Warlock:Master Of Arcane

Admired for it's simplicity, Warlock:Master of Arcane is just that 4X Turn-Based type of game that keeps you hooked for hours and hours.
The 4X sub-genre of strategy games scares away all but hardcore strategy fans and the infinitely patient. Basic things, like combat and resource management, may be familiar to RTS fans, and the turn-based nature won't bother RPG fans. However, the level of micromanagement and diplomacy can be overwhelming for newcomers who aren't familiar with the likes of Civilization and Master of Orion. Paradox saw how difficult it would be for new players to jump into a popular 4X strategy game and offered help with Warlock: Master of the Arcane, a strategy game that seems designed to ease players into the genre.

Interestingly, the game gives the player no real backstory. From the online instruction book and the description on Steam, you know that the lands of Ardania (from the Majesty game series) have been chaotic since the last king died over 70 years ago. The gods feel that the time is right to appoint one of the High Mages as the next ruler. With seven mages vying for the role, your job is to have that mage obliterate everyone else and take the throne.

-Quick Review-
Warlock - Master of the Arcane is a turn-based strategy game, like many strategy games, the longer you play, the more elaborate the tactics get, and the longer your turn gets as your control over the world increases!
...or you get constantly bombarded by random world events and you can't expand because you're fighting off hoards of giants, dragons, undead, and random quest heroes.

-Detailed breakdown review-
Story: Welcome to Adrania, maybe you've been here before, maybe this is your first visit, regardless welcome, welcome. This land has appeared in numerous games, the first game I played in the series was "Majesty Gold Edition".
In this game, you are one of (X) amount of Mages/Warlocks, depending on the world size you may have more or less mages/AI/NPC's in the game. The more AI the more competition in the game. (But on the flip side, the more people fighting back the wild landscape... and trust me, it's wild)

Game Play: Starting with the most basic explanation about the game play, you have Hex's which represent segments of the land, very similar other strategy games, some hex's increase gold, food, or magic... while others are just taking up space, or even reduce values.
I compare this game to one of the Civilization games except that you're fighting with magic instead of science, and the "Rock, Paper, Scissors" game of Land, Air, and Water units. It is now more like "Rock, Paper, Scissors, TNT, Chuck Norris, God"; There's magic that you can cast, there's magic units, heroes which can be equipped with better armor and weapons, you can upgrade them with gold, in addition to the typical "ship, flying, and land" units.
I need to point out I haven't played the multiplayer yet. However, after looking it up, the game doesn't have "simultaneous turns", so the multiplayer will be at an even slower pace. You probably don't want to get into a very large game, smaller skirmishes so you can play the game for a day... ...instead of spanning over several weeks.

Achievements: There are no steam achievements for Warlock - Master of the Arcane.

Price: Warlock - Master of the Arcane is priced at $24.99. For me personally, strategy games have always had a high value because I play them long and really enjoy the challenge. I won't lie, I picked this game up for free from Humblebundle, but this game on a 50% or better sale is definitely worth it.

Conclusion: The first time I played Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim (released in 2000), was when I was in highschool, I had no idea that there were more games from the same universe! So once I heard the announcer's voice I thought "NO WAYYYYYY!!!!" I'm happy to have returned to Ardania!
As I said earlier in my review, this game is basically Civilization with Magic. While it's not the most well made strategy game out there, there's definitely enough fun stuff you can do in the game to keep you entertained for a long time. I find myself thinking "okay... one more turn, then I'll go to bed" And just keep telling myself that for another hour.
I recommend this game for standard strategy game fans, Chances are if you like Civ5, you can pick up this game... but you will find Civilization has been made much better and tighter fitting then Warlock - Master of the Arcane.
