About This Game

Dr. Rosalene and Dr. Watts have peculiar jobs: They give people another chance to live, all the way from the very beginning... but only in their patients' heads.

Due to the severity of the operation, the new life becomes the last thing the patients remember before drawing their last breath. Thus, the operation is only done to people on their deathbeds, to fulfill what they wish they had done with their lives, but didn’t.

This particular story follows their attempt to fulfill the dream of an elderly man, Johnny. With each step back in time, a new fragment of Johnny's past is revealed. As the two doctors piece together the puzzled events that spanned a life time, they seek to find out just why the frail old man chose his dying wish to be what it is.

And Johnny's last wish is, of course... to go to the moon.

There's a perfect word to describe this game: Masterpiece.
To the Moon is one of the best story-telling games I've ever played.

You can feel the touch of life and death on it. The convincing love story that isn't cliche, the details of a romantic life, well... the true love.
If you love reading books, this is your kind of game. It will make you laugh, cry, be surprised, be shocked, everything..!

Besides a overpass gameplay, it will touch your soul.
I have no more words to say about "To the Moon", let it speaks for itself.

Gifted by a friend, I had no idea what this game was. A wonder! I recommend it without a single doubt.

Basically it is rather something to watch than something to play as it is all about the story. Few actions are required from the player, which most of the time are easy. Make sure to read as it is the core of the game, and give it more than an hour to get into its story.

Pros:
- Excellent storyline. Captivating and pushes the player to have some kind of reflexion about it. Despite the player being quite passive the story will push you to continue if you pay attention to it.
- Soundtrack is superb
- the 16-bit style does it justice - yes I know this sounds weird.
- Text. Suits the game perfectly and - to me - was very pleasant as it gives some room for imagination.
- Those entertaining flipping puzzles

Cons:
- At times I found the controls/mouse precision to be a little bit annoying but it was no big deal tbh.

'To The Moon' is a truly great game that remains memorable long after the final scene fades. An adventure like no other, with an incredibly clever story. A very touching love story. Funny and emotional, sad, witty, smart - what a dramaturgy.
'To the Moon' left tears on my keyboard and a wonderful soundtrack in my ears.

First of all, this is a very informal review. These are my thoughts after taking some time to take everything in.

Alright. I have played a lot of games over the years. Be it on steam, console, mobile devices, anything really. Some for more than 10x the amount of hours I spent on this game. But there is no other title that I've played that deserves a full 10/10 rating. From the story to the soundtrack and everything in between, I absolutely love this game. And much like some of the other reviews, I really can't explain why without spoiling the story. At first, I was a little bit skeptical about getting the game. But the reviews I saw were amazing, and all in all it's only $11 CAD. Let me tell you, if you've got this far into this review and haven't got the game yet, buy it RIGHT NOW. It's so cheap and really is something to remember.

***As a note, if you buy the game, plan on setting aside about 3-4 hours of your day. Once you get into the story, it really consumes you and you wont be wanting to stop till you complete your goal***

Really good story, though I don't think I've come away from a game before feeling this depressed.

Well... had my attention for a full 4 hours. Not sure about its classification as a 'game'. I felt like I'd watched an interactive movie. Would recommend on that basis.

"To The Moon" is a narrative RPG-lite experience with a surprisingly similar premise to 2010 blockbuster "Inception," but with about 100x the emotional range.

The game follows the endeavours of a team of memory-implant technicians, Dr. Watts and Dr. Rosalene, who are trying to fulfil the dying wish of a man named Johnny who wants to go to the moon. Yes, that moon.

It's about much more than that, but I won't spoil the story. The pacing is relaxed but hooks you along, interspersing humorous references and callbacks into the broader sweep of the story. I called it an "RPG-lite" earlier because progression is exploration and puzzle driven, but fairly linear and with no battles to speak of (this does not negatively affect the experience in the least). The soundtrack is majestic, grand, and haunting - which fits the narrative all too well.

Upon finishing "To The Moon" my immediate reaction was "I was not prepared for this. I WAS NOT PREPARED." I absolutely recommend that you allow yourself to be surprised by "To The Moon." It is an excellent game.

So in terms of all of the indie games I've played this one is by far the best. The story and soundtrack are amazing. I can't necessarily write the review about the story because the story is one of those that SHOULDN"T be spoiled until you play the game. The story from the Steam store summary may seem simple, but it is far from simple once you dive into the game. When I bought this game, I thought it was going to be another indie game with a cliche story, but after playing it, I feel that it conveys way more emotions than you would expect first off and leaves the player wondering why developers aren't making stories that focus more on connecting with the player on a personal level, like how the devs at FreeBird managed to pull it off, but with a lot less resources. In the end, when you buy the game, be ready to invest 3 to 4 hours into it, because once the you start playing, the story just draws you in and doesn't let go until the end.

To The Moon is a game like I've never seen before. Although the game mechanics are very simple (some would not even call it a 'game') the story is truly something. It is charming and heartbreaking, very easy to become emotionally attached to. The soundtrack is brilliant and brings more magic to this beautiful story.

...the feels! 10/10

I'm going to start this review by saying that I did like this game, to an extent. What i'm about to say is going to be controversial. Especially to those who love this game more then their own children. So you know, fair warning to those of you with weak hearts. However, I don't think any other kind of review would be realistic. To the Moon has an awesome concept here. A couple of scientist who love the movie Inception create a machine to artificially implant memories into the minds of dying people. A way to fulfill their last wish before they pass. That's nice, right? Sure. I'm into that. What I wasn't into was the lame ♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥ing dialogue that was exchanged between most of the characters. Nothing they said to eachother seemed real, you know? It felt like some poorly written fan-fiction... for Inception. I read the dialogue between characters and couldn't help but think of some crumb-bum anime that only appeals to a select group of brain dead children. All the tongue in cheek jokes. The awkward banter... It just took me out of what could have been a very well written and dramatic tale.

I also didn't buy River as a character. The developer didn't seem to know whether or not they wanted her to be autistic or have alzheimer's disease. Not everybody who has autism is forgetful like she was. People that have alzheimer's are not as doofy as she is. Whatever the developer was going for, they should have done a little more research. She was the centerpiece of the story, and came off as more of a stereotype of these afflictions rather then an actual person with autism or alzheimer's. But whatever, that just goes back to my point of how crappy the dialogue is. Most of it just sucked, period.

However, if you can push past all that like I did, there is a decent little story to enjoy. Beyond that, there is not much else. This is hardly an RPG like some of these other reviewers are suggesting. In fact, it's not. It's super linear and is closer to a Telltale game without combat or choices then anything else. The pixel graphics don't bother me.. The music was fine. There was a good story buried beneath all the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t. It's also a short game. So that's a plus. So could I recommend this game? Geez, I don't know. The only reason I like it at all is because I can appreciate it for what it's trying to be.

I don't believe this game deserves half the praise it's receiving. But it does deserve something. So uh, good job I guess? Do better next time.

Final Verdict: (3 out of 5)

Tried this game due to the overwhelmingly positive rating, but it's definitly not for everyone. The art style is a big turn off for me, there's no gameplay and the story-telling is largely done through text. If you don't know if the game is for you, then it probably isn't.

I can say very little about the game without spoiling it, but I can say that the entire game truly is an experience. The entire story, combined with the gorgeous soundtrack, provides a hauntingly beautiful tale that I thoroughly enjoyed playing.

Keep a box of tissues next to you while playing this game.

It is absolutely beautiful, the story is fantastic, the sprites are well done and the music score is gorgeous.
One of the best story driven indie games out there and a must play. Pick it up if you don't have it just for the experience.

A bit of a slow boil.
But once you get into it, it has it's charm.
You explore the memories of a dying old man in order to fulfill his dream.
There is also a inception side to it, but that is limited to a few clues.

Man, all I read was how good this game was and to not read a lot to not ruin the story. Well I beat the game a few minutes ago and damn who cut the onions!? This game is absolutely fantastic and a perfect example of how video games can emotionally move us, just like a movie.

If you want a game that will remind you of how amazing games can be, that graphics aren't everything and want a story that has substance and thought, get this game!

Now if you'll excuse me I have to see who keeps cutting onions.
