I like the concept of this game. the idea of an open world crime game set in video game land filled with parodies of any almost any video game character you can imagine is pretty amazing. Unfortunately it fails to deliver on its awesome premise.
The gameplay for instance leaves a lot to be desired. There are only two types of challenge you get in this game, laughably easy or unfair and frustrating, nothing inbetween. So most of the time you get missions that are shallow and funneled, and the other times you get ones that are just way too brutal for their own good. The pacing is horrible too, it's like this game is hopped up on caffeine or has ADD. You never get to stop and smell the roses because the game just doesn't know how to handle itself, and before you know it the story mode is over in 6 hours.
The game has the same problem narrative-wise as well. It seems like the game was supposed to have somewhat deep characters but that aspect was cut out for some unknown reason. So as a result, if you were looking for a story that at least holds your interest you'll be disappointed. It's just one big mess of unrelated events and characters you see once or twice then never again, there's just no focus whatsoever. The humor is also hit or miss as well. It can range from okay to cringe worthy, sometimes it's just too blunt to be funny.
The sprites are way too small as well which is a problem, they look visually displeasing and actually hurt the gameplay. It highlights what I think did this game in; there was too much of a focus on making the NES limitations authentic and not enough focus on making a good game and the experience suffers for it.
Overall, this game was ambitious but it failed to deliver on it's promises. It's gameplay wasn't engaging and the story was unfocused and all over the place. The map was way too small and the game didn't utilize it's whole video game parody aspect as well as it could have. It's just a load of attempts at something great that failed due to horrible execution. I believe the developer can do better than this and can make a sequel that offers what this game should have. The concept of this game is just too good, another attempt would be worth it.
