Much darker and shorter (about 4 hours) than the previous games by Pendulo studios, but it's worth it. A good story, memorable characters, logical puzzles, nice music and pretty visuals. What else to want from an adventure game?

And not to spoil anything, but I belive fans of Broken Sword will like Yesterday.

Yesterday goes on an unexpected direction

What an odd little game that doesn't let its Dark Story set up the tone for the entire experience
Yesterday does a good job at getting you hooked right after the end of the first chapter, but gives you the wrong idea of what to expect from it
The amount of "cheese" mixed with a story revolving around a satanic cult set in an extremely colorful cartoony world, with its fair share of silly dialogue, does make for a weird little game

The Art Style looks fairly good, despite not fitting with this particular theme. The only exception being the character close ups, where the awkward mouth movements become more noticeable.

The Gameplay is, for the most part, not as cryptic as the classic point n click games, but it does require you to explore, figure out things on your own and do some puzzle solving. While most Puzzles only require simple logic, there is one in particular that requires a specific skill.

Pros:
  • Beautiful game
  • Dark and Gritty Story
  • A good range of different puzzles
  • Well developed characters
  • Good villain

Cons:
  • Dialogue
  • voice acting
  • Sometimes awkward animation
  • Short
  • dull music
  • Bland hero

Score:6/10

What I Didn't Like:

  1. You have no idea what half of the dialogue options will result in. Especially at the end. That and I'm not a fan of the "picture collage" approach to cutscenes. These things are not big issues but it annoyed me a little.

  2. The individual scenes are basically hidden object oriented. The items don't highlight when you move the mouse over so it gets irritating. You end up using the "show the stuff" button way too often and because it only blinks for a second you need to use it several times to see where all the usable items are on the map and the button has a delay!

  3. The puzzles were a bit too straight forward for my taste.

What I Liked:

  1. The character sort of teleports from one item to the other so you don't have so watch him walk from one corner of the room to the other. At first it was distracting but I got used to it and I think it's a great feature that cuts out the most tedious aspect of this genre.

  2. Has a great built-in hint system that removes any frustration when you get stuck.

  3. The story won me over eventually. Took a while though. However, being the most important part of games like these it counts the most.

In the end, even though the story was mediocre at first, about halfway through it gets a lot more interesting. Enough to earn a thumbs up. Despite comming off as trying too much at times and some characters being over the top, I still enjoyed it.

P.S.: Get it on a sale because it's only about 4 hours long.

Loved the Runaway games but this here is not good.

Pros:
Hard Puzzles
Hot spot indicator(shows clickable places on the screen)
Art Style

Cons:
Story
Short game
Logical solutions to puzzles aren't the right choice(ever)

An excellent little piece of mystery and intrigue. I really liked the graphic style of the game, crisp cartoon mixed with some highly detailed background landscapes. Cutscene dialogues had an excellent style to them as well. Never too frustrated with being stuck at a puzzle, but then never the huge satifaction when you solve them. Plot didn't completely tie up all the way through, and good moments of humour throughout.
