About This Game

Set 50 years after the climactic events of the original Red Faction, Red Faction: Guerrilla allows players to take the role of an insurgent fighter with the newly re-established Red Faction movement as they battle for liberation from the oppressive Earth Defense Force. Red Faction: Guerrilla re-defines the limits of destruction-based game-play with a huge open-world, fast-paced guerrilla-style combat, and true physics-based destruction.

Key features

  • Open World Guerrilla Warfare — You decide who, when, where and how to battle. Utilize guerrilla tactics, improvised weaponry, and modified vehicles to lead insurgent attacks on EDF targets. Launch attacks based on your own gameplay style, take on missions in any order you choose, or engage in destructive activities to weaken the EDF's grip on Mars.
  • Strategic Destruction — Use destruction to your tactical advantage, setting ambushes or chain reaction explosions to attack enemy strongholds and permanently modify the game environment. Leverage fully-dynamic physics-based destruction to improvise on the fly: blow holes in a wall or floor to set an ambush or escape, take out a staircase to stop your pursuers, or drive vehicles through blown out walls.
  • Evolving & Emergent Gameplay — Carve your path through an ever changing landscape as you improvise your combat tactics - mixing gameplay styles, vehicles, weapons and explosives to defeat the EDF.
  • Epic Sci-Fi Setting — Explore the huge, unforgiving Martian landscape, from the desolate mining outpost of Parker to the gleaming EDF capital city of Eos; then tear through the fully destructible open-world environments swarming with EDF forces, Red Faction resistance fighters, and the downtrodden settlers caught in the cross-fire.
  • Multiplayer Combat — There is no place to hide when you put your guerrilla warfare skills to the test in a variety of highly destructive multiplayer combat modes.

A single player game that has a fun multiplayer mode. Everything is destructible! Melee is overpowered and will make you ROFL. Play with some friend for the most pleasant experience. The more, the better.

This is a fun game when you want to blow stuff up. With all buildings destructible, it's a blast (pun intended) finding new ways to destroy enemy outposts. However, it does get boring after a while as really it's rinse and repeat. There are only a few types of missions and they are all pretty much the same except for layout of the enemy outposts.

Multiplayer is my favorite part of this game. Multiplayer is like an arena shooter, with the same awesome destruction from singleplayer, same weapons, and added "backpacks" pickups that give you incredible abilities like running through walls with the force of a Rino.

Multiplayer is truly a unique experience, unfortunately, there are not enough players to reliably find a match when you often like.

However, there is a bot you can add as a friend on Steam that will message you when there are lobbies available. This bot is the alternative to waiting in matchmaking for ridiculous periods of time without finding any players.

You can add the bot here: http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198259171976

It's only fair that I now write a positive review about this game, because the new people who updated and fixed this game did a fantastic job.

When I purchased this game originally, it simply did not work. I had to do all kinds of crazy things to even start the game, and it was horrible even when it started. I complained vehemently to steam and to the "support" behind the game, and very little came of it. This was also before steam implemented a refund policy... But I wasn't alone, and these people clearly weren't finished with it.

The game has been reworked marvelously and hasn't been a problem since. Onto the actual gameplay: I played it when it came out on Xbox 360 for god only knows how long, and the game is still fun to me now! The physics in the destructible environment are, for the most part, pretty intuitive, but there are some instances where things just don't add up. Structures WITHOUT support kinda hanging on to nothing, but overall it's a blast. I highly recommend it.

Basic Information
  • Title: Red Faction: Guerilla
  • Genres: Action
  • Developesr: Volition, Reactor Zero & Nordic Games
  • Publishers: Nordic Games & THQ
  • Release Date: The 15th of September, 2009

General Impression
Red Faction: Guerrilla is a very nice open-world destruction game. From my point of view, would be a nice Grand Theft Auto: Mars Edition. That’s because it is an extremely open-world game, being a huge advantage. I had a lot of fun with this game. Off to the features: The graphics are well-designed, everything has a smooth looking, there were a lot of items which needed to be polished, and the developers proved to do it pretty nicely. The textures are nice and well-made. The atmosphere varies between 7 different environments, where the buildings will change, the enemies will be tougher and more, the sky’s and the overall map will look quite different (the color, sometimes it’s more windy, etc.) It’s a really nice atmosphere, indeed some places are not lively, but good morning, this is Mars, what did you expect? It’s realistic. The audio is nice, everything sounds well, the voice acting, the cars’ sounds, the tanks’ sounds, the guns’ sounds, etc. They were made to sound pretty realistic as well. The music is a nice feature as well, the music changes from the point where you are not in a combat status, where an ambient music will play, and when you will combat, a dynamic music will play. Hence there aren’t many types of music, they are all well-made, and I appreciate that. The gameplay is a pretty strong point. This game is open-world. You have many side quests, such as reaching a location in a matter of time, or destroying a location in a matter of time, saving arrested citizens, and also unexpected side missions, where you will have to go to a base and defend from the EDF. The main quests will generally come consecutive, meanwhile sometimes you will need to go to a certain location to activate the mission, or you need to get the maximum respect from the citizens of the respective area in order to unlock the last mission of the area, as example. Salvage is also a very important feature, by collecting salvage you can upgrade guns or buy new ones. The story is well-thought, and you will constantly experience it throughout the game. The user-interface is well-designed, and also it has additional designing and synthetized information. The controls are very well-chosen, all of them are easy-to-learn and good. The engines are alright, I haven’t found any haven’t met any bugs, crashes, screen freezes or frame drops. On bad computers, you will experience easy lagging, hence I actually didn’t. The mechanics… we need to talk more about this one here. Destruction. That’s what would resume the mechanics. There are so many ways to kill your infantry enemies, your vehicle enemies, your tank enemies, any building, and even other elements. Buildings, especially… have a very complex way of destruction. They destruct in a very realistic way. All the damage given to them is as it should be, nor too low, nor too high. The characters move well, the cars are fast and feel very good when driving them, and even other positive elements. Overall, Red Faction: Guerrilla is a great open-world destruction simulator, with nice graphics, awesome gameplay, interesting story and sophisticated mechanics.

Positive Points
  • Nice and well-designed graphics and textures
  • Large and different atmospheres
  • Pretty nice audio and music
  • Awesome, fun and challenging gameplay
  • Many main and side quests available
  • Purchasable guns by salvage items
  • An interesting story
  • Well-designed user-interface with additional designs
  • Well-chosen controls
  • Pretty stable engines
  • Sophisticated mechanics
  • Steam achievements and trading cards available

Neutral Points
  • Some racing missions would be a nice feature
  • Being able to talk to people would also be a nice feature

Negative Points
  • The multiplayer is not alive anymore, a big disadvantage
  • Some missions are pretty uninteresting, such reaching a point with your car in a certain amount of time

Played this a lot on 360 and loved it. Saw it available for PC and snagged it and it's so great to have it again. Such an amazing open-world game. Just wish Multiplayer was busy enough for matches because this game has one of the best multiplayers I've ever played.

Red Faction: Guerilla is the prime of games based solely on Destruction and Mayhem. If you enjoy blowing stuff up, or knocking stuff down, this is the game for you.

If you want a story that pulls you in and a large array of gameplay mechanics, probably best to look elsewhere...

This game is strictly......."Run around Mars, blow crap up, knock crap down, and shoot people."

- Review of Red Faction Guerrilla Steam Edition Single Player -
The game itself is awesome ; destroying structures never gets old, walkers are a blast to use ( too bad you only get to play them a few times ),your arsenal is varied and destructive, and enemy AI are smart, they adapt to destroyed environments and always try to flank and kite you.
But it does have its flaws;
(-) Story is pretty generic and feels rushed ; before you know it you'll be playing the final mission with no build up for the final confrontation against EDF ( antagonists )
(-) Characters are uninteresting and forgettable
(-) Framerate stutters when a lot is happening
(-) Physics in this game is whack, such as when a building is still standing with only one scaffolding left. and my characters can get shoved by slowly-moving rubble until he dies
(-) Civilian AI is incredibly stupid ; they run in circles and into firefights and hide under a building when it's very clear that it's collapsing; this might not be annoying had there be no consequences, but there is; civilian morality drops after they do stupid stuff like this
(-) Guerrilla AI is also dumb ; they always seem to follow around and sometimes end up hiding under collapsing buildings or near explosives; you'll also be punished by losing morality because they do this
Aside from its flaws ; fun, chaos, and destruction ensues for those who bought this game
