TL;DR Version at the bottom for people who hate walls of text :D
I remember when I first saw this game for sale on the XBLA years ago (I was still a scrubby console gamer back then, please forgive me!), and my initial reaction was ‘Wow, this game looks absolutely dreadful’, I just didn’t get it! Luckily, I played this game on a whim, and I have to say, it blew me away!
But first, a bit about the game, it’s a 2D, 3v3 MOBA, currently consisting of a modest roster of 20 ‘Awesomenauts’ (20 is including the Expansion pack ‘Nauts, of which there are 4), where the goal is to destroy the enemies’ damage dealing, high health turrets, thankfully with the help of small damage absorbing droids, in order to destroy the enemies’ drill core, leading to a victory. Each player picks one of the aforementioned ‘Nauts to play as during the match, each with His/her own unique Autoattack and abilities. There is also a currency in this game called ‘Solar’ which allows you to upgrade your abilities. All of this is in the style of an 80’s Saturday morning cartoon show. Boom.
I love this concept (despite hating it initially :s), the 2D aspect of the game means that it requires a lot of platforming ability in order for you to be good at it, and honestly, it’s a very clever twist to the typical MOBA, and it’s made the game very refreshing for me. The graphics and soundtrack are equally invigorating, with some of my favourites being the character themes and killing sprees.
Additionally, this game isn’t short of diversity. Each ‘Naut brings something new to the table in the form of the aforementioned abilities, so, when you get bored of one character, you can play another for a short while, it never feels like you’re playing the same game twice! Furthermore, upgrades add to this diversity. There are 4 rows of upgrades for your abilities, with 6 of them per row, moreover, only 3 upgrades can be chosen in a match. This means that you can upgrade your character to suit your playstyle, adding a lot of strategic depth into the game.
The ‘Nauts themselves all have relatively interesting backstories and quirks, which is evident in their voice-acted lines when you play them. Granted, a few of the voices of the ‘Nauts are a bit hit-and-miss, sometimes leaving me questioning why ‘Naut X has Voice Y because it doesn’t suit them, and some of the voice lines are blatant attempts to badly cram a few well known memes and references into the game because apparently ‘It’s funny’ (Some of the references are well done and funny in my opinion, but I would like to see SOME original dialogue as opposed to a sea of memes).
However, my major problem with this game lies in its’ online aspect, Ronimo execute this poorly, from the god-awful matchmaking which will leave you in a 1v3 against a full L1 premade, to the matches against players with over 400 ping, making it near impossible to dodge them, let alone win against them, ‘Awesomenauts’ knows how to make you rage online. In balance terms, the game is O.K at the moment, there are OP and UP ‘Nauts at the moment, which is only natural, but there are none which I currently consider stupidly unbalanced, despite the massive ‘Coco Nebulon’ Meta at the moment. The community, I feel, has also been gaining a lot of toxicity recently, but there isn’t much we can do, people have become more experienced and competitive since its’ release, and as a result, players become a lot angrier at new or inexperienced players who play the game for fun, which is a worrying and saddening trend in the once calm and collected community.
The paragraph above makes it sound like this game is absolutely awful. It makes me want to hate it, but I simply can’t. For every rage-inducing game, there is a genuinely fun game that draws you back in, and that makes this game fun and addictive as hell (Granted, I have had to take a break from it twice for about a month because I was sick of all the Bull). This is without a doubt my favourite game, and I think my hours show that, and I would recommend this to anyone interested in getting into MOBA's. But I would recommend that you bring a couple of friends along for the ride, it’s so much easier to deal with its’ BS together. If you want to go into it by yourself, fine. But trust me, you will need a lot of patience with it in order to see past its’ shortcomings, and appreciate it for what it is.
TL;DR: Love the ‘Saturday morning’ cartoon style, as well as the soundtrack. Very diverse roster of Nauts with interesting backstories. Balancing is a bit meh. Voice acting can be a bit uninspired. Bad matchmaking and network coding may result in rage inducing matches, but the rest of the game is good enough to help you see past its’ flaws.
Final score: 8/10
