I have to say Warlock:2 is pretty damned good.
At first I thought it was just a Civ5 fantasy clone, and the story seemed ripped right out of Eador:Masters of the Broken world.
But this is a fun strategy game with some interesting elements that make it worth playing.
Warlock 1 & 2 are both good games.
I'm not sure why they have gotten mediocre reviews.
If your a fan of this genre or turnbased hex games I can easily recommend it.
The gameplay is very good, the games pace and difficulty ramp as you progress.
There are many units and spells in the game, they are varied and diverse. The game also has RPG elements for hero units that allows you to upgrade and equip them .
The game has a strong combat system and a good damage model(units have resistances, that can be countered based on different units strengths, buffs, weaknesses)
Terrain also plays a very interesting part in the game, hexes can have positive, or negative properties which have effects on building construction, and combat play.
Also the landscape can be changed and transformed through magic, and can be manipulated in a variety of ways.
The map changes wildly over the course of the game and I really liked how it effected gameplay.
A well made turnbased strategy game
+ stable, simple ui,
+lots of spells/units/heroes,
+funny sound effects, amusing Princess Bride like humor fits the style of the game
+interesting game mechanics.
