You hate it. It's bad, poorly balanced, and has toxic community. It's like a mom who beats you in the head with frying pan and yelling bad words at you... but hey! It's still your mom. Deeply in your heart you still love her.

Disclaimer:
Please don't feel offended by my review. We all have different opinions and there's no reason to fight over it. If you don't agree with me, that's fine. I'm not trying to convince you to change the way you feel about the game. This is just my opinion.

Review:

With close to 1300 hours played over two accounts I used to love this game. A simplistic side scrolling MOBA that's very easy to get into, what's not to like? A lot of time was spent in the game, I made friends and we had lots of fun. Unfortunately, as time passed the flaws of the game were revealed.

This game actually favors people with poor internet connections and if you don't have a bad internet connection you might as well simulate one to gain unfair advantage over your opponents. How is this possible? Due to Ronimo being a small company they can't really supply dedicated servers so they designed the game for p2p networking. You have the option to queue in different regions, same or nearby would be recommended. It doesn't matter though, if someone feels the need to queue worldwide (maybe because lack of players) they can join you no matter what your settings are. It gets frustrating real fast playing an opponent with over 300 ms of latency. They can actually pick a naut that favours their ping to get the upper hand because it gets impossible to dodge certain skills because you can't anticipate where a projectile might be on their screen and before you know it you've been hit. If someone choose to queue worldwide you'd think it'd be more of a challenge for them because of latency but it's really the other way around.

And if they don't have high latency they might have packet loss and that can actually trigger effects on abilities multiple times. There's a naut that has the ability to pull other nauts to him using his tongue, if the player has packet loss he can actually tongue you multiple times and this is very frustrating. His client registers that he hit his ability but the packet was lost and had to be sent again and maybe a few more times.

The design wouldn't be so awful if both players had a say in the matter and dedicated servers would make it even better and actually favor players playing on the right side of the globe.

Networking issues aside, the matchmaking could also use some work. Solo queuing is ok but can be a terrible experience since players can just leave the game without any ramifications. If the player hosting the game crashes and the host migration fails everyone gets a loss. Some maps end in single lanes which makes a choke point and favors nauts that can turtle and just delay the game for as long as possible.

edit:
I quit playing this game because it was actually making me rage. I still occasionally play the game for the sake of ongoing tournaments and to keep in touch with the friends I made along the way. The game still has flaws, some of them being addressed (slowly). Until all of the major issues have been resolved I will not recommend this game.

It's a lot of fun to play when the stars align, but whenever people lag (be it due to connectivity issues or if it's intentional) it ruins the experience completely.

With +900 hours ingame and most of the DLC's,im gonna say something I've never expected to say:
This game?
I do not recommend it.
why? well, wait,Im gonna say the positive things about this game, first the good then the bad, right?
+awesome characters
+amazing music
+great maps
+great effects
+great art

Now,the reasons of why I dont recommend to buy this game (at least for its full price):
-Matchmaking,its broken
-lack of servers, connection P2P (if steam dies, like every tuesday, every current game dies, and it counts like if you quitted a game)
-Drop In system is broken, why? well,Drop In system is a bad idea already, but this game makes you join matches where there's a full premade, and no one in your team, well, its an 1vs3,needless to say that the premade already had advantage and started to destroy every turret
-Said system can make you join LOST matches, where the enemy team is already destroying your core (They said its fixed, well let me tell you ITS NOT,I've joined a TON of matches after hte patch that "fixed it" and there were many where I lost as soon as I joined the match)
-Did I mentioned the "Region" system? oh wait,I didnt...lets see, since the game lacks servers, the conection between players of a neighbour country can go from 80ms to 400ms,wich in regular servers in other games, playing with the same players only gives you a 10ms ping
Also literally anyone from any country can join YOUR game, that means you can be playing an almost lagless match but then a chinese or a colombian enteres you match, with their 400ms ping RUINING EVERYTHING
The game says to have a ping-kick limit, but in my own experience you have to have +550ms to get your kicked by lag,and let me tell you,a 250ms ping is already,ALREADY,unplayable. (People with lag can move freely, killing you while you are behind your turret, because in their screen, you werent behind the turret)
-The devs complains that there isnt enough playerbase to fix the matchmaking things
however the playerbase is becomen smaller and smaller with every day that passes
and the devs denies to make the game f2p,or at least free for a few weeks (just like they did in 2012)

So basically the game is having a really low playerbase, which doesnt allow the devs to fix the matchmaking problems
and want to know why the playerbase is becoming smaller? Matchmaking system.

Now,I had many, tons of hours of fun,I meet a lot of new friends,I also make fan art for this game, like I said, the "not so functional things" are amazing and that's what attract me the most to this game, but the functional thing that makes it a MOBA is so broken, that I dont recommend to buy it.

Its up to you,but if you still want to get the game,go get it somewhere cheaper for steam,9,99$ isnt worth AT ALL.

Awesomenauts is based on the premise of casual competition. It is designed to be fun. An interesting result of that is the lack of a real consequence when somebody quits your team. He is replaced by a bot that is often more competent than himself and continues to play in his stead. Another player can join mid-game to replace the bot at any time.

Awesomenauts also has a great community (official forum, not Steam). It has a thriving fanart community, a modding one, a tactics one, etc.

This game really opens itself up to modders. It allows creators to modify in-game bots and make their own using an AI editor. Modders can also create gamemodes using this tool. If Ronimo likes a bot, it can find its way into the official game.

Overall, I highly recommend Awesomenauts. It has a thriving community that you should not miss out on. The gameplay is very fun, if less competitive than its other MOBA counterparts. All that is lacking is you.

I just really wish there would be an option for a "Mixed" review. This one would surely be one of them.
But since this is one of my most favourite games, I rather not hit the "Not recommended" cause that would make me feel bad. Let's say my review is a kind of warning for future players, as I will talk more about the disadvantages rather than the advantages.

This game, as the title already says is really, really Awesome, it has tons of potentials, in my eyes it beats Dota2 and even League of Legends (and I like the latter) just to mention the two most popular MOBAs which are kinda similar to Awesomenauts.

So the task is, you are in a 3v3 match, you with your two teammates have to defend your base on a battle arena which is also protected by 3 or 4 turrets, that's depending on the map. Both teams have 3-3 (or 4-4) turrets. There are various champions, characters, whichever you call them to choose from, and each and one of them has different, unique abilities. From the medic to the assassin, supports, tanks, you can find different classes, and even these little "types" have different selections. The background story is simple yet still enough for this game, the characters all have their own background stories and the design (even the most of the skins) are also amazing. So, everything is set up for a perfect game, what's wrong then?

Pretty much everything else. Sadly.

1 . Let's start with the matchmaking. Catastrophy. Horrific. A complete disaster. The game has no dedicated servers, so you pretty much have to wait until the matchmaking finds players from your region (and this one is preferred, or else you have to deal with laggers, and even with this set up you will probably meet them), sometimes it takes like, 5 minutes or even more. And when you are finally in a game which has not started earlier (and will be a losing match as you will get dropped into the place of angry ragequitters), you will probably have to deal with people who have higher ranks than you. And here comes the second most horrible thing;

2. The ranking system. I can't describe how it works, because I absolutely don't understand it. You can't choose to play or not play ranked matches like in LoL, you will be categorized into leagues, but the way you level up to higher leagues or get dropped back into the former seems to be really, really random. And if you get into higher leagues because out of your 20 matches you luckily won one, you have to deal with the bigger guys. And by bigger, I pretty much say guys with the highest ranks and prestige, becase those are the ones who I get mostly, even if I am in league 6, with prestige 1. I always, and no joke, always get enemies with max prestige, and league 3-4. Maybe even higher. I don't need to mention how do I end up.

3. The last, and probably the worst thing in this game is the "community", if I can call this a community. I have met a few communities before, but this game definitely has the worse, pretty similar to LoL I'd say. Your teammates calling you noob if you die once, your enemies tapping the taunt button more than M1, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s everywhere, trolls, ragequitters who leave you alone with bots, and enemies still taunting you. During this 70 hours I have met like, 1 or 2 nice random helpful players in this game, seriously. And there is no kickvote or ban system either.

4. I also want to mention how I disagree with the content what you have to pay for. Sure, a few skins to buy them, the devs need to eat something of course (no irony), but there are also characters what you can unlock only with using your debit card, pretty strong characters (I'd not call them p2w though) and instead of a few serious fixes or developing, the company seems to put all their efforts into the new skins and into some occasional bugfixes. Oh, and to nerf Voltar to be almost useless.

All in all what I can say about this game is that it is really addicting with its unique humour, gameplay and overall experience, but has so, so many backsides that it might not even be a benefit to play this game. Unless you have nerves made of ropes. I'd suggest the game for people who can be ignorant against trolls, can deal with stress easily, and like this genre.

(Also I am sorry for my grammar errors and typos, my English is not the best, and my typing is even worse.)
