About This Game

The Next Installment to the Award-Winning RTS.
While many were hopeful that diplomacy would finally end the war, differing opinions on what should be done, along with the depleted power of the controlling factions, has led to a splintering of the groups involved.

The loyalist members of the Trader Emergency Coalition adopt a policy of isolation, focusing on enhanced defenses to ride out the rest of the war. Those who rebel against the coalition take on a purely militant view, coming to the opinion that the only way to bring peace is by ultimately crushing all who oppose them - especially xenos.

For the first time in their history, the war creates a schism in the Advent Unity. The loyalists seek to continue their policy of revenge against the Traders, and to assimilate all others to the Unity’s influence. However, others amongst the Advent suspect that a corrupting influence from within has diverted the Unity from its proper destiny.

The divide created in the Vasari Empire is less pronounced, but just as severe to their people. With the Vasari now practically frantic to move on to new space, the loyalist faction abandons cooperation and decides to take the resources they need by any means necessary. Having accepted the need to work together, the rebel faction feels that their best chance for survival is to work with the other races and bring them along to flee the approaching enemy.

Take the battle for galactic supremacy to its ultimate level in Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion – a standalone RT4X game that combines the tactics of real-time strategy with the depth of the 4X genre (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate).

Key features:

  • New Factions: Decide whether to play as a Loyalist or Rebel – each unlocks new technologies, ships and play styles for each race.
  • New Titan Class Warships: Mighty titans enter the fray of the war to tip the scales of power. Each faction may field their own unique titan, drawing upon unique strengths and abilities on the battlefield.
  • New and Updated Capital Ships: A new capital ship joins the fleet for each race to offer even more tactical options. Additionally, all existing capital ships have been upgraded to four levels for their abilities, allowing players to focus their ships along specific strengths.
  • New Corvette Class Ships: Small and maneuverable, each faction has developed a new light attack craft to harass enemy forces.
  • Updated Visuals: Updated graphics, particle effects, lighting and shadows, race specific UI and other enhancements make the Sins’ universe look better than ever.
  • New Victory Conditions: Take multiple paths to victory including – Military, Diplomatic, Research, Last Flagship Standing, Last Capital Standing and Occupation.
  • New Audio: More than 60 minutes of original music, countless new sound effects and dozens of new voice overs help bring the drama of battle to new levels of immersion.
  • Tutorials: New and updated tutorials make it easy for both experienced and new players to quickly start building their own solar empire.
  • Plus, a number of optimizations that provide better performance than ever before!

Really interesting as far as 4X games go. It's real-time, so you are forced to divide your attention more than in traditional turn-based 4X games. At the same time, ship movement and combat is pretty slow, so you have time to plan maneuvers if that's your thing.

I'm definitely still learning the ropes (even though I've been playing SOASE on-and-off years) because they keep adding content. I'm also exmperimenting with using few ship classes and trying to really coordinate abilities. And I'm loving it. This bundle was a steal at $15, and I will definitely be tided over until Stellaris drops in price.

A "quick" game of this, is around a hour or two.
An average game is around four hour at least.

If you like Supreme Commander, you'll also like this.
The only downside is that you can only build one Titan instead of a dozen of experimentals to steamroll the opposition.

Oh and you'll have to expand your territory instead of building generators and fabs to generate resources.

This game is a logical extension of the other Sins games that came before it, the biggest addition is BIG HUGE SHIPS. If you haven't played any of the previous Sins of a Solar Empire games and you like space RTS games than this game is the game for you. The mods for this game are very good as well, I personally enjoy the Star Trek mods and some great ones exist for this game. I believe Stargate and Halo mods also exist. Well worth your money!

Love the game. Many different ways to play, the gameplay is awesome as are the graphics/sound. So many awesome mods for it too. If only it didn't take them so long to release 1.83...

So far from what I've seen this is just anothe RTS. If your into RTS you may like it. If your looking for a little deeper game play then you probably will not. I'm glad I got it on sale. Another game that will be put on yhe side line. I tryed to study this game before I bought it. I read the reveiws, read the forums. It's listed under deplomace game tag. Most of it is not true. If your looking for Command & Conqure great, but if your looking for more like Civilization forget it. I have found a couple of RTS games I like, But no matter what they say, I will stick to Turn Based Games.

I'm marking it as Recommend because it is not a bad game. But if your like me then I would not recommend it. I will try a bigger map and see if it's any better but I don't think it will be. If I find it is better with bigger maps or more game play I will edit this. But if you get it make sure it's on sale.

Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion is in its core a Command & Conquer type RTS in space with light 4x elements

4x Features
Let's start with the 4x elements first. There is almost no planetary development. You can grow population, add some slots for buildings, improve your planet's health all with a couple of clicks. It will take a few minutes to fully develope your planet.

The research tree is generic. When you build let's say a frigate factory you will unlock one ship type. There is a research tab for every ship in the game for unlock only purpose. There are 4 tabs alone for upgrading armor, doing the same thing for every tab. Same thing for laser weapons, 3 tabs where every tab is divided into 2 levels ( need to research 1 tab twice) for every incremental increase in laser damage. There is so much unnecessary stuff in the tree that it is just not tech tree worthy as a whole.

Expansion is pretty straightforward take a planet by force or take it over by influence. Panets are connected by phase lanes (strings) over which are you able to move and spread your influence. I'd say diplomacy is the only 4x worthy element this game has to offer and worked out well. You can accept missions to increase their relation with you or you give them a mission to improve your relation with them. If the relation in both ways is high enough the chance of them accepting heavier stuff is more probable.

You may ask (missions) a faction to destroy ships, capital ships, structures etc and the amount of it. If they kill 5 or 15 enemy ships for you depends on the relationship. You are also able to join pacts. The better the relation, the more pacts you can join like cease fire, peace, vision or trade treaties. Managing your economy is just as thin as in any other RTS, colonize asteroids for metal and crystal income and max out your population for credits.

RTS based gameplay
First of all there is no singleplayer campaign, it is just pure skirmish against bots and multiplayer. Second point I want to make is that the majority of your game time is spend by battling enemy fleets. Gameplay wise you build up a fleet of mixed unit types. Attack the enemy, lose a big chunk of your fleet, rebuild your fleet and go for the next planet. Flanking does not pay off. There isn't any tactics involved other than timing the activation of your ship's special abilities.

There is no stealth, no surgical strikes, no flanking. Every game plays out the same, build a big balanced fleet and overwhelm the enemy. Quick building is your way to succes. This is a casual RTS game with extra bells and whistles (4x elements) which lacks strategic depth. The game has good graphics and the battles are nice to see when you are zoomed in, which rarely happens anyway. I did not expect this game to have such a lack of tactical gameplay, such a shame.

For a casual RTS experience this game is good. Good graphics, flashy space battles, lots of cool units, wonderful sound effects, always things to do, mods and the 4x elements , altough very minor, are a plus. I would not buy the game if you expect a 4x game, total war style of gameplay or the ability to use tactics to decide battles. I would only recommend this game if you want another casual RTS experience (with casual I don't mean quality, but there are more of them on the market in terms of gameplay). I will give this game thumbs down however (has nothing to do with rating but with recommendation), the reason for downvoting is the lack of depth gameplay wise and the bells an whistles don't make up for it.

A great space RTS. The DLC makes the game much more enjoyable as well with Starbases, Titans, and more kinds of planets to colonize. I've spent many hours late/early playing with my friends. Also, just when I thought I was getting bored, I figured out the Galaxy Forge (included) which enables you to make fully customizable maps, much more detailed than the in game map designer. One drawback to me is the lack of a single player campaign, but as a sci-fi and RTS fan, this game has the most hours out of any in my library.

Ok so lets start. First off, the time listed played, is one match + the tutorial. I played only one single player map. The smallest one. The time it took me to finish it was over 8 hours. Again this was the first single player map and listed as tiny.

Now I will admit. Part of that was cause I was still getting use to the game. I also kinda limited my self to only upgrading war and defensive upgrades. Leaving out anything that was trade or peace related. This makes it hard cause those upgrades I did not use would help capture some planet types, give better material gathering, give more money, and allow peaceful relations with others in the system so that they did not attack you or even might help ya.

So ya, 8 hours for one tiny map.

This game is fun for anyone who like strategy and long game play. Do not get this game thinking it will be a quick run. There are ways to change the victory setting and not sure how the competitive play fairs. I would imagine there might be some ways to make it go faster.

Also, as far as I can see. There is no storyline or quest line. This is not like Starcraft. You are not doing RTS with a rich story about 3 different races. Your basically playing a glorified chess game. A MASSIVE, BEAUTIFUL, not really that close to chess, chess game.

I was listening to a coworker talk about it and the vids I saw made it look good enough to try. It is, but it is really only good for eating up your time. Need something to just throw countless hours at were there is no story and just plotting and building your forces in hopes you can take out your enemies. Then go for it.

Though if you are not absolutely sure then do what I did and get it at 75% or more off.

This game woke the Darth Vader inside me...
"Attention! A hostile experimental weapon is being constructed in a distant planet!"
*me looks where it is*
*press 1* *Novalith Cannon selected*
*unleashes the total fallout on the planet that was building that experimental weapon*
*goes back to spamming the market button like nothing happened*

P.S: Still on the first game I played on this game...

Combines the original and previous expansions into one solid game. Allows for various mods for even greater replay value. 10/10 would always conquer the galaxy multiple times as different factions from different space fandoms.

Get this game if real time strategy and space empires satisfies your lust of galatic domination.

It's not perfect, but as someone who has played a lot of both RTS and 4X games this is about as perfect as it gets at the moment (okay, okay, I've not played every game out there. I'm happy for folks to buy me games and I'll compare and contrast, though ;) ).

There's a bit of learning, and I'm not finished there yet, but I do feel I have options in what playstyle I follow. I have played mostly with some friends, and we've tried both vs and co-op (plus, recently a mix). Human oposition is better, of course, but my only real with is I could design some maps with a bit more detail - there's three of us at times, and I'd love to create a 2 vs 1 game (with resources to suit) rather than have a tenative 1 vs 1 vs 1 game, whcih is that we tend to fall back to.

But we're all enjoying learning the game and playing it, and look foward to our next games night.

This game... Oh, this game. Where to start?
I will start with this:
If you like RTS games, then this is the one for you. I have had this game, and the prior one, for years as I had purchased them from Stardock. It is a futuristic, space themed strategy game that expands many solar systems and you can colonise everythings, except for the stars, as long as you have the proper research.
The longer you play, the easier it gets, but at the same time, it also gets harder and the dificulty setting increases (as usual). But the jump in dificulty is amazing as you try to play on the highest setting.
There are people online that will ever tear you up at every chance the get, so get your economy going and making your fleet of ships something to be feared.

The largest ship is larger than many of the celestial bodies you send it to fight over. The only reason the ships don't get bigger is because you wouldn't be able to afford them. Seriosuly.

10/10 would play Star-Halo-Trek-Wars-Effect-SG-1

My brother bought this as a gift for me and a group of friends. i find the multi-tiered strategy excellent and the replayability high as well. 2 different factions of each race let you play the same race with a totally different experience. good single player pve, good multiplayer team pve, have not tried all player pvp yet. keeping track of the large maps can be difficult at time [especially when there are 3 different solar systems and 96 planets!] but finding map sizes you like is easy and there are a TON to choose from.
i also really like how each type of ship [different skins for each race mind you] is in the same place...colonizing cap ship is ALWAYS the 3rd one...makes it easy to find and build the ships you want. you can go tech, military, diplomacy, or any combo...LOVE IT!...i'm buying xpacs for all my friends to return the favor!
for someone that wants REAL minutiae and micromanaging this might not be QUITE detailed enough for you...but it gets close. for those who want 'fire and forget' it supports that too. VERY versatile game.
