the Moon очень трудно.

__________

Every attempt to write something about To the Moon faces the wall of words said by others and makes it so hard to add a word of your own. But trying never hurts, so I'll take my try.

So, what's the game all about? About search. About finding and losing, seeing things filling your soul with warmth and watching them wither and fading away in front of your eyes. About dreams and childish wildest fantasies that seem to be just too unrealistic and unfulfillable to become reality. About moments of poignant choice. About how far you are ready to go for the sake of your loved one. And, of course, about love in general. But do not expect unnecessary lecturing, family values talk or shallow melodrama. The game can make your eyes wet, but not with moments of cuteness overload, puppies or tearing-your-heart-apart episodes, but it's honesty and veracity. The game is straight and sincere what is a rarity nowadays.

When talent and frankness, sensuality and openness leave a mark inside your soul, as if you've just finished reading a good book or saw a wonderful dream... And I haven't yet mentioned an astonishing soundtrack!

It turned out that I can relate to that whole story myself... And part of that mosaic finds it's resemblance inside me. And for some reason... one of the heroes of that fairytale seems so very familiar to me...

This is one of the greatest games I've ever played. If it were a movie To the Moon would be on par with Titanic if not better. Coming from someone who doesn't get emotionally affected easily, believe me when I say if you want a heartfelt and sentimental experience worth every penny, you will want to buy this game. It's on the Humble Indie Bundle X now but you should definitely pay the $10 to buy it on steam. There is a huge amount of detail put into this RPG style game so you can explore every nook and cranny of his life and how it is like. With an amazing storyline and touching soundtrack you will feel like you are the one getting his wish fulfilled. Seriously stop reading this and buy it right now and it'll be the best 10 bucks you ever spent. The question I hope you will be left with at the end is, what does it really mean to be living the dream?
