How does a man reclaim his family? How does he return to the present-day future? How does he avenge his fallen partner? But more importantly, why does this Asian schoolgirl want to kill you? Answers to these questions, and all of life’s most philosophical quandaries in The Showdown Effect.

The Showdown Effect is a side-scrolling action game from Arrowhead Game Studios, creators of Magicka. This time around, the studio is focusing more on a competitive eSports approach. Combining parkour-style platforming and precision aiming, The Showdown Effect creates a menagerie of chaotic bullet fury, slick moves, great hair, and ostentatious blood sport. It has all the flair and witty humor one would expect from an Arrowhead game.

Controlled on a flat 2-D plane much like many games from yesteryear, Showdown’s unique feature is its precision aiming, requiring you to actually keep your mouse cursor over your targets to inflict damage. Most side scrollers only need you to aim in a general direction to hit targets, but Showdown‘s finely tuned aim separates the good players from the truly great players. It’s a mechanic like this that could have allowed the game to be a legitimate eSport. Some weapons can be spammed, such as the grenade launcher and throwing knives–this is when the platforming elements come into play. Skilled players are able to avoid such attacks while maintaining the dexterity to mow down their foes. The skill required to pull off such feats is what separates the game from other somewhat-competitive side-scrolling games like Smash Bros. Without these finely tuned features, the experience would be generic and bland. Like Smash but more skilled and less trash can button mashing.

There are many melee weapons like the katana that can be picked up throughout the maps. Each one has its own unique animation, damage, and timing. There are also many elevators and doors to allow for many sneaky tactics. Sometimes you just want to pick up a sack of flour and beat someone into a bloody mess. Or put all your weapons away and go straight kung fu on their ♥♥♥. This is the app for that.

As usual, Arrowhead is up to its old tricks, parodying pop culture with a clever-ish sense of humor. For instance, take the game’s best character, Dutch McClone. Dutch is basically every single Arnold Schwarzenegger character in history. Sent back in time after having his identity stolen, he now fights to recover his stolen identity and discover just exactly who did this to him and why. On top of all that, he has an Austrian accent and constantly declares that he’s just a kindergarten teacher.

Each character has their own unique ability that they can use in combat. Dutch’s ability renders him invincible for a few seconds or until he takes a certain amount of damage. This causes him to be the most picked character, which is fine, since there can be multiples of the same character in each match. It’s unfortunate, however, that the other characters’ special abilities aren’t as competitively appealing.

With four unique game modes, Showdown offers everything from free-for-all to team deathmatch. Right now free-for-all seems to be the primary focus. Every time a character dies, they respawn in a second or two, keeping a constant flow of action going. Before the match ends, the Showdown round begins, where everyone has one life to live in a last-man-standing climax. The winner of the Showdown round gets a score point bounty based on the amount of players in the match. The person with the highest score after the Showdown round is the match winner.

With so much replay value and charm, this is a game that’s almost impossible not to recommend. The marriage between humor and skilled gameplay makes it one of the most innovative games of the last decade. If you’re looking for a video game where a giant Megazord fights Godzilla in the background accompanied by an epic heavy metal song blaring at eleven, you might enjoy this.

The Showdown Effect is a multiplayer platformer shooting game with a fairly unique design. Decent game but it has no single player mode and its multiplayer is dead. Have a look at the player charts and you'll see what I mean.

This is a great game, but as sad as it is, i will have to leave a bad recommendation. It was just released at a bad time, when nobody cared about such type of games, and it didn't get the attention that it really should've, for various reasons (maybe they should've promoted the game actually). I honestly believe that the developers had to take some time, add even more content, modes and etc. But the game died within a year, as sad as it is. As you can see, a game "This war of mine" was released not long ago, and it's basically the same game as this, but with a different scenario. So i mean...the dev's of this game had all the opportunities in the world.
But I do hope, that one day they might release Showdown effect 2, which will be waay more better, and they will learn from their mistakes.
But for now, this game is not worth buying.

Great game, and it makes me genuinely sad that it died -- especially given that it was never truly alive.

Lots of fun if you pick up a few copies and play with a group of friends, but even then you're not that unlikely to experience problems where one or two people can't join the game for no apparent reason.

Great game, but can't in good heart recommend it since no one plays it anymore.
Unless you buy a four pack and play specifically with friends or whatever don't bother.

No players in servers. Game died a year ago; just after the first month from release. Devs, pls change this into free-to-play so we can see it alive again.

Shouldn't be sold anymore, no one playing and dev has stopped support. Has no local play, no bot support, no mods and you are still locked out of a bunch of characters and cosmetics that cost more money on top of game price.

AVOID!!

Fun, but I can't recommend it in good faith seeing as the community is dead and you'll never get a game going.

The core is solid and fun if you can play with someone else but I can see how the game's business model drove away players and now it's dead, deservedly so.

At least I got for free and now it has cards so that's nice!

I waited quite literally over 30 minutes for a ranked game, but it never started due to the essentially dead online community. Then I left the lobby/queue where I was literally the only person and it made me lose ranked rating.

Okay then.

Back in 2013, I would have recommended this game, but since then the devs have just abandoned it. If you really really want to play this game, get some friends to play it with you, otherwise walk way.

This game is dead. There normally are no servers and the only few (4 or so max) players online are 500+ hour players who'll only rekt you.

It would be better as a F2P or if the game had bots/singleplayer mode.

This game would be PERFECT for what its supposed to be but it had 2 fatal flaws
---Its multiplayer and lack of subtution
---Almost no dev support after this game was made
For the people that like ''forbidden fruits'' or mixed review games go get it or if you have friends that already own/play this game and will play this game with you by all means go get it,
Otherwise you should pass. I got it from a humble bundle so if you can score this game for a dollar and buy some extra copies to hand out you will have a blast!

This game was the best source of multiplayer craziness that I long for in a game. It's fast-paced insanity with old references that harken back to aged action movies like Terminator or the old character tropes like: "Cop that eats donuts and fights to avenge his partner" to "Scientist that experimented on himself, and fights to control his augmented body."

All the characters have a special ability and plenty of personality to make them feel fresh... (However some abilities are rather cheap) and there are plenty of different guns like pistols, snipers, rocket launchers, throwing knives, even swords! Still not enough tools of destruction? Well you can bash someone's head in with a prop you found on the level! See that pickaxe stuck in the wall? TAKE IT AND SLICE SOMEONE IN HALF WITH ONE CLEAN SWING! See that little cross with Jesus on it? PUNISH THE NONBELIEVERS! See that pillow on the couch? KILL THEM WITH THE ♥♥♥♥ING PILLOW

What's that? You wanna buy this game? Well then, I just have to say--

Please don't.

No, really don't. It's a waste. Look, I know I just went on briefly about how I like the game, hell I've spent quite some time in it, and every 2 days I check the game news to see if they've announced anything because I loved it so much. But it's dead. Like... SUPER dead. Nobody plays this game, and if someone IS playing, they're so good it isn't even funny. It's just sad that they've spend so much time being good at a dead game.

I still think this is the best multiplayer action game ever, but unfortunately it's dead. And Arrowhead pulled their support from the game, so it's gone for good. Stay away from this game.
