It is basically like playing the original GTA, except packed with tons of references to old stuff.

Most of it will probably go over your head if you're under 25, you'll probably get most everything if you're over 25.

This game is just.... Bad on PC. I get that you should play the game with a usb controller but, I dont have a controller soooo, its impossible to play this game. Its esentially Final Doom's Controls but just a biiit harder to control.

Overall, its a good game but the PC version is the one that REALLY requires you to have a controller.

Hold Enter button simulator.

I love the retro sound and graphics.. really feels like an 8bit game but where it fails for me is in the bitty broken up nature of the gameplay. Everytime the action gets going it comes to a halt for the story.

Yes if it wasn't for the story it would be too close to GTA 1 but it does feel like there should have been short elegant segways into the plot instead of the classic mistake of coming to a dead stop to explain stuff. You are a bad guy.. you hurt innocent people while doing bad things.. got it.

This game is a masterpice. It is like gta 1. And also the translation are good. But my biggest enemy is the difficulty. Lots of times you replay the same mission over and over again, but sometims it is very frustrating. But you can have lots of fun with this game.

So yeah, this is a parody of GTA that relies on the unsurmountable amount of pop culture references to make you think it's doing something intelligent when it's not. The plot is completely neglectable, as it simply doesn't make sense. It's repetitive and so are the missions and dialogues, that try to be really clever with the most teen and buttdick humour ever. I was enjoying the sillines of it all until I realised that the dialogues were skippable and not funny, and that everywhere I went it was a hassle because the police was, well, hassling you everywhere. Not only that, but towards mission 40, the combat spikes up so much that it's frustratingly difficult and unfair - particularly for such a basic and not-thought-through system. It's simply not funny or engaging, and too frustrating. As a whole, yes, it's a mildly clever statement "videogame plots never make sense and are over-the-top self-aggrandising rampages!!!". But you can do exactly that with a much cleverer writing, humour and mechanics. Also, this game should have lasted two hours top, and it goes on and on and on and on unnecesarily. Man this is the first game that has made me rage quit and outright uninstall the game.

Grand Theftendo was a homebrew Grand Theft Auto game that was being developed by Brian Provinciano for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). It was developed in 2002, and was due to be released in Fall of 2005.
It was never released, and instead it was replaced with a brand new game, Retro City Rampage.
Grand Theftendo was originally going to be a toned-down version of Grand Theft Auto III.

Tons of references. Extremely fun. Definitely recommended.

Your Rad Uncle Cal here with yet another f*cking review, boyo!

What's RAD?

Simple, yet effective.

- Typícal GTA formula. Steal a car, go from A to B and do some rad a*s sh*t... Any f*ucking quesitons?!

The nostalgia is real!

- Too many god damn references for all ages!
From Back to the Future to Halo. This is just a god damn cluster♥♥♥♥ of parodied awesome sh*t.

Insane and almost unparalleled level of customization including:

- Customization of the mugshot sprite of your character. It can either be body shots of tattos, hats, glasses, masks or even cosmetic surgery to look like people from differentgame development teams. This affects your overworld sprite too! (Sadly, you can only pick 1 of these customizations at a time. But it balances with the fact that the number of these is huge! So you got a wide selection to pick.)

- You can change the color palette of the game to resemble a lot of different vaporware systems such as a NES, PC DOS, Original GameBoy, Virtual boy and a lot more! This definitely changes the experience with each filter and it even helps at giving it a fresh air. There is also an 8bit option. It uses colors only found on the limited 8bit games from old. +2 Nostalgia points!

- The game also has different frames surrounding the screen. From old T.V's to arcade cabinets!

- Two different kinds of HUDs

- 3 levels of zoom.

- Cars that you steal can be painted and you can upgrade it with weapons, nitro boosts, etc.

- It's modable. Like, seriously modable. I mean the dev added the mod package and a pdf with instructions onhow to mod it.

Sick Jams.

- Every single bloody song in this game is a memorable combination of 80's radness, chiptune and Clint Eastwood's tears. Think of this OST as Hotline Miami's cool little brother.

- Different radio stations to pick while playing and a Jukebox to play any speciffic song that you want at any moment.

Vast arsenal.

- From the classic (and my weapon of choice) Baseball Bat to the god damn Ghostbuster's Proton Backpack. Pick your favourite between the 24 different weapons and go outside and melt someone's face already!

60 fps.

- With god damn V-SYNC on. Or without it. Maybe you want 30 fps? Or maybe 30 fps and no v-sync?
Well f*ck you! This baby runs smoothly with the first choice on a potato!

Free MS-DOS version of the game.

- 'cuz he dev didn't forgot about you, techno hipsters!

Aditional Game Modes.

- Arcade Challenges for glory and bragging rights! 14 main challenges and 23 three more for the active completionist of today. You can even save replays of your best sprees to show those ♥♥♥♥ers who won't believe you and steal your lunch money because they're f*cking losers with bad parents! (Oh, and Time Attack for the Story Mode too!)

- Super Turbo Difficulty. For even more bragging rights or just to show how stupid you are!

- Ever played Kirby Air Ride? Remember the City Trial mode free run?
I used to play that ♥♥♥♥ for hours because it relieved me and i just wanted to disconnect myself for a while by being almost like a god.
Well this game also has that mode with different unlockable characters with their own special habilities.
You know.. Just to f*ck around.

Special guests and minigames.

- On this game, you can go to the arcade. Where you can play games while you play games!
This unlocks Super Meatboy, Captain Video, etc. For the Free roam mode.

A lot of cars.

- Self Explanatory.

Your pregnant girlfriend tries (successfully) to kill you and after you come back from the Death (because Death is a cool dude) she tries to get you both married with the help of muscular semi-naked men.

- Can someone explain this to me?

What's BAD?

- Your ugly *ss library without this game. Period.

SCORE:

✪✪✪✪✪✪✪ 8 STARS OUT OF 8

But what about da monies?

Buying it at full price might not be the best of the choices. But if it's on sale you've got no excuse.

I haven't really played the game much yet, though so far it seems really fun and has a great sense of humor, but the Developer responded to my bug report within a couple of hours and had a patch that fixed my Linux gamepad problem out within only hours of when I posted the initial issue.

Ever dreamt of playing an 8-bit rendition of Grand Theft Auto/Saints Row?

Retro City Rampage is a very entertaining 8-bit game which fuses famous 80's movies with video game nostalgia.

Set in an open world with alot to do and alot to learn, this is one of those games you can spend hours in without getting bored.

And there is something here for everyone, whether you just want to highjack cars and go postal or play 8-bit Metal Gear Solid inspired levels. You'll never know exactly what to expect. The game itself is based on missions but one mission may have you do classic 2D platforming while the next is a isometric cover-based shooting mission. Repetitive doesn't exactly exist here and it works.

+Lengthy Single-Player Campaign
+Customize your character
+Tons of weapons
+Great sense of humor
+For all gamers, the older you are the more you will understand
+Mod support
+Tons of replayability without mods
+Retro style art, retro style soundtrack

So you see, whether you're a movie buff or you're just a fan of retro games from the NES era or maybe both (?) then you'll enjoy this game. There are alot of hidden easter eggs in this game that 80's babies will pick up on but also plenty of surprises and fun stuff for the modern gamer as well.

Like a love-child of 3 games... GTAV, Stardew Valley and Saturday Morning RPG. If you like any of those, you'll probably love this one.

Basic Information
Title: Retro City Rampage™ DX
Genre: Action, Adventure, Indie, Racing
Developer: Vblank Entertainment, Inc.
Publisher: Vblank Entertainment, Inc.
Release Date: 11 Nov, 2014

Overview
This has to be one of my favourite 8-bit games on steam. So what is this game exactly? Well it's exactly what it says it is. A 8-bit open world with a nostalgia feel to it, it really has a nice feel to the game. If Grand Theft Auto where made into a 8-bit graphic, with top down perspective, and some inapropriate humour then this is what you would expect from this game.

Game Play
I really wasn't expecting this game to be as fun as it was. Although I have a few faults with the game play sid eof this game, overall it's rather impressive. As you would expect in any open world game there are quite a few missions to get through, and then there are side missions that may help you in the actual missions later on. Some of the side missions are rather quite difficult, and the way that some of them are set out aren't really all that fun to play. After doing a few side missions I kind of just went on with the main story and left them out. They might've helped me in the main missions but I don't really think it would of all that much. As for the main missions, some of them where brutally difficult for me. The final boss wasn't really all what I thought it would be, moving from side to side and dodging whatevere that guy was shooting at you. I did rage a few times but beat it in the end. On a positive note, some of the missions where quite funny and simply just what guy would do to waste time, for example there was a mission to waste time. So you get a hover suit and just bash people on the head instead of waiting. The characters where a little dull and boring, and the story really isn't ll that much, I basically knew what was going on almost all the time without the game telling me what to do. Get a sevral items for the Time Machine and then get back. Not really all that fun but kept me entertained with the decent missions to keep me playing. The game took me about 9 hours to complete, I still sometimes go on it just to run people over in a car and mess around.
Score (Out Of 10): 7 - Some difficult missions and a dull story, but some really fun missions to play, general fun messing about in the overworld and some funny humour.

Graphics/art style
The game (if you haven't already noticed) has a 8-bit styled graphic to it which really works well with everything that happens in the game. Everything looks like you would be able to play it in a old school arcade machine. Although some of the animations are a little lazy, for example the cars don't really have any wheel animation on the ground. This can sometimes make it look like everything is just moving across the road with the wheels not running across the road. I'm not really sure what you could've done to solve that but it was kind of annoying to see that sometimes for me. Other than that nothing else to complain about the game graphics wise.
Score (Out Of 10): 9 - Really nice 8-bit graphics, but some lazy animations here and there.

Music & Sound
The music and sound for this game where both really good. The sounds for certain things weren't at all generic and really fit well with the 8-bit style of the game, the music also fits well with certain scenarios in the game. Whether you're killing a bunch of robots in a tower or just chilling along the road smashing everything in your path! The game really sets the music well.
Score (Out Of 10): 10 - Some really fitting music and no generic sound effects throughout the game

Conclusion
This is probably one of my favourite 8-bit games on steam. With it's decent overworld map to mess about in, the music and sounds along with the awesome 8-bit graphics make it all feel like a pretty solid game. Do be prepaired though for some difficult missions that you might come across in the game that might leave you playing it for more than you want to. But some great humour and game play implemented into this game.
