About This Game

Set 50 years after the climactic events of the original Red Faction, Red Faction: Guerrilla allows players to take the role of an insurgent fighter with the newly re-established Red Faction movement as they battle for liberation from the oppressive Earth Defense Force. Red Faction: Guerrilla re-defines the limits of destruction-based game-play with a huge open-world, fast-paced guerrilla-style combat, and true physics-based destruction.

Key features

  • Open World Guerrilla Warfare — You decide who, when, where and how to battle. Utilize guerrilla tactics, improvised weaponry, and modified vehicles to lead insurgent attacks on EDF targets. Launch attacks based on your own gameplay style, take on missions in any order you choose, or engage in destructive activities to weaken the EDF's grip on Mars.
  • Strategic Destruction — Use destruction to your tactical advantage, setting ambushes or chain reaction explosions to attack enemy strongholds and permanently modify the game environment. Leverage fully-dynamic physics-based destruction to improvise on the fly: blow holes in a wall or floor to set an ambush or escape, take out a staircase to stop your pursuers, or drive vehicles through blown out walls.
  • Evolving & Emergent Gameplay — Carve your path through an ever changing landscape as you improvise your combat tactics - mixing gameplay styles, vehicles, weapons and explosives to defeat the EDF.
  • Epic Sci-Fi Setting — Explore the huge, unforgiving Martian landscape, from the desolate mining outpost of Parker to the gleaming EDF capital city of Eos; then tear through the fully destructible open-world environments swarming with EDF forces, Red Faction resistance fighters, and the downtrodden settlers caught in the cross-fire.
  • Multiplayer Combat — There is no place to hide when you put your guerrilla warfare skills to the test in a variety of highly destructive multiplayer combat modes.

Red Faction Guerrilla is a fantastic game set on Mars, with a fully destructible environment and Mjolnir. If any more really needs to be said, you have no sense of fun.

Unfortunately, when I first attempted playing this, the computer I was on decided to crap out and die (coincidentaly, the game ran fine but the hard drive exploded and took the rest out with it), and only recently have I been able to move up from my HP Pavilion laptop. But, after about an hour in the game, I have concluded that smashing through a wall and using the debris that forms to ambush and enemy ambush is perhaps the greatest experience I have had in a game.

Sure, RFG has been rightly criticised for its boring characters and non-existent storyline, but I feel that people who over-emphasise those shortcomings are rather missing the point.

Mechanically, I believe this as one of the greatest games of all time, not just for its destruction engine, which was far ahead of its time, and remains unmatched by anything made since, but also for the way it blends seamlessly into its brilliant combat, and the quality of that combat itself. I've spent hundreds of hours raiding bases in RFG's massive and colourful sandbox world, getting into raging firefights against waves upon waves of troops, tanks and airships, with buildings crashing down as they're hammered by cannon shells and explosive charges, and plowed into by out of control vehicles.

The shooting alone is excellent. They've nailed the sense of feedback you get from firing your weapons so that every kill feels inordinately satisfying, more so than in anything else I've ever played. The high quality sound effects and music only complement the effect. You can complain about the story, but I've been playing this for years and never even bothered finishing the main missions. The moment to moment sandbox gameplay is just that good.

Fuc4ing briloiant game.

One fo the few examples of ports done right, this game is just as good as the ps3 version ( which i completed the f4ck out of ).

Game is a solid 60fps and the geomod engine works perfectly. The entire game enviroment is destructable.

The story is mediocre but has instances of intrigue but they're too few and far between its difficult to keep engaged.

Overall a great third person game!

Viva la revolución!

Red Faction Guerrilla is a futuristic si fi 3rd person open world game set on Mars.
RFG is pretty much what would happen if Just Cause 3 and Mad Max had a baby.

You have a baron wasteland to explore, and a FULLY DESTRUCTABLE ENVIORNMENT. I cannot stress how amazing a game where everything is destructible. It is by far one of the game's strongest aspects, and one of its most limiting aspects. I say this because the game lacks any memorable landmarks, since you can pretty much destroy everything.

You get a lot of action packed missions, decent variety, MECHS!, and of course... a sledge hammer.

The game doesn't have the best of stories however, just like Just Cause series, it doesn't matter.

So go out there and remember, Viva la revolución!

I recommend this game on sale.

A very fun open world action game. What makes Red Faction: Guerilla stand out is the destruction physics which are truly awe-inspiring. They are not like what you see in other games, it is much more in depth. Its very satisfying to take a hammer and reduce a building to dust, watch it crumble apart, it never really gets old. The moment I picked up the hammer and break down the first wall in the tutorial was when I knew it was cool.

One fun memory I had of this game was when I was inside a building and there was an enemy tank firing at the building and I saw the building I was in crumble around me, the building falling apart in front of your eyes, the walls would get destroyed and troops would start firing on me through them, I rush outside just in time before the building clopses completely. Another time, I had to kill some snipers on the roof, so I used the disintegrate gun to shoot the ceiling of a building and the sniper on top fell through and I hit him with my hammer. It creates a new dimension to sandbox games that you don't see in many other games and has yet to be topped to this day. Every time you pilot a tank and fire missiles into buildings, or a mech suit and rage through buildings, is awesome. Why somebody hasn't taken this technology and applied it to a pure tank or mech game is beyond me, as the missions where you pilot a tank or a mech suit were probably my fondest memories of this game and could have made a great tank or mech game with them.

Some missions did not utilize the destruction physics to their fullest potential, such as any of the driving missions which are usually really boring with floaty driving (although given the setting on Mars I suppose it makes sense), however most of them were very good. My favourite side missions were the demolition ones where you level a building or structure using limited supplies, like a puzzle almost, which were fun, and I also really enjoyed the house arrest side missions where you have to rescue fellow resistance fighters because in those missions, you have to actually be careful about which parts of the building you want to destroy as you don't want to level the building with your buddies inside it or you lose, which you don't really need to do in the rest of the game.

There were a few design flaws, such as when a fellow guerilla helps you out and gets killed and you support in that area because the AI isn't the greatest. Losing 3 support points every time you die in free roam was annoying too. Plus sometimes buildings would be held up with only one wall and wouldn't fall over, when in real life they would have. I wish this game would have gotten a real sequel that expanded upon the destruction physics and made them even better and more satisfying, it could have even been a more linear game or a level based game like Hitman because most of the actual missions in Guerilla are quite linear themselves.

The focus is on the sandbox fun and the story is a loose framework to hang this on. I recommend skipping the cutscenes because they are pretty boring, plus it was not very clear on who the Maurauders are in the story. All you need to know is that there's an evil totalitarian government and you're out to take them down and get revenge.

Music and audio were fine. Multiplayer is pretty dead but I've heard its fun so there might be some steam groups around to play with.

Overall, definitely worth playing through, I played it years ago on console and it still holds up today. I played it on Hard this time and the difficulty was still fine, it was fun on Normal too, will play through it on Insane sometime in the future.

Absolutely incredible game, even better multiplayer. Such a shame how few people are online these days. This game really deserves more publicity as one of the greatest games of all time!

Red Faction Guerrilla Review

===

Rating: 7.0 / 10 - An average open world TPS / Action game

===

Disclaimer:

I have completed this game before on a not steam version, then got on Steam with some bundle and played it again with some modding involved. I did not complete the main campaign on this version because the custom modding i made broke a main quest, but i completed the game already. Just to inform you guys this is a proper review like always.

===

Pros & Cons

+ Pros +

+ Everything can be destroyed, with accurate physics simulation, one of the best destructibilities ever seen in gaming even in 2016

+ Fun gameplay

+ Many upgrades to unlock

+ Many side quests, albeit repetitive in some cases, some others are very varied and challenging, depends on the type

+ Colonial mars is an original and interesting setting

+ Good AI of enemies and allies

+ Good variety of weapons and gadgets

- Cons -

- Short. On max difficulty, doing all the side missions and main quest, top longevity is 16 hours

- Unrealistic damage on people. You can fall down a mountain by rolling all the way down and be fine or with some minor damage afterwards. Same for all characters.

- Graphics quality, especially on textures, shaders and models, is pretty bad even for the year this title came out.

- Storyline and main characters are stereotyped and anonymous, they mostly will not involve the player

===

Conclusions

Mostly, RFG is good just for its gameplay based on awesome destruction. All other aspects are much sub-par in terms of quality, but the gameplay is the real deal and is realized perfectly.

If you do not care about some pretty bad graphics, story, characters and some locations but just care about having fun and good gameplay, this is for you.
