What can be said about Red Faction II? The original Red Faction was quite a success (in terms of quite positive reviews and sales) so a sequel was eventually determined to come out soon. Originally a console game and later ported to the PC, it tries to outmatch its predecessor with more action, more vehicles and with a definitely more stupid storyline. What's the final result?

Of course it's not as good or original as Red Faction I. The charm of sneaking around in a Mars colony is nowhere to be found anymore (there's really no link to the story of the first game), the gameplay got definitely dumbed down and the level design is extremely linear. To make it worse, you can no longer make use of the legendary GEO MOD engine as in Red Faction I. You are partly able to blow out some walls or pillars, but that's all. GEO MOD my ♥♥♥.

Nonetheless I must admit that riding vehicles or blowing away enemies with your yellow grenade launcher can be quite fun. The focus definitely lies on action and that's not necessarily a bad thing. On the other side the cons really let you down after all.

The Good:
+ Non-Stop action
+ Many vehicles
+ Many weapons
+ A not so bad second half of the game

The Bad:
- Dumb, repetitive gameplay
- Linear level design
- Boring, foreseeable story
- A horrible first half of the game
- No real replay value
- No real multiplayer available, only a bot mode

The Ugly:
-- Non-skippable ingame cutscenes (I HATE that, seriously)

It's really hard to recommend this game in retrospective. It's an ugly console child with a horrible first half and a more interesting second part. If you still decide to buy it, at least do so during sales or via the Red Faction Collection.

Hands on... WTF IS THIS?!??!??

This is nothing like the first Red Fanction game.
Good goddess I personally couldn't even play more than a few hours of this atrocity.

This ladies and gents is the poorest act of example of how some developers try their best to suck a fandoms pockets dry by making a hell of a stupid, lazyly done sequel from an awesome game.
Grossly linear, stupid story line, game play that feels like a chore, an engine that feels nothing like the GEO-MOD engine the first game was built on, unskipable cutscenes, little to no destructive environments , no enjoyable physics, and complete lack of reasoning for anything that is happening since the beginning of this game.

For the most people who know me here, I hardly drop a game without finishing it no matter how bad it looks.
But this; this is a pure excetion, and a sign with huge letters begging you to save your time and money.
Complete total disappointment, and to think that people once payed full price for this.

Even in a special offer, even if it's like 50 cents. Save those 50 cents for something else. I'm not kidding. I love having complete collections of games, but I would gladly not even care buying this if I knew what I was getting into.

Unless you wanna have your brain fried and your heart torn of, broken to pieces and have each piece stabbed before dipped in lemon and alcohol and light on fire,

DO NO BUY THIS GAME. D:<

If you loved the first Red Faction, I can't recommend this game.
There's nothing here that reminds me of the first game, starting with this game being set on Earth. If anything, this plays like an Unreal Tournament with a story to match, which isn't bad per se, but I expected a continuation of the previous game.

Just skip this one.

It's alright. Definitely doesn't stack up to the original. It does alright as a shooter but if you're planning on playing through the whole series you can probably skip this one and just look the story up online.

A poor excuse for a sequel with none of the inovation that made its predacessor known. Play RF1 or Guerrilla instead.

Easily the worst game in the Red Faction series, and a lazy console port to boot. The menu system is hell to navigate, and no quicksave means if you quit you'll have to sift through a dozen screens to get back to where you were. The story is 100% cliche and has nothing to do with the first game. Even the graphics are worse!

It is also unforgiveably brief. After a few boring establishing levels rife with uninspired rail-shooting, you get to drive a mech for the first time. After strapping in to this supposed "death machine", you emerge from a garage into a small alley with an invincible enemy attack vehicle blocking one exit and an impassable cement wall blocking the other. There is no way to destroy this vehicle or exit this alley whatsoever, so I have to assume it is the end of the game. You just flail around wildly while your health is whittled down to zero. This occurs about two hours in, and is either the result of lazy development, or an ingenius message about the futility of war.

Avoid like the plague. Play the enormously fun Armageddon instead if you are in the mood for a sequel that strays from the RF mythos while appropriately paying homage to it.

Man, i don't know. I have mixed feelings about recommend this or not. Let's start the Review:

Red Faction 2 when compared to its predecessor, is a disappointment. Despite maintaining certain foundations established in the first part, mainly due to technical issues.

PROS :

- LOTS of weapons (with primary and secondary shot system for each one as in the first part).
- The shooting mechanics makes some intense gunfights fun.
- Sections where you drive vehicles are well made and are quite fun.
- Apart from the primary mission objectives, the game have hidden secondary objectives for each map, which when completed, will give you bonus points.
- Karma system that varies the ending of the game (Accomplish the primary and secondary objectives provides you of good Karma, while doing bad actions like killing innocent civilians, will give you bad Karma).

CONS :

- Generic story.
- Easily forgettable characters.
- Clearly this is a PS2 port (You can easily notice it viewing the avaliable options, not to mention the graphics).
- Enemies and allies IA is doubtful.
- There are sections where enemies respawn infinitely until you pass a certain point.
- Exploration of the maps is practically non-existent (compared to the first game).
- The Geo-Mod technology is implemented despite being not quite exploited.
- Ridiculously short (the campaing last 5-6 hours).

If you can get past the fact that this is a direct port of a PS2 game, and you value the game for what it is (a short, mindless, linear first person shooter focused only in killing whatever you have in front) you may like it, if you want something deeper, you won't find it here.

My Score: 5.8/10

Note: Played it on Windows XP - SP3

Pros
-Better quest tracking compared to the first one
-Dual wield weapons
-Fun cheats

Cons
-Short
-Bad story
-No checkpoint and the manual save does not save where you are in a level, only which level you reached so if you are far into a level and you die/want to quit, you will have to restart from the beginning of the level.

Neutral
-Jason Statham is one of the voice actors in the game.

Overall not as good as the first Red Faction. Don't go into it expecting the same style of game, the only thing it has in common with the first one are the nano cells and the name "Red Faction".

The Final Boss:
[no spoiler] If I were to give one reason to play this game, it would be to challenge your gamer skills against the final boss (easy mode doesn't count!) HOLY COW BALLS, RFII has one of the hardest final bosses I have ever played against. Palms sweaty, pants full of spaghetti, and mom crying in the bathroom, I will never forget that day I had to face one of the toughest opponents in gaming history.

Other than that, this game is mediocre, probably worth it if it goes on sale for under $5.

7/10 its good but not as good as the first.

the transition between this game and the first is almost exactly like the transition between F.E.A.R. and F.E.A.R. 2.
for those who havent played F.E.A.R. what i mean is the first one felt immersive and second one felt like a mindless
run and gun game (not to say run and gun games aren't fun but immersive is better). Anyways bottom line is if your
a fan of retro shooters similar to doom, quake, wolfenstein ect. and are pressed on time (took me less than 10 hours
to beat it on easy) than i highly recommend this game.

The first part is much better in terms of gameplay, and considering how many bugs in the 2nd game of the series, it's just awful!
It's a real bad console port, it's very tedious to play, and most of the time you're so frustrated by the awkard things that just kept happening while playing. I had to reload way too many times. When I need to reload becouse I died in a game, thats fine, I just try to refine my strategy, but when I need to reload becouse the game is acting up, thats just bad.

This isn't very good.

I have no idea how it relates to the first Red Faction. You're not on Mars, you're not the Parker guy from the first one, there's no mining company. The graphics are somehow worse than the first one. The story is dumb, the characters are dumb.

Oh well, it's still kind of fun to blow stuff up.

A brilliant game that I enjoyed all the time since it came out. To me it seems to have more character interaction and more music along the lines in comparisson to the first Red Faction.

If you enjoy sci-fi, science fiction or even anything remotely gothic, you should find this interesting as the locations distinctly showcase Churches, graveyards, abandoned metro's and also loud factoris that go down in a very classy fashion.

This is my type of action.

The sequence involving the last boss is fun in the best corny action movie kind of way. Other than that this game is a waste of time that is in every way worse than the first game. Vehicle sections are rail shooting, controls are clunky, and somehow it manages to look worse than its predecessor.

Red Faction II is not worthy of it's title.

The story is not in any visible way related to the rest of the Red Faction series, so if you don't play, you're not missing anything.

The gameplay seems much more oriented to just destroying and killing enemies without purpose, compared to the first game where there is clear direction, and where stealth may be a key tactic.

The control system works well with a keyboard/mouse setup.

The graphics, somehow, seem worse than in the original game, even though it was made later. Things seem more blocky, as well.

The voicing in this game seems to make use mostly of generic "shoot-em-up" lines, and isn't very interesting. This is slightly redeemed by the fact that Jason Statham voice acts in this.

The installation works fine on windows 8.1, no issues as compared to the first game. Check the forums for a guide if you do have issues, though.

Don't buy this game. It doesn't play a part in the wider Red Faction story, and it's poorly made.

Wow. This game is terrible. Definitely has switched it's influences from half-life to Halo, and not for the better. The textures in this game are much worse than the original, and the plot/voice are campy and rediculous. One interesting note here is that Jason Statham was the voice actor for one of the characters, and all the time playing I kept thinking to myself that the transporter was going to bust in here and ♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥ up.

The first game in the series is so much better in everyway. This game feels like a completely different game with the same name slapped on top of it.

Not to mention (really valve/steam?) that I had to dig around on the interet to find a patch for the game so I could play on current hardware (the steam distribution only allows for up to 8 meg video cards).
