This game is great. You can really tell it was a labor of love for the people who wrote it. Not just for the (actually amusing, which is rare these days) references but the art and completely pointless but still great settings like arcade screen borders and color style. I wish more games like this would happen. Too often we get 8 bit ♥♥♥♥ with bad art and content that hides behind the excuse of "but teh retro". This doesn't. It's actually better than the original GTAs.

Also the music is awesome.

Aside from indie devs sucking each other off, having Epic Meal Time in the game and stupid ♥♥♥♥ing memes it's a pretty rad video game.

Punheta referencial. Chega a ser irritante a quantidade de referências óbvias amontoadas desesperadamente. A jogabilidade ficou em segundo plano, então falhou no que deveria ser o fator principal em um jogo que é uma suposta homenagem aos 8 bits.

I like the game, simple and fun to play. It's my "go to" when bored with big name titles, easy to put down and pick up again later.

I love what happened here. Though I was slightly disappointed by the game. I think I must be just gettimg old at 33 years. I would have loved this at 15 or so. I still enjoyed it. I love all the heart the author has put into it and it's not easy to make something like this and complete it. Mad props! Great work.

References has always been part of every sector of entertaintment industry. Musicians puts hate or love to their lyrics, as the reference to someone or something, most of times, its affected them. Directors and screenwrites puts to their movies references of another famous movies or people affected movie industry. And so, game developers trying to put references of games, poeple who are/was or affected gaming industry. And sometimes, we can find developers from diamonds, who puts references of all kinds, into their game - Vblank Entertaintment. These guys made out of nothing something and that's Retro City Rampage (RCR) - little indie game, which contains more references, that megabytes that game has.

Most epic adventure for those, who was born before 1990, and biggest nightmare, and "Lost World" for those who wasn't. RCR be like - A-Team GMC van gonna run over you. Green pipes from Mario are everywhere. Brown Dog from my childhood is everywhere. First mission and first reference totally blew me away. School bus runs through the wall of the bank, to stole looted money (reference to Batman: The Dark Knight). And so, almost every minute, you'll find something, from your childhood, or not only.

Difficulty and game-design of this game is just tribute to good old video-game machines - tough difficulty, dozens of secrets, score multipliers, memorable characters, unblockable characters, crazy weapons, aliens and ♥♥♥♥.

If you looking for nostalgia, and wants to go back to your childhood, go for indies, Playstation 1/2 or Retro City Rampage.

PS: Main parallel of the game is Back to Future movie from 1985.

If you want to be hit by a ton of pop culture references while playing a retro style shooter mixed with Grand Theft Auto style game play? Retro City Rampage is what you're looking for. Albeit it does have it's let downs but overall the game is a fun experience.

This gave me a bit of a walk on memory lane with the old styled GTA for gameboy that I used to play when I was a kid. Which is a good comparison for this game. However, I have to admit I got a little bored of it really quick. Granted, it is a lot of fun and there's a strange storyline to it. But most of the time all you're doing is driving (which gets you easily arrested no matter how safe you are), picking up machine parts or fighting people. The cameos are pretty cool, but it's just not enough to spike your interest for too long.

I won't say I don't recommend it though. It's a cheap game that'll kill an hour or two when you're bored. If you're a fan of classic games then you might find more interest in this than I would; but I'd definably watch some gameplay of it because there's not a lot to it.
