“...playing is winning, and there’s something quite satisfying about leading your house to power and glory through whatever means you can, for as long as you can.”

“In short, Crusader Kings II is a majestic feudal sandbox, the greatest generator of hilarious medieval soap opera ever created and Paradox Interactive’s best title to date.”
90/100 – IncGamers

“It's perfectly possible to have made a few too many enemies, anger the Pope and find most of Europe out for your blood. That's really what makes the game so damn fun.”

About This Game

The Dark Ages might be drawing to a close, but Europe is still in turmoil. Petty lords vie against beleaguered kings who struggle to assert control over their fragmented realms. The Pope calls for a Crusade to protect the Christians in the Holy Land even as he refuses to relinquish control over the investiture of bishops - and their riches. Now is the time for greatness. Expand your demesne and secure the future of your dynasty. Fill your coffers, appoint vassals, root out traitors and heretics, introduce laws and interact with hundreds of nobles, each with their own agenda.
A good lord will always need friends to support him. But beware, as loyal vassals can quickly turn to bitter rivals, and some might not be as reliable as they seem... Stand ready, and increase your prestige until the world whispers your name in awe. Do you have what it takes to become a Crusader King?

At the age of 21 I had lost count at 25 lovers, and I had 16 legitimized ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s (I didn't legitimize the ones with birth defects). This didn't sit well with the cuckolded kings of Christendom however, and I was promptly assassinated. I left my mark in more ways than one though, because now they all have herpes. I live on in the memories of the Frankish and Lombard kings; every time they feel the itch they think of me.

I was at the top man.

I had it all. Concubines, soldiers, loyal vassals, mercenaries, all the indulgences a human life could need and all the assurance I could want of my entrance into the afterlife.

Yes, the good old King of Ireland was ready to form the Empire of Brittania at the ripe old age of 59.

But then my son died and then I died and I lost the game. Never have I ever been so destroyed by a game. 10/10.

I was playing with my friend the other day. He was a dashing young duke and I was an ugly 50 year old German count with an ugly 16 year old wife.

I seduced my friend's wife and got her pregnant. I got to hear him yelling about some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ getting her pregnant behind his back for a year before she gave wife and told him about me. He tried to revoke my titles, I kicked his ♥♥♥ and let him have white peace.

Over the next 10 years, I simultaneously had 11 lovers:
The Queen of England
The Holy Roman Empress
The Byzantine Empress
The Queen of France
The Queen of Poland
The Queen of Bulgaria
The Queen of Scotland
The Queen of Norway
The Queen of Denmark
The Queen of Sweden
The Queen of Croatia

Finally I died of stress, but by then it was already too late. I had assassinated the heirs to every kingdom and empire, and my secret royal ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ children were set up to inherit every throne in all of Europe.

Every single one of my children was betrothed to one of their secret ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ half-sisters and half-brothers, leading to an entire generation of my family line that was inbred to the point that they were entirely useless.

10/10

Got married to a commoner. Had a son. Wife died. Got remarried. Sister plotted against me. Imprisoned and executed her. Had a daughter. Got paranoid. Tried to lock up my son and daughter. Son got away and declared war on me. I spent 3 years chasing down my 1 year old son trying to defeat him in battle.

I was crowned king of Africa at the age of one and had to go into hiding becasue of a plot to kill me. On my 16th birthday I came out of hiding and seduced the woman who was leading the plot to kill me. She fell in love with me, so I invited her to join my court. The day she arrived she was thrown in the dungeon and had to watch as I killed off her co-plotters one by one. Once all the plotters were dead, she had my baby. I raised her just as any of my other childern and had my lover/prisoner excuted shortly after. All in all probably the best sweet sixteen ever.

Dear Diary,

Day 1, I played CK2 as a Viking Lord in Norway. I was able to get FedualisAm and reformed Religion. 65 years old and on death door I was able to get Primogeniture passed as a tribe and formed kingdom of sweden and norway.

Day 2, Today the throne was passed to me by my father. I was able to take over Finland and Denmark to create an empire.
Found a new home in England and that will be the target of my son.

Day 3, My father was a viking berserker, He lead an army of 5000 men charging toward 3000 skirt troop but he was manage to get surranded and killed. I got on the throne just 14 years old and I will probably rule it a long time.

Day 4, I am still on the throne and now i am now 70 years old. A lot things happened and United Kingdom is now under viking Banner and I am still a bit short of forming the wendish empire. It's Already midnight here so a new day will start.

Day 5, It's pass mid night and i will play until i pass the throne to my son. as 70 I will need to slow down and manage my titles, county and Duchy well. Time to be a bit ruthless tyrant and once I die all bad behavior will be washed away.

PSSSSttt.. I am now 83 years old.. Why won't i die? All the vassal are extramly unhappy with me taking duchy, Banish overpowered lord. I had to bribe people regulary. Murder over powerful faction member. And forget about Fabricate Claims I need it to keep my subject happy.

MAARARAFDAAS... I am now 93 years old.. I accepted the fact that i won't die anytime soon And it's 5:30 in the morning already.

Meh.. This is a review? Not a Diary? Why are you Staring at my story.., Buy the game and start your own story.

Update:
A little update to the fun fact.. he finnaly died at 95. then the heir was 75 and died with the year then the heir was 59 and already mained and ill. He died in 3 month. Now i am playing as a 2 year old infant. Wow. I love this game.

Incest simulator ?
This is the title that many jokingly have given this game on the internet.
However this far from what the game is, can you perform incest, yes, however the deepth and dynamics goes far beyond mere incestual relations.

Main purpose or goal?
You are the head of a dynasty, at the beginning of the game, you can choose which dynasty, and who within that dynasty that you want to play as.
Do you want to take control of one of the powerful rulers of the mighty Karling dynasty?
Or do you want to repeat history by trying to bring a small count in Switzerland from an obscure family known as Habsburg to their glory, as Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, and spread the Habsburg from there on.

With the customize ruler DLC you expand you game a thousandth-fold, you will have to power to not only choose who you want to play as, but you can create you whole new dynasty and ruler. Want a genius hunchback who rules over the Arabian Empire?
Do you want to try and backstab your way to the top of the Byzantine Empire with a powerful spy?
It is up to you!

There is one indicator on how well you have done, that is your Score which the game at the end compare with other great historical dynasties. You increase your score by having rulers with high prestige and piety, but also having other dynasty members in high positions, will generate prestige to your dynasty, giving newborn a higher starting position in life, when it comes to their prestige.

There are so many DLCs!
Many seem to get overwhelmed by the amount of DLCs this game has, however many of those are cosmetic DLCs, adding other graphics or sounds to the game.

The main DLCs that expand gameplay are:

I will rank them, with the top being the most important expansion to get first, by my own opinion.

  1. Ruler Designer - This will enable you to create your own ruler, only your imagination will limit the replayability of the game.
  2. Legacy of Rome - This expansion not only gives more deepth to the Orthodox rulers of the Byzantine, and greek cultures, it also provides new game mechanics, such as military retinues. (Also allow the possibility for castrating and blinding prisoners playing as a ruler of the Byzantine culture group)
  3. The Old Gods - This enable you to play the game from 867 CE, and also make Pagans and Zoroastrian rulers playable.
  4. Sword of Islam - Makes muslims playable, as The Old Gods each unique religion has its own mechanics.
  5. Sons of Abraham - Adds more deepth to the abrahamic faiths and also Judaism. Heresies for religions are also possible.
  6. The Republic - Want to try out the merchant life of Venice? With this DLC that will be possible, take control of a patrician family, amass wealth and control the trade zones around the shores of the known world.
  7. Charlemagne - Introduces a new starting time, at 769 CE, gives you the option to create custom Kingdoms and Empires.
  8. Rajas of India - Allows for control of the Indian rulers.
  9. Way of Life - Focus the life of your ruler towards certain areas of his life, want to became a great hunter to catch the fable white bear? Or became the greatest architech in the whole realm?
  10. Customization Pack - Customize your ruler ingame, change the beard, hair style, even the dynasty name or shield.
  11. Sunset Invasion - If you want to add an extra level of crazy to your game, only recommended for veteran players of CK2, what if the Aztec discovered Europe first? And decided to invade?
  12. Save Game converter - If you own Europa Universalis IV and want to continue your saga from CK2, this DLC will enable you to export your CK2 game into EU IV.

All the other DLCs are cosmetical.

Mods!

Crusader Kings 2 has more mods, that will expand your game, one of the more popular mods is a total conversion into a Game of Thrones universe. Where you can encounter spoilers from the series, but it will also make you play out the stories in George R.R. Martin's universe in another direction, should Tyrion Lannister have the Iron Throne?

Learning curve?
It has a steep learning curve, and the ingame tutorial only scratches the surface of possibilities. I would recommend picking up the game, and play with a friend online, or experiment as a count in Ireland.

But when you get a hang on it, it will grab you, and pull you deeper into a world of intrigue, murder, war, romance, and much more. In an forever going struggle for power over the realm, and the world.
