About This Game

Dr. Rosalene and Dr. Watts have peculiar jobs: They give people another chance to live, all the way from the very beginning... but only in their patients' heads.

Due to the severity of the operation, the new life becomes the last thing the patients remember before drawing their last breath. Thus, the operation is only done to people on their deathbeds, to fulfill what they wish they had done with their lives, but didn’t.

This particular story follows their attempt to fulfill the dream of an elderly man, Johnny. With each step back in time, a new fragment of Johnny's past is revealed. As the two doctors piece together the puzzled events that spanned a life time, they seek to find out just why the frail old man chose his dying wish to be what it is.

And Johnny's last wish is, of course... to go to the moon.

I've never played a game with such a well written story.
The amazing story combined with the amazing music exceeded my expectations that I had because of the price and the looks of the game at first.

When I started the game I was still a bit sceptical. I heard that it had a great story and that I needed to brace myself for the feels that where about to come. But the game starts a bit slow. My advice: don't stop at the beginning, push trough and you'll find an amazing game with more feels you will ever be able to handle.

Its also worth to buy the soundtrack (I know youtube is out there with the soundtrack), the developers of this game can't get enough support and the music is so amazing that you just need to have it.

Pros:
+Best story I've ever seen in a game
+Music that fits amazingly well and adds to the story
+Well made pixel art
+Easy controls so you can focus on the story
+Such a low price for such an amazing game
+Great character development Although you go back in time and learn about the past, not the future
+Great environmental use, every place you visit connects to the story

Cons (not really):
-Can be rather short in the eyes of some people (the 2 mini chapters make up for that)
-The start of the game is a bit slow, you really have to push through the start
-There is no option in-game for sound (graphics are not really a problem ^^)

P.s
Bring as much tissues as you can carry.
You can't bring enough.

I like how the story goes, and the ending is so sad.

But the best part is the ending of the second minisode! OMG what's happening? Can't wait for the third minisode XD

The gameplay is fairly simple and straight forward, which I really enjoyed.
I can't get enough of the soundtrack, I love listening to each of the songs and I'd highly recommend downloading them!
A beautiful yet heartbreaking love story, can't get enough of those! Am I right?

I would highly recommend this game to anybody.
Just a heads up to bring a lot of tissues and prepare to board the feels train!

If you're with me, then everything's alright...

Beautiful story. Gameplay is simple, but not really a main factor at all in this game. It felt more like I was playing a narrator role in a short story.

I was very late getting to this game, and the reviews and praise had been out for several years before I got to play. So I was expecting great things, I was expecting to be crushed by the end of the game, I was expecting an amazing soundtrack. I was expecting-- something fun, at least-- out of the gameplay. None of those things were delivered.

Why make a game out of this? Is this the best medium to tell your story? Is your story even worth telling? The premise is that an old man full of regrets effectively wants to cancel his entire life on his deathbed through memory manipulation. He dies with false memories. Would you rather die knowing the truth, or die in a lie, ignorantly blissful? Now thats an interesting question, but it was completely ignored by the game creator who unequivocally sides with the lie.

Its cool that games want to be art. There are not many games that strive to be. But you can't just praise a game because its one of few that tries to be something greater. If this was a book or a movie, if the soundtrack was a standalone CD, if the game was simply a 2D puzzle game without any art, it would be completely criticised in EVERY aspect.

Ultimately this game is a waste of time unless you just want to see where the indie game industry is trying to go. If you're looking for a thoughtful story, beautiful art and music, all wrapped up in an interactive video game, you might be disappointed.

I got this game as a gift from my boyfriend, and when I first started playing it I viewed it as another game. But when I decided to play through it completely with my boyfriend sitting there with me, I had my heart shattered, rebuilt, and then shattered again as I witnessed the most beautiful love story within a game. This is a must have, and when it goes on sale during Steam Sales, I would recommend it highly as a 1st purchase.

I love this game, and there isn't a day that goes by that I haven't stopped thinking about it. 10/10 would have my heart shattered again

I knew To the Moon received a lot of praise, I had it in my library for a long time but never tried it. I finally decided to see what is was about. It started slowly, it didn't catch my interest right away. But I kept playing past the first hour and could not put it away until it was over. I played the whole game in one sitting (4.5 hours), it was truly amazing.

The graphics are not what make this game great, the gameplay is minimalist, very linear as you cannot decide how the story will change, you just walk around and do whatever is required to keep the story unfolding in front of you. But the story is amazing, touching, sad and beautiful, sometimes funny, simply brilliant. It would make an awesome movie, I hope they do it someday. It would without any doubt become the best movie based on a video game ever made.

If you have a heart, you must play this game.

To the moon is a point and click RPG which has a fantastic story and great music. There is no battle system in the game and your entire playthrough (6 hrs average) will be story driven.

The following are my views and feelings about the game after a single playthrough. I will not be discussing the story to avoid giving spoilers but will say that the story, nay, entire playing experience was absolutely wonderful.

Positives:

- The story gets really interesting early on and the experience goes only uphill from there.
- The characters and their dialouges are very well written and unique.
- The game has great flow and pacing.
- The "Time travelling" mechanic, especially solving memento puzzles was fun and added to the story.
- The Music is the strongest point of the game imo. 10/10 if I would rate it.
- The humor is great and jokes are plenty. I mostly had a grin on my face.
- I like how the game was not very difficult which at least made my playthrough enjoyable.
- The game also makes one feel a mix of emotions including feeling weird at times, which was good.
- There were several neat refrences like animorphs books etc.
- The graphics are standard RPG style and the controls are simple/easy.

Negatives:

- I could not play the game on my gaming laptop as it would not run even after following instructions by the developers. I do know that many players have had the same problems which started during the steam summer sale (2016). I played the game on my brother's laptop and it ran most of the time.
- I changed the DEP settings on my laptop but I kept getting "Script is hanging" error and critical errors afterwards.

Final thoughts:

To the Moon is an excellent RPG with a great story and an even greater soundtrack. I had a blast playing the game. I would recommend this game just for the soundtrack alone but luckily it has a touching story and well written characters which makes it a must have if you like RPGs.

9.5/10

Extra:
best joke from the game imo :D
Johnny: What are you reading?
River: ...A book.

Personally I liked this game , but to be honest not for everyone. Read an equal mixture of positive/negative reviews and decide.

PROS
~The story*
~Characters (although most info on the protagonists will be found in the minisodes)
~The art

(*) The story is good , but not great. Fans of the game may say it is "GENIUS" but in my opinion there was no genius plot element or twist, it was a a good and nice story and that`s all.

CONS
~The controls*
~The humor**

(*) The characters` movements feel "slidey" . I think the maps are made on a grid pattern so if you use a keyboard you might stop pressing the key but the character will keep moving to the end block , it creates a "slidey" feeling and puts me kinda off. You can of couse you can use a mouse so it`s up to you , I prefer keyboard and the keyboard didn`t feel right.
(**) The humor feels forced and cringey. Dr.Watts for example constantly makes jokes and puns, I think they are intentionally written bad and cringey but I think it was unnecessary.

I personally suggest you try it, you will probably like it.

To great heights, some lows, and lukewarm destinations.

RPGMaker, we meet again. As a foreword, I have a personal distaste for RPGMaker games, as a lot of the games developed with the engine tend to reuse a lot of stock assets, and To the Moon is no different in that regard. To its credit, it does use a lot of unique assets, but the overall vibe I get from the game is that it would be much better if it was developed on a different platform.

The premise of To the Moon is a simple one. You are tasked with overseeing two doctors with a simple mission - to make a dying man's dream come true. Tragedy, romance, it's all there as you journey back through his memories to make his wish come true. The doctors are the facilitator of this, and they're more like dream technicians. And to be fair, they are the weakest part of the story. The two of them can be typecast as the straight (wo)man and the fool, which is my biggest complaint. Too often they interject their discourse into an intimate moment with no tact or subtlety whatsoever, which often ruins the mood. The rest of the game is incredibly well-written EXCEPT for the people you play as. The dying man's memories are way more interesting than listening to a neurotic's caffeine addiction or his complaints. I'm guessing it's written like so because it's "another hohum job" for them to do and that it's a simulation, but they come off as tactless. Outside of those two knuckleheads, the plot and story as a whole still manages to stay strong. There are also a couple of mini-episodes included with the game, but they're more fluff than anything, designed to give more of an insight to the background technology of the main story.

As much as the visual medium of the game requires it, the RPGMaker graphics are servicable. There are some unique art pieces here and there, but it's acceptable for what it is. But once you've seen those trees and ground textures in one game, you'll see it everywhere else.

Where the game really shines, however, is the soundtrack. The piano-heavy ballads and melodies have that right amount of melancholy and nostalgia to stick with you and make the scenes feel more impactful. When music is absent, the mood turns coarse and heavy. Where the graphics fail, the sound design helps to ease over the lackluster presentation into something more palpable.

With all of those points in mind, the story is rather short and concise as most people can finish it through one sitting. As much as I was looking forward to playing this, I can't help but feel underwhelmed, and not of any fault to anything else but the mystique around it. The game is not perfect, far from it. It has its flaws and moments of heavy-handed writing. Even so, it's not a bad game. It tugs at the heartstrings at the right times and even made me well up at times.

Ultimately, your mileage will vary. Some will cherish it far more than others, who might leave it as a cute story. For the price point it's at, you honestly can't go wrong.

7/10.

Grab a box of tissues and strap yourself in, this game packs a punch...to your eye holes!

The feels are reals in this quick but heavy story-driven gem. Its a game where you sit and play from start to finish while keeping you on the edge of your seat every step of the way. Gameplay mechanics are simple, the music is beautiful, and the puzzles are balanced just enough to keep you interested.
An absolute must play and worth every penny.

Truly beautiful game. Try not to read too much into this game before playing it and just enjoy the experience when you play it. One of my favorite steam games of this decade and I will be sure to look for all of these developers future games.

Engaging, sad, masterful piece of art. I can't say enough about it.

If you think this game looks like its for you, make sure to pick this up. You won't be dissapointed.

A few years ago I played the first 30 minutes of this game, decided I wasn't interested, and put it down. Today I saw it sitting in my steam library and decided to give it another chance, and man I'm really glad I did. This game has a great story. I can't recommend it enough. It's about 3-4 hours long, but it's worth every penny.
