Awesomenauts is based on the premise of casual competition. It is designed to be fun. An interesting result of that is the lack of a real consequence when somebody quits your team. He is replaced by a bot that is often more competent than himself and continues to play in his stead. Another player can join mid-game to replace the bot at any time.

Awesomenauts also has a great community (official forum, not Steam). It has a thriving fanart community, a modding one, a tactics one, etc.

This game really opens itself up to modders. It allows creators to modify in-game bots and make their own using an AI editor. Modders can also create gamemodes using this tool. If Ronimo likes a bot, it can find its way into the official game.

Overall, I highly recommend Awesomenauts. It has a thriving community that you should not miss out on. The gameplay is very fun, if less competitive than its other MOBA counterparts. All that is lacking is you.

If DOTA and LOL isn't your cup of tea, please - try this one. It's unique 2D MOBA centered around aim, map awareness, teamplay and old-school platforming. The plethora of characters with unique skills (each naut has 2 main skills assigned to 2 buttons + AA, jump and team commands - it's that simple, yet hard to master) that really affects how the game is played and gameplay itself makes this game addictive and ton of fun. You can try different builds, every skill can be upgraded in a different way, same for AA and utility row (movement, more hp, regen etc.). Game is easy to learn, but can be frustating if you're not paying attention, however there's replay recording built in and you can see what your opponent bought and how he outplayed you.

The graphics are cute, if you don't mind "cartoonish". The characters are each unique in personality.
Hackers/cheaters are relatively rare.
The music by Sonic Picnic is exquisite. If you are going to buy anything from this, you should buy the soundtrack.
Unfortunately, this is where the fun ends.

Matchmaking is terrible, peer2peer technology which means that lag is abound. For some reason the matchmaker is still stuck in 1998 whereas it only offers you to search games by ever-reducing selection (worldwide, continent, local) instead of pairing you with others on the basis of latency/packetloss compatibilities and tolerance.

Moreover, the pairing of opponents based upon rank is seemingly non-existent whereas you may face a team of extreme aces with a couple of complete novices for teammates and vice versa, or mixed and so on.

Additionally, the game allows late joins. You may be one such lucky 'winner' as to be selected to join a game in progress, for the past twenty minutes, whereas all the players on the team you got tossed onto have quit the game and the opponents been pummeling on bots and becoming superiorly strong for the entire time.
You may even rake in the jackpot and join a game that a player has quite precisely five seconds before the base is destroyed and the game is over with a defeat for you (which you WILL take a dive in ranking for).

Think of many such fun small joyful defects the game is rife with.
Oh, and it is worth of mentioning to note that the community is chokeful with acidic terribly-behaved children (at least mentally). Which, of course, the developers pander to happily.

To top it all off, there is no semblence of balance. The disparity becoming fast evident and very wide in scale.
With some characters being exquisitely over the top whereas others are scrapping at the bottom. Some of them featuring extremely "cheesy" or "lame" easy methods of combining certain abilities/power-ups to either kill any opponent within mere seconds regardless of their strength/health/abilities or to escape out of any situation essentially becoming unkillable.

Some of the strongest characters are also locked behind a DLC pay-wall, effectively turning the game somewhat onto "pay2win" situation.

Watching plays as a spectator on youtube is also not very enjoyable, barring the game from any possible future as an e-sports entirely.

Until they fix the lag issues, I'm going to have to recommend that you don't get this game. There are no dedicated servers, so of course there's going to be lag. But at the same time the matchmaking will take people seemingly at random from other countries and pit them against one another. I really had a match where I, from the US, was teamed up with someone from Holland, and someone from Australia was on the enemy team. So there's lag, yes. So how does this affect gameplay?

Currently I only see matches with 200+ Ping. There are some characters with skills that are impossible to dodge if they lag (Coco Nebulon and Lonestar to name two). So these characters have a completely unfair advantage over others when lag inevetably comes into play. Part of the appeal of this game is the almost fighting-game-like brawls, and when you're playing splitscreen with your friends or you're in a private match with people on the same continent these brawls can be a blast. But let's say you remove your ability to dodge anything. Then the game devolves into a bunch of hit-and-run pot-shotting with a couple of current meta-pick characters. Even when I win now, I feel like I had a terrible time. Please, Ronimo, you had a great game, and it's gone to crap. Fix the lag issue. Whether it be better region-based match-making or dedicated servers, fix it. This could be such a great game if you had a better infrastructure. So, sadly, despite many hours invested in this game, I'm going to have to give it a thumbs-down.

If you DO plan on just playing with your friends or just split-screening against some bots, then this is an excellent game. It's a MOBA with style, not too much meta to memorize, and characters as varied and unique as you could want. But be warned: this is not a MOBA to be taken seriously until they fix the current issues.

Is this game fun, Well yes. BUT there are somethings that need to change in order for this game to truely be a good game.

Pros.
The game perfectly captures the moba spirit, but in a fast paced action platformer. Don't like RTS style constant clicking? Think there's not enough action in Dota or league of legends? This game has it.

Voice acting and soundtrack are great.
artstyle is nice and fresh

The game IS fun.

Negatives.

This game can not be competitive yet. There are numerous reasons why, but let's start off with the worst offenders.

1. There is no strategy to picking a character. None. There isn't a draft, so you can't see what the other team is going to pick. It's like Blind pick in league of legends. There's a reason for that mode not being ranked. If the other team happens to pick a character that counters yours, you're screwed the entire game.

I propose something like league of legends. Each team can ban 1 character, and they take turns picking their characters while the one they picked is shown to both teams. Until this is implemented, If you are looking for a serious competition, go look elsewhere.

2. The Paywall.
What Paywall? The expansion. I'm fine with them having an expansion. That isn't the issue. Here's the issue. Almost all of the expansion characters have a attack that passes through the turrets. Normally, you can use the turret as a shield to take some damage while you fight off the enemy team. A lot of the characters in the expansion have attacks that can go through said turret. nibbs, Penny, Ted McPain (in levels that have the turrets on top of the jungle area), sentry x58 has an attack that draws you in from behind the turret. You see where I'm going with this? Ok. So there are characters that can get you behind the turret. There must be one that can in the normal game too, right? Yeah, there is. One. Coco. So if you have the expansion, you can poke the heck out of anyone behind the turret, but if you just have the base game? Just pray there's a coco on your team or you're screwed because you can't touch them.

3. Joining late games.
The game has bots take over after someone leaves. That's awesome and well needed in other mobas. You know what isn't awesome? Other players can then join the game and replace these bots. I've had numerous times where I'd join a game, only to find out all the turrets were gone for us and the whole team had rage quit so I'm the only one there. A garenteed lose. Gee, thanks. Unfortunately this happens WAY to often. You get screwed just for wanting to play the game! If people still want that feature, fine. Put a switch in there that you can click and say "I only want to join NEW games. NOT games in progress." This sucks.

4. Disconnections. The game gives you a penalty for quiting the game. This is good. Unfortunately, You can't rejoin games that you have disconnected from. Internet goes down for a second? Congrats, you are now punished when you start another game. Game crashes? Punished. Fair, right? You should be able to rejoin games that you we disconnected from. Simple as that.

Summary:
This game is fun. I always have a good match or two when playing. But, because of these problems, I can't recommend this game. These issues need to be fixed before this game is good enough to recommend to anyone.
