About This Game

Dr. Rosalene and Dr. Watts have peculiar jobs: They give people another chance to live, all the way from the very beginning... but only in their patients' heads.

Due to the severity of the operation, the new life becomes the last thing the patients remember before drawing their last breath. Thus, the operation is only done to people on their deathbeds, to fulfill what they wish they had done with their lives, but didn’t.

This particular story follows their attempt to fulfill the dream of an elderly man, Johnny. With each step back in time, a new fragment of Johnny's past is revealed. As the two doctors piece together the puzzled events that spanned a life time, they seek to find out just why the frail old man chose his dying wish to be what it is.

And Johnny's last wish is, of course... to go to the moon.

I went into this game really, really wanting to like it. I was pretty disappointed by several things but the soundtrack and 3rd act made up for it. Here's the overall breakdown:

Were pretty inconsistent, at times there were some really good sprites (mostly furniture and some trees) but they were mixed in with really bland and flat textures. Outdoor sections suffered from this the worst and you'll most likely get stuck on objects you didn't know are part of the foreground. There are a few times where the artists styles really don't mesh but it doesn't detract too much from the game.

Sound: This is where the game exceeds by far. The writing falls short on conveying the weight of some scenes (I'll get to that later) but the music does all the heavy lifting for this. It's strikes a good balance of being really pretty but not distracting.

Story: The overall story is really good, it's a neat concept but was SEVERELY let down by the writing. Most characters aren't too bad, unfortunately most of the dialogue is from the scientists. There's no nice way of saying it, but their dialogue just gets downright cringey at times. There's forced references to things like Animorphs and Dr Who. one of the scientists uses vegetable names as curse words but then also sometimes uses real curse words, sometimes garbage text (@#$%^) as curses. it's really inconsistent. They try really hard to be funny for painful amounts of time and it just brings the story to a grinding halt. I was afraid/expecting some kind of "Holds up spork" moment but thankfully that never happened. I was on the verge of dropping and forgetting the game but I got through to the last act. I don't know if it was because or in spite of the awful writing and mechanics before but it really got to me and I'm glad I finished it. There's times where it seems like a poor fangame of itself, but the end is a worthy reward.

Controls: DO NOT use a controller. The movement is grid based and the d-pad does not work fluidly for this and it gets really frustrating. There are a lot of places you'll get caught on objects. Mouse is the preferred method but still clunky. The walking speed is also really inconsistent, you're either going aggravatingly slow or a decent run with no apparent reasoning.

Gameplay: The game centers around finding 5 orbs in an area. Usually these are tied to an object with an associated memory but a lot of times you'll just have to wander around until they trigger it at a random spot. Maybe this is supposed to be a subtle way of saying the view/location was the memory but there were a few that weren't near anything of note so I'm not sure. There are a few paths that are blocked until you have X amount of orbs which was a pretty lazy way to handle that. They could have easily just been blocked by a character that won't let you pass until you answer correctly or a door asking for a password. At the end of each area there's a pretty simple picture puzzle involving the key object that seems kind of tacked on just to add gameplay. PS at one point there's a really irritating obstacle course but it makes sense in the story and is completed in only a few minutes.

Overall the game seems like a beta of a really good game. If you still want to play it after all the cons listed here then please do so, it's a short game so you won't have to deal with the negatives for too long and the story itself is really good. Just don't make it a high priority.

This game is a feeler for sure and I was blown away by how good this simple, yet elegant game was! The music was beautiful and I am going to learn To the Moon on the piano when I can! The story was so touching, after playing through it I sat in bed feeling happy and sad at the same time! Definitely would recommend this to a friend!

To The Moon offers a story. At one point it "tricks" you into a fake JRPG sequence in order to make a joke, and while I wouldn't actually have minded a JRPG element in this game, I don't really care either way- so long as the story can compensate for lack in gameplay substance.

Now, I've played visual novels and pixel art games before. I don't dislike To The Moon because it's a linear story with minimal interaction requirements. So far the narrative isn't too bad, although I'm not as engaged as the reviews had me thinking I would be. For me, the most frustrating aspect of this game are the tediums of moving around, back and forth, in order to progress. You'll be placed many times in a certain spot, just so you can walk in an obvious path towards the next scene and repeat. I imagine I'd be far more amused watching the game play itself out and enjoying the story at my leisure rather than having these sequences where I mindlessly move the arrow keys in a brain-numbing fashion. Perhaps you're thinking that's not enough to warrant a negative review, but I'm not actually engaged enough with the story to sit through tediums such as this. So far I'm not committed to the characters, and I'm finding it a bit difficult to believe the protagonists wife would ask him to commit the rest of his dying days into looking after the lighthouse. When she says "do you know what makes me happy?" I was hoping part of it would be seeing her husband happy even after she's gone. Maybe these scenarios willl make more sense as certain plot developments unfold, however I'm finding it a real struggle to get there.

Other than the above, my only gripes are with the puzzles and controls. A simple 'flip the tiles' sequence gives you breaks from reading characters' speech bubbles, however it seems a bit too easy to click away until the puzzle all but solves itself. You can try to complete them in an 'ideal' number of steps, however I didn't see the point in trying (other than the small reward of personal achievement). To add a final nitpick, the controls aren't entirely smooth and I find myself bumping into things quite often. You sort of have to release one key entirely before pushing the next in order to get a fluid rythm going.

The story is okay, the music is rather nice and it looks fine. Even considering my feedback, that may be enough for you. Unfortunately this is one case where my opinion sways from the majority, and I accept that, but I still feel the need to provide it honestly.

Great looking pixel art and one the best stories I've ever experienced through any medium. While gameplay is fairly simple and has little challenge, the real pull here is the story and memorable characters. I highly recommend this to anyone who just wants to sit down and experience a beautiful tale about a man and the people who seek to fullfil his dying wish.

To the Moon is barely a game in that it has very superficial and often times clunky gameplay and controls. (The only real point to the gameplay is to make it so the entire narritive is not given out in cut scenes and to get the player to explore their enviorment). However it is one of the most touching and heartwarming stories I've played in a "game" and I recomend it to anyone who wants to feel emotionally moved or consume a wonderful story.

Overall, buy this game if you want a narritive experience because it offers very little gameplay department (The narritive is worth pushing through the actual gameplay). And I enjoyed most every moment of my playthrough.

Beautiful and Sad. It made me cry in first hour itself. It is worth every bit for the story.

Finished it in one sitting. It will leave you speechless and with tears. One of the most touching stories of all time.

Amazing game. Halfway through I was thinking "hmm this is a really good game" but then the second half hit me like a semi truck and the tears started coming and wouldnt stop. I cant even listen to the soundtrack....too much happy sad tears. BUY IT! PLAY IT!

I completed the game in roughly 6 hours. But those hours were fantastic!

It opens like your typical RPG. Overhead 2D gameplay. Your main objective is to really just follow along the story...and there are a few panel based puzzles. but not too many. This is a game that's absolutely impossible to put down once you get into it just a little bit, as the music is outstanding...and the story is very well made!! Unfortunately, The only big surprise I got out of this game was the suprise that I wasn't going to be surprised...in otherwords...with how amazing the game has let me on...I expected the wrong ending. Either way. It was great. and worth a great deal of money, and then some.

It makes me wish I had a machine to re-visit my memories...oh golly.

I payed a mere $1.99 whilst it was on sale, what a steal.

I would be very happy to pay full price for this masterpiece, everything about it was sublime. The not so subtle TV show references when breaking a memento, the world design, the game mechanics... I'm not going to comment on the story that was told as I don't wish to potentially spoil anything, suffice it to say it will make you cry MANLY tears. The soundtrack is one of the few soundtracks I have even thought of purchasing in my lifetime; it was beautiful.

I've played this through once, and I certainly will be again. Not to mention the DLC is free!

This is without a shadow of a doubt one of the most well executed games I have played and will every play. Hats off to Freebird Games for giving us this piece of art. I'll be giving A Bird Story a go and if it's even half as good as this was I'll be over the moon *unintentional pun I swear*

I cannot recommend this enough, buy it and steam share your library to your friends if they do not wish to purchase it; it's a must play.

I really tried to like this game; I had heard nothing but praise towards this for years so finally this sale I decided it was time to get it but I really just did not like it at all. So here is why:

First lets start with the surface level reasons, the stuff that hurts enjoyment but could be looked over by those who enjoy it:
Controls: The controls are just plain bad, if you use the keyboard the map is designed in a grid (as in 1 press up goes one block) however the actual design of the area does not make this clear, causing keyboard controls to feel floaty, as if when you let go of the button the character will continue moving until they reach the next grid block. The mouse controls a little better with characters auto moving to where you click, but when switching surfaces or rooms they will randomly stop despite having more to move towards; overall it just controls poorly.
Art Style: I know this one is just an opinion and I'm sure many will disagree but I just really don't like the art style; I can't really put a finger on why but it just rubs me the wrong way.

So now for the more pressing reasons why I don't like this:
Dialogue: This game isn't funny; the character's say cutesy jokes and puns so so often (especially Dr. Watts) but they just arent funny, I cringed through so much of it. Overtime these characters progress and make jokes less often but it just feels like a blatantly obvious way of showing chracter progression, take a bland character and make them say jokes then stop saying jokes and it will make it feel like they differed greatly.
Emotion: All of the big emotional moments felt pointlessly manipulative; often having important bits of information or character motivation hidden simply for a twist later.
Theme: I also disagree with the point the game tries to push about manipulating the past to be happy but I wont go into detail because spoilers.
Ludonarrative Dissonance: The primary gameplay mechanic is finding these glowing orbs to go deeper into memories, but how does wandering around looking for glowing orbs relate to the themes of manipulating the past or memories what so ever? These things are completely arbitrary, if there aren't enough inspectable objects in the room to attach orbs to the game will literally just give you them for walking around.

Overall I really disliked this game, I really wanted to like it, and I have heard nothing but positive regard from others but I just cannot see why. And it isn't just a matter of me not usually playing this sort of game, all of my favorite games are the artsy slow type that your 'average gamer' would hate (Her Story, Gone Home, Pathologic, etc) but this just did not click with me.

Sometimes all a narrative game needs is a good story and you can forgive the faults. However, To The Moon has everything going against it despite having a very unique and interesting story.

The dialogue is quite bad. At some times cringeworthy, and other times just missing the mark on a joke/reference. It feels as if the author knew the destination for their story, but didn't put enough effort into how the characters would get there.

The music does all the heavy lifting. Due to the terrible dialogue, the game relies on the amazing soundtrack to carry you through the story beats. This is the biggest strength of this game because the music completely nails every setpiece. I'm confident if they removed every line of dialogue from this game, used only emotes and sprite work, this would be a knockout.

The controls are frustrating. Since you are really just walking around in this game, easily moving your character around should be a top priority. However, your character advances too many steps in a button press, leaving you to run into many walls because you overshot.

A very unique story dragged down from the sum of its faults.

To the Moon is a story-focused game that even I enjoyed thoroughly. I have never been a major fan of games that are designed with pixel graphics, especially of the indie variety, but the story is just that beautiful I liked it.

Because of its story being practically the only real component of this game, I don't want to reveal or spoil too much. The game revolves around two scientists of the Sigmund Corporation, a company that can send people through a patient's memories to artificially change one's perceived past. The scientists, Dr. Eva Rosalene and Dr. Neil Watts are very interesting characters throughout the game and interact very differently at different times of the game. I would go as far as saying this is like a video game adaptation of a creative short story.

Generally speaking the game is very simple. There is only a few buttons: movement and "use" for interacting with items.

Obligatory Score: 10/10. Absolutely worth playing, it goes on sale quite often.

Edit: Music is really good too.

Pros: Well written and heart-touching story.

Cons: Chose the wrong media to tell its story. Rent this film instead: "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" by Michel Gondry; it's shorter, cheaper and I would say that has more interaction than this "vg".
