The year is 2051. Location: SATAZIUS, a long-abandoned planet.

The cruiser Agano was on patrol when it was attacked and stricken by a confederacy of space pirates that had established a base on SATAZIUS. The pirates attacked the Agano intending to steal the assault ship ‘Trafalgar’ that was stowed aboard the Agano, but the Trafalgar made a successful emergency escape.

The crew of the Trafalgar calculated the probability of successfully escaping the pirate overrun planet at 0.02%; the probability of charging into and successfully destroying the pirate base was 1%. Taking the higher probability escape plan, the crew of the Trafalgar turned their ship toward the pirate horde and began their charge into the heart of SATAZIUS.

SATAZIUS is an awesome old school side-scrolling arcade shooter by accomplished indie developer ASTRO PORT (Gigantic Army, Armed Seven, Supercharged Robot Vulkaiser), featuring an arsenal of 13 types of upgradeable weapons, power-ups, obstacles and boss encounters that arcade veterans will enjoying getting to grips with. Customize your ship by selecting two side weapons which can be cycled and deployed at any time during the action, and a charge attack to unleash massive destruction.

Like Gradius? Like shooting every single thing that comes on the screen and smiling in satisfaction as they easily go "boom"?

Then get this game. For $6, it's a pretty solid and fun Shmup game that keeps me coming back. Although not nearly as punishing as Gradius, it's more of an introductory-type thing for someone who isn't a huge fan of how teeth-grinding other shmups are. Don't be fooled by my playtime on here, on my old steam account I had 13+ hours on this damn game. Lots of weapons and customization, great replay value, and some REALLY fun bosses. Graphics, however, are pretty decent- but it's always satisfying to see things explode.

My only complaints? You can almost instantly kill the majority of the bosses with your 'charge' power (especially on easy mode) and the level designs really aren't that great. Also, a more engaging soundtrack wouldn't hurt, as I find myself getting bored with it after a while. Don't get me wrong- it's chill, but a bit too chill for my tastes.

It's great fun for people who like casual shmups and are looking for a pretty easy and chill one. If you're looking for a hard, punishing game that'll hand your ♥♥♥ back to you on a decor silver platter with fancy raspberry sauce and a cherry ontop, skip this one.

Very solid Shmup. Uses elements from major other games like R-Type, Gradius or Salamander, and uses them very well. The difficulty is suited for everyone. and the level design is quite close to Gradius V, but adds a little something to it. I loved the boss fights.

Satazius is a fairly standard spaceship shooter. While it's far from the quality of a Tecnosoft or Toaplan shmup, it's still pretty fun and worth a few bucks if it's on sale. The level design varies from stupidly easy to cheap and frustrating, the graphics are dull, and the music is bland, but if you're desperate for a shmup, you could do far worse.

A decent side scroller bullet hell game, which kinda serves a Gradius clone

It has a different system that you can change and level up weapons, the game play does have its moments which is really neat. though doesn't have the Gradius charm, but it does serve as a great game in my opinion

Simply put, this gem is a blast from the past. With it's Sega Megadrive-style graphics and classic arcade 16-bit console gameplay, this is pure uncomplicated fun. The shoot em up genre has become obsessed with bullet-hell type of games. So, Satazuis avoids this by being just a high action, but well structured game.

The game does borrow from classics like R-Type, Gradius and others. But it stands up in it's own right. It even allows you to save your replays, so you can relive those moments when you was zoning, dodging bullets like Neo from the Matrix.

This is a fun game, just honest and true 16-bit/arcade style action. Buy with confidence.

Good old fashioned shoot 'em up action, can't go wrong. Feels like a combination of Gradius and Metal Black personally. A head's up if you're playing with a keyboard though; the Z key is confirm. It'll save you staring at the main menu screen wondering what to do~

Pretty fun shooter game from the people who would later bring us Gigantic Army. A decent variety of weapons (that are upgradable), cool level design and retro-style graphics make this a good shooter. There's one thing that bothers me, though: WHY CAN'T YOU PAUSE THE GAME WITH THE CONTROLLER?

Challenging, fun and cool as ♥♥♥♥, Satazius is one of thoses games that are perfect for shorts and longs playthroughs.
If you're a fan of thoses classics "planes that go pew pew" on the arcades, you're gonna love this game!

I would recommend Satazius to both fans of the genre and curious newcomers.

Satazius takes the best elements of older games like Gradius and other horizontal shoot-em-ups and improves on them, whilst at the same time jettisoning the bad.

Let's take the weapon system. In Gradius the player could choose their ship build at the start of a credit, while in Satazius the player also gets that opportunity at the start of each level, allowing them to select the best tool for the job at the right moment. Weapons are powered up in a similar way to Gradius, though here each weapon remains powered up as you switch between them. This gives the player the option of focusing on just a select few favourites, or else improving a wider range of weapons at a slower rate. Spreading the love, as it were. Upon death, the player is not stripped of all power like in those unforgiving arcade shmups of yore; instead their weapons are just downgraded a few notches. This means death is not a double punishment, and failing once does not mean you're twice as likely to fail on the next try.

The levels are full of exciting set pieces, high speed chases and environmental hazards. Indeed, the environment is as much your enemy here as the enemies themselves, reminding me fondly of another classic horizontal shmup, Thunderforce III.

Which is a good point to turn to Satazius' few bad points. In those high speed sections the player simply cannot survive if their ship is not a fast one, whereas in tight quarters a nimble ship is easy to crash. The player should be able to switch at will, a la Thunderforce III, rather than having indirect control through power-ups.

And secondly, the music doesn't match the catchy melodies of the above mentioned games, or so many other old-school shmups. But it suffices. That would have just been the cherry on the top of an already inviting cake.

You're basically forced to play this game in windowed mode.There is an option to go fullscreen but the display is oversized and you lose at least 10% of the display outside the screen. A glaring oversight that should have been fixed (easily) long before release and still has not been fixed. The developers should be ashamed of themselves for this. For this reason I can't recommend this game.

This game is aiight. Not great, but not bad either. Some things that bugged me:

-- It's basically one hit and you're dead. You can get a shield that allows you to take one extra hit, but that's the most you can get.
-- There's no way to pause mid-game.
-- There's no graphics settings whatsoever.
-- The graphics reminded me of the Super Nintendo. I guess that's cool, if that's your thing.
-- Sometimes there can be so many explosions going off at the same time that it can be difficult to keep track of where you are.
-- You can definitely tell that this is an arcade port. You get 10 continues for the whole game session. If you don't beat the game without using them all, then you go back to square one.

Like I said, it's an okay shoot 'em up. I had fun playing it, but the points listed above made it a little frustrating too. It didn't outright suck, so I guess I recommend it.

If you like Gradius, you'll like this game. I don't have much to say, but it works nicely, it has good variation, it's not just a clone of Gradius, but it has alot of variations and unique weapons and enemies to fight. You'll also have a good bout of difficulty to deal with, although you'll quickly find some of your weapons to be absurdly broken. Regardless, I recommend this little gem. The guys behind this game and its brother game Gigantic Army are really good at their jobs.
