I didn't play this game back in the day but I purchased due to the very possitive opinions and low price. So basically I had no prejudice when I started playing it.
Graphics look old, but the same thing happens with Half Life, which is from the same period of time. So this should be no concern.
Gameplay is fun but hard, specially by the end of the game and even in medium difficulty. Basically you have to quicksave everytime you kill someone, or a bunch of enemies. And that's the trick. The end of the game is not specially good either, but does the job.
The story is fine. It's not one of the strong points of the game, but it does have a story that makes what you're doing meaningful. You dont see this in Call of Duty, for example.
Finally a little complanit. You cannot shoot throug the walls. And you cannot see through the walls. I don't care if you are a human or a bot. That simply should not happen. And it happens quite a lot in this game.

Okay so I have a problem here. I don't understand why I enjoyed this game. I had to go through so much ****.

(note: I played on medium difficulty)

  • I had to reload a save and lose half an hour of progress because a submarine exploded itself before landing in water.

  • I had to jump around crates hoping there were items to refill my ammo and health because they were invisible and I had to guess where they were.

  • I had to deal with a boss I couldn't really dodge, just hop around like an idiot hoping the seeking magic missile didn't hit me (also sometimes it just passed through walls) because it kills in two hits, bypassing armor.

  • I had to reload an older save (again) because I had a detonator in hand while having my weapons removed, which left me locked on the detonator and unable to switch weapons when I got new ones.

  • I had to kill 4 flying vehicles (equipped with machineguns and rocket launchers) and a good dozen of enemies (some equipped with large area of effect explosions rocket launchers) at 5 health without any health or armor refill. Then I got one +25 health medpack and had to kill 2 more vehicles and a boss (that could one hit kill me, too).

  • Sometimes, some of the sound just stopped. No footsteps, most gunshots quiet, no music. I had to save and restart the game to fix it. It happened only a few times.

On top of that, there are enemies that can kill you in one hit even at full health/armor and that can shoot through walls or instantly around corners. And there aren't only a few of them.
And, last little note, the land vehicles feel atrocious to drive. But that's minor.

But somehow I still had fun. The combat was satisfying (except what I mentioned earlier). The fact that enemies can kinda strafe at lightspeed feels a bit cheap but it adds some challenge.

Weapons are okay, some just feel useless though. Mostly the SMG, because it uses pistol and assault rifle ammo, but the pistol is way more accurate and the assault rifle is more accurate too and has burst and auto firing. You also get the assault rifle before the SMG. Grenades were just extremely uneffective. I didn't really use explosives on enemies overall, just sniped people with the pistol, precision rifle or sniper, which was just about as effective, if not more. Also, note on the railgun: you can aim through walls with it, apparently... but I only learned that after I finished the game. Because someone told me. I didn't notice it myself at all and nobody tells you about it.

Vehicle sections... well, not remarkable. They're done in 5 minutes, you get back to the interesting part and forget about them. But atleast they're not really annoying.

The geomod destruction is impressive for a 2001 game... But in practice it just felt useless to me. Maybe I just didn't think about using it sometimes but it didn't feel like I really had time to set up explosions to destroy a building or bridge instead of just shooting the enemies. Only used it a few times, twice because I was forced to do it, a couple times out of curiosity to access other paths (which really wasn't rewarding, only unlocked shortcuts instead of secret items, and since I didn't want to miss on anything I went back to the main path anyway).

The stealth parts were really basic. I just had to not get too close to cameras and guards, and spotting distances were really small so it felt pretty easy once I got the hang of it. And they also just end into more shooting, they can't be finished without just starting to shoot your way through some rooms, as far as I noticed. But since you can't get armor and only have a pistol during these, you pretty much have to try getting as far as you can without having to shoot (or get spotted anyway, which is almost the same). You can hide bodies but I really couldn't find any use for it because when I shot any guard it just directly triggered an alarm.
Still, the stealth parts were kind of nice.

Oh, and also, the game is manual-saving only. No checkpoints or autosaving. Force yourself to quicksave (and sometimes do a manual save in the menu just in case something bad happened) or else you're gonna have to go back to the start everytime you die. And if you don't save often you're just gonna have a way harder time overall.

So, overall, I'm still not sure how I had fun with this game, so I'm recommending it hoping you will have fun too, but be ready for some annoying parts.

while steam may not show i have many hours in this game i have owned it since its initial release, all together i have a few hundred to a thousand hours playing this in single player or on maps i made myself,

pros - fun, fast paced, good story, decent weapon selections and for its age the graphics are great.
cons - most of the enemies look about the same if theyre the same general class, multiplayer servers are now either filled with the hardest of the hardcore only, or cheaters.

all in all this is one of my favorite games of all time, who doesnt like being able to destroy the majority of the terrain/buildings etc around them?

pros :

- satisfying gunplay
- good variety - levels, weapons, enemies and vehicles
- semi open, extensive maps
- story gives some background, you re not gonna care much but its still decent

cons :

- gamebreaking bugs, sometimes you can get stuck in terrain permanently
- no checkpoints or autosaves ( save often ! ), restart puts you in the beginning of the game
- unskippable cutscenes - infuriating at times
- when you tab out of the game it makes your system freak out, had to restart my pc because of it a couple times

I completed the game in 5 hours which is a little short but it still felt rewarding, there is simply a lot of content to experience in this amount of time so in the end it's worthwile and satisfying. 8/10.

Though graphics is too old, still enjoyed every pixel of the game.

Pros:
> challenging AI
> lots of variety weapons
> good rebellion story

Cons:

> outdated graphics (what do you expect from a 2001 game?)
> may encounter some bugs (just switch back to previous checkpoint)

10/10 would rebel again on mars.

I got tired of gaming in my late teens, sold my stuff and moved on. Few years later I picked up a PS2 for pennies and a friend gave me this game for christmas. It blew me away and rekindled my love of gaming. It's been over a decade and I still hold this in as high regard today. It lived in the shadow of Half-Life which is an injustice to how good this game is.

Red Faction is a series that I originally started playing on the Playstation 2. I fell in love with the story of miners on Mars, rising up against thier corporate overlords and towards a peaceful and free Mars society.

Genre: FPS

Story: Miners rise up against corporate overlords and you're their only hope.

Story length : 10-12 hours, more if you mess with Geo tech.

Multiplayer: KIA

Pros; Beginning story starts off fast and intresting. Geography destruction is cool and can lead to some cool goodies. Guns pack a punch and usually have a secondary use, alot like the Half Life series weapons. Can run on almost anything.

Cons: Stealth sections are horrendous. Some mission objectives can be very unclear. Ally and enemy AI are lackluster, to say the least. Graphics aren't the best, but detract hardly at all from the overall expirence. Lack of enemy of variety.

Overall, a very fun a cheap game (price wise) that doesn't destroy your PC in the performance department and is mostly a title to play to say that you've played it and get to expirence the awesome, though limited use of, Geo tech.

A few years ago, I would have said to you: Red Faction? No way! And you would have probably told me: You never played it. Well, for once, you're wrong. Back then, I did try to play Red Faction. The problem is that I was already lost after a few seconds and my younger self didn't like open-world or games with multiple paths. And on a sale, months ago, I bought the four Red Faction games.

Red Faction puts you in the shoes of a Martian miner, oppressed by the Ultor Corporation (who is also doing illegal stuff). One day, a guard triggers a riot in the mines and Parker (it's you), to survive, takes a weapon and begins to find his way while shooting the enemies. He knows about Red Faction, a rebellious group fighting Ultor. He becomes that day one of them and a hero. But Parker uncovers also nasty secrets...

While the plot is basically common (the corporation doing illegal research and oppressing its employees), it's still interesting to see where it leads. To my big regret, I didn't really understand it. One moment, you're told about the plague, another one, it's about nanotechnology and the final one, it's about mercs. Anyway, the universe that was set seemed to have evolved into something more coherent but the fact is that the game isn't really answering some questions: Who is Eos? What's Masako background? And why are the guards so cruel? What about Parker? How come the Red Faction managed to infiltrate the Merc base? See, many questions, no answers.

I know the gameplay: shoot, lock and load. But I must say that I really appreciate the passages where you can take control of a vehicle: submarine, helicopter, jeep, etc.. It was refreshing back then. Not even Half-Life had that diversity. Besides, when you consider the weapons, while they're the usual ones (rifles, pistols), some of them are just great to use... Too bad they arrived way late in the game. But still they're there. My only concern is the overpowered Merc. They can kill you quickly and sometimes, you don't know from where they're coming from, they're spawning endlessly (and you can see it actually). But put a Merc with a Railgun and you're dead immediately. Game over. Well, it's fair because if you use the weapon, it's the same result but sometimes, you're wondering how they can touch you when you're hidden. Or when the door is just opening. Also, the end of the game is pretty hard: so many enemies, so few health packs. Its result was that I was with 5 HP knowing that I had a Merc with a Fusion Rocket Launcher after the corner and that I couldn't run far enough before the explosion. I managed to survive. But after I don't know how many tries.

And when I said that I was lost, it's true. I was often wondering what to do. I mean, I didn't have an objective put somewhere and given the Geo-Mod engine that will let you create your own path by destroying walls or floors, you can ask yourself where to go. And the developers made sure to make hesitate about the right way. For example, during your first stealth mission, Hendricks is only telling after a few minutes that you need to go on the third floor. So, the time I've wasted checking every office was frustrating me. And I didn't know where to go as some doors were guarded. That's an example of objectives not being precise enough.

I can't really complain about the graphics: after all, the game was done at the end of the 90'. When you see graphics now, it's logic to think that they're ugly. However, I find them pretty good for the time. A little too brown for my taste but it's due to the time that the character spend in the underground, mines or other canyons. I really enjoyed the lab and the space station and part of the Merc base. What was also good was the fact that you could destroy nearly everything on your screen and kinda make your own path. It's something I didn't do apart if it was part of the story, because well, let's be honest: I'm not into explosive stuffs.

Another good thing is the soundtrack. It's suiting the game well. And the voice acting of Hendricks and Eos is good. Parker, though, sounded like a spoiled angry kid. And there is something that may contributed to my confusion and my misunderstanding of the story: sometimes, sound (voice and music) weren't playing and dialogues in the cut scenes weren't in sync. I don't know if it's a problem of old game - new computer or if it was already the case back then.

Anyway, I don't know if I should play it again or not. Yeah, there are several levels of difficulty. But given my experience at the end of the game, I don't know if I would able to do harder than I did.

Red Faction was also a game including multiplayer. I didn't try it, so I can't say anything about it. But I suppose that it was involving Red Faction and Ultor and that the Geo-Mod Engine played its part in it.

And this is it. I can't say much more about that game. What is staying is that you should at least try it. Get over the graphics, get over the weird plot and enjoy the experience. After all, who doesn't want to be the hero of a revolution?

PS: yeah, I published that first on another site and forgot to paste it here.

Finally beat the game, felt like I was playing it forever, and though it might never end, but these bosses on this game are Hard ****, they don't play nice like any boss I seen, one to four hits and your dead just like that in matter of seconds. Over all I enjoy the game a lot, liked the plot, and question does the hero get the girl??? I have to find out when I play the next Red Faction. :D

Pros:
- Save and load anywhere.
- Plenty of cool and/or funny easter eggs.
- Bots are pretty good.
- Hilarious dialogues from the bots.
- Great boss fight challenge.
- Lots of weapons to use in game.
- Awesome vehicles to use in game.
- Awesome hit boxes as well great graphics for being in it's timed.
- Mechanics are fantastic in this game, such as destroying environment in all 3 dimensions.
- The Plot was good, and made it feel like it was going on for so long as you're playing.

Cons:
- Almost no con for this game really.
- Multiplayer, almost no one online, but that what happens to most old games.

Not like Half Life* but it's still fun.

Most modern game's such as Call of Duty** or even AAA game's don't have even the slightest bit of destruction, and that realy disapoint's me, Red Faction was made in 2001! and it has fun destruction, however, not the most realistic. that goe's to, well....... i've played some game's with good destruction, but still i'm not sure witch one has the best destruction.

It has just about no story... at all, but that dosn't make it a bad game, it's still realy fun.

Gaphic's may be ahead of 2001, but as of 2016, Pre-Schooler's could make better Graphic's.
Difficulty not very hard, it Probibly easier than most game's today, the boss's aren't very hard, they just have alot of health.

Pros:

1. Great story.
2. Great Mechanics.
3. Great shooter.
4. Nice weapon hit detection.
5. Easy progress with decent freedom in choice of action.

Cons:

1. Worse graphics than Half Life 1. THQ wasnt really known for GFX back then.
2. Too easy.
3. Poor enemy AI. Always keep running towards you or away when on low health.
4. Although given as a game mechanic it is really really hard to manually shoot the weapon out of an enemy's hands.

7/10 - A Classic.

As somebody whom has never played the Red Faction franchise until this year, I have to say I am pleasantly surprised at how well it plays and how enjoyable it turned out to be after almost 15 years after it's original release.

Red Faction is often compared to Half-Life, and after completing the first game in the series, it is easy to see why. They are indeed very similar in terms of gameplay and atmosphere, but even though Half-Life definitely remains the better game overall, Red Faction definitely has it's perks and charms that no other game I have played is yet to match, though also a fair amount of flaws too.

One of the main selling-point features in this game is the geo-mod mechanic, which was pretty awesome for it's time and is still a feature that some games could learn from today. The geo-mod mechanic for those of you that don't know is the ability to alter the terrain and environment surrounding you, in Red Faction for example: If you can't get through a certain door, you may very well be able to blow holes in the wall to get through it instead of backtracking for hours to find a key. This alone makes this game stand out amongst the crowd of FPS games from the early 2000's.

With the geo-mod mechanic aside, Red Faction is still a fun FPS game to play despite it's age, the gameplay is nice and varied, the singleplayer campaign is lengthy and there are a nice variety of weapons to use (despite the fact that the shotgun is easily the worst one in FPS history!), as said before, very similar to Half-Life in terms of it's gameplay.

This version of the game comes with a share of bugs that you should be aware of though, particularly later on in the campaign which can prove to be game-breaking in some cases (the scene with the giant robot for example sometimes glitches out), there is also no auto-save or checkpoint feature so be sure to utilize quick-saves very frequently.

All in all, if you're a fan of retro FPS games, I'd suggest adding Red Faction to your collection. I'm glad I took the time to play it and am happy to say that it holds up well for an old title, despite some bugs that seem to have found their way into the Steam version.

Should be released decade later and be game of my generation.
When you leave your hometown to find work, only to become slave (this time -in XXII century).
Whem employers treat you like a trash.
When hard work is not profitable anymore (for you).
Who you gonna call? Red Fac...actually only Parker because others die like flies and leader is rude.

I liked the fact that nobody treat you like a hero here, even though you're the only one who survived.

If you want to enjoy communism without invitating red army - go on, it will be only $1...

Technical stuff - don't do stealth sections 100% nonlethal, grab PureFaction path and enjoy.

Blow a hole on Mars the game
Its a pretty good fps with the destruction gimmick being a bit of a letdown since you cant really destroy everything,
Its pacing is weird with good levels and bad ones, but worth a look if you like fps.

Oh no. A door I can't get past. Well I could go and backtrack for 3 hours and fight enemies that have respawned again, looking for that keycard... or I could just blow a hole in the wall and go around it. Like literally anyone carrying explosives would do.

THIS IS WHY RED FACTION IS ONE OF THE BEST GAMES EVER MADE. WHY IS THIS THE ONLY GAME WHERE THAT'S A ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ OPTION.

It's a rainy thursday evening, and Summer-Rain
has a thermometer sticking out of her mouth
as she curls up in bed, shifting underneath the
covers. You feel her forehead tenderly with your
hand's exterior before checking her temperature.

"Seems like it's going down..." You tell her, while
she pulls a long face. You open your laptop and
engage the Steam client, looking for a game to
play together, a simple one, to take her mind off
of the fever. Suddenly she grabs your arm, and
orders you to stop scrolling in your library.

"What's that one? I've heard of it, but it doesn't
seem familiar."
Summer-Rain points at a game
you remembered buying on the franchise sale.

RED FACTION.

You tell Summer-Rain about how you were ten
years old when the game came out and you had
to play as a miner named Parker who started as
a disenfranchised worker on Mars before leading
an entire Revolution against his evil company,
Ultor.

Summer-Rain pulls the sheets up to her nose and
says she wants ice cream while she watches you
play Red Faction. After a short trip to the kitchen
and fetching her a bowl of vanilla ice cream, the
introductory cutscene plays as Parker narrates
his down-on-his-luck life as a miner on Mars.

The introductory level opens quickly enough. A
fellow miner is provoked into assault with the
guards, and all hell breaks loose, with you quickly
obtaining a stun baton to bludgeon guards with
and a 9mm pistol as a basic firearm.

Remote charges that stick to targets and grenades
round out your arsenal in this starting stage,
and Summer-Rain laughs while you latch remote
charges to the oncoming Guards, their arms
flailing wildly as they scream and run about
before you detonate them.

You encounter an APC amid a rocky bridge as
Summer-Rain tells you to be careful, expecting
you to face the APC head-on with your Rocket
Launcher which has minimal ammo. You opt to
blow up the two edges of the rock bridge, which
sends the Guards and the APC falling to their
death down the ravine below.

"How-?!" Summer-Rain exclaims, before telling
her that this game has Geo-Mod technology, a
precursor to DICE's Frostbite engine and their
destruction 2.0. "Although this game is from
2001, almost everything you see that isn't part
of the preprogrammed story is fully destructable."

You are soon taking on Guards in drilling vehicles,
travelling between sabotaged power plants in
Submarines and even taking to the skies in one
level in one of Ultor's AESIR Fighters. By now, you
have obtained an Assault Rifle, a Shotgun, the
deadly Precision Rifle with 4x zoom scope and
almighty Sniper Rifle with 10x zoom scope.

Through it all, Summer-Rain mindlessly munches
ice cream in anticipation of what comes next,
with Parker laying waste to everything before him
in his quest to be free of Ultor and Mars.

The villains of the game, Dr. Capek and later the
cold, calculating mercenary Masako, prove to be
some of the most difficult boss fights in the game
with your meager health and zero modern-day
mechanics a player takes for granted, such as
shields and auto-save checkpoints.

When you die and you had the unfortunate habit
of not saving in a game like Red Faction, you find
yourself at the beginning of the Miner Uprising
at the start of the game, having to do it all. over.
again.

The supporting characters of Red Faction are
minimal, but they all compliment the story very
well. The hacker Hendrix is a non-annoying
version of Otacon, Summer-Rain observes, while
she likes the no-nonsense attitude of the Red
Faction leader Eos, and her right-hand man
Orion, who appears only a few times, but chews
up scenery well with his sincere voice acting.

The enemies of Red Faction progress incredibly
well. First there are regular guards, then the
Officers, with their rough-and-tumble black
assault rifles, red visors, yellow trim and biting
attitudes to match.

Later, armored Mercenaries take over the
enemy role, armed with heavy machine
guns, one-hit-kill Railguns (which can see
and shoot through walls)
and the dreaded
Fusion Rocket Launcher.

The end comes, and you have to disarm a
bomb that Eos is strapped to, but the controls
to disarm the bomb make no sense, and you
swear to the High Lords of Valhalla that the
timer is rigged. Summer-Rain has long finished
her vanilla ice-cream, cowering under the
blanket and hoping you can save Eos in time.

The screen fades to white, and both of you
find yourselves at the main menu of the game,
where you load your last save and find that
you have to fight Masako in her AESIR Fighter
again before you can try to disarm the bomb
she strapped to Eos. Summer-Rain heaves a
small sigh of disappointment.

"I could never figure out the sequence in time
back then anyway."
You shrug, apologizing
to Summer-Rain. She sets aside your laptop
and draws you in for a hug. Summer-Rain
thanks you for showing her a game from
your childhood, and if anything, she enjoyed
the ride with you, watching you play as
Parker and try to take down the Ultor
Corporation has her feeling better than
the fever that got her down.

You smile and say that you have to go
and prepare some things for tomorrow's
class before you can join her for the night.
"Go on, go on... hurry back so I don't get
too cold without you!"
She says. You nod,
and reach for your laptop, before her hand
closes on yours. "Leave the laptop." She
orders, and you shrug as you leave to pack
your bags for the class tomorrow.

As you leave her room, you hear the sound
of swooshing doors of the main menu theme
and a guard shouting the familiar words to
a certain Parker...

"HOLD IT, MINER!"

You turn round and see Summer-Rain
looking away from you at the ceiling, her
mouth in mock whistling. "Better red than
dead, huh Summer?"

She beams back at you.

RED FACTION.

Pros
-Good story
-Fun mechanics
-Variety of weapons.

Cons
-No auto save feature, only manual saves.
-The sneaking around missions are tedious

Neutral
-People talking to you can be drowned by the action around.

Tips
-Use the purefaction patch to be able to play in widescreen and at an higher resolution than the game allows (make sure to dowload the beta, this is the only version that works with steam. Check out the guide in the community section for more info)
-Lock the framerate to 60. Anything higher and it will cause some game breaking bugs.

Still a classic. Grab it and have fun.

What happens when you mix the first Half-Life game with the original Total Recall movie (1990)? The first game on the Red Faction franchise featured a narrative and playable style very similar to Valve's first title and was set on a martian colony in a dystopian future like the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie.

PROS:

- Solid gameplay (very similar to the first Half-Life with a low gravity twist thanks to the martian surface).
- Non-Stop levels (the maps doesn't count with a "beginning" or "end" per se, just like the first Half-Life game).
- Multiple fully controllable aerial, marine and land vehicles (each one counts with a precise control and multiple weapons/modes of fire).
- Lots of cool futuristic weapons (each one with its corresponding primary and secondary fire mode).
- Multiple ways to reach an objetive or location (alternatives routes prevent the game to be fully lineal).
- Destructible enviroments (the Geo-Mod Technology allows you to use this to your advantage for destroying enemy cover, finding secrets, create shortcuts, alternative routes, etc).
- Some great graphical aspects for its age (dynamic lighting and water effects).
- Despite its age, the Multiplayer game mode remains active with more than 30 servers with players (at the moment of writing this review).

CONS:

- Given the Non-Stop character of the maps, the game does not save your progress automatically (there is no Auto-Save, so you have to be very aware to Quick-Save from time to time. Also, you only have one Quick-Save slot, so you have to know when and where to do it).
- some dialogue and characters are cliche and even generic (from my POV).
- The IA tends to cheat towards the end of the game, firing weapons that pass through walls/cover out of your vision range (although some weapons allows you to do the same thing).
- A little short.

If you liked the first Half-Life game regarding narrative, design, shooting mechanics and adding that you can control several vehicles, plus the atmosphere of the original Total Recall movie (1990) you have a winner in here.

There are Mods that allows you to play the game with widescreen and modern resolutions, in addition to correct some bugs (although i played the original Steam version).

My Score: 7.6/10

Note: Played it on Windows XP - SP3

Really awesome game, amazing mechanics and graphics for its time, I mean it has a fully destructible map, most modern shooters don't have that, well worth the price, here are some guides you need to do if you're running this on a modern rig though. Use this guide if you're planning to play this game on a modern Windows 7 computer because the base game is a mess when it comes to that http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=187911016
