BE AWARE, THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE ORIGINAL Q.U.B.E. IT HAS A DIRECTOR'S CUT NOW WHICH HAS A DIFFERENT SOUNDTRACK AND STORY!
QUBE is a good but not incredible puzzle experience. It's fun, it's not too stressful (none of the puzzles are timed or will kill you), it's got a good mostly ambient soundtrack, it's not too hard (there's a couple stumpers in there, but they're not too bad if you experiment a bit), and it has some nice visuals. Oh, and there's a few secrets you can hunt out in the game. Now, there's good and there's bad. The game focuses on the puzzles, and setting you up so you can work your way through them in a challenge of wits. The bad is that it lacks a story. The ending kind of explains what you were up to, but not really. Another downfall is that the game is short-lived. Yeah, it lasts a few hours and yeah it has time-trials to check out, but it still feels like there could have been more. One more downfall is that only the last 3 sectors (5-7) are really challenging. Sectors 1 and 2 are an absolute breeze. Sector 3 and 4 make you pay attention. Sectors 5-7 make you trully sit down and work at the puzzles. Finally, I feel like they actually should have fleshed out some of the areas better. Most areas don't seem to have much of a purpose.
So in conclusion, is it a game worth playing? I feel so. It's one of those things that wraps you in for a little while, and is a worthwhile experience, but not something with tons of replay value or background story to keep you vested in it past your playthrough. Still, I'm not a huge puzzle player, and this game made puzzling fun! 7/10
