It's a gift and not the kind of game im usually playing, but it's not a bad game.
Got some variety n the gameplay, various weapons and stuff with a place for a bit of exploration and replayability.

This game had a lot of potential, and I was pretty excited for a Star Trek game. Sadly, I found it quite lacking in many areas, and the most disappointing thing was this game could have been so much better. While the in-game characters do have a good resemblance of who they are supposed to be, this may be just about the only good thing of the graphics in this game - while graphics do not make or break a game, this game does not look like a 2013 release. The animations don't look good, especially the moving and when you need to do something with your partner like "pry open doors".

The "stealth" and shooting is nothing special for a third-person shooter, just different in the form of Star Trek weapons - I guess the alternate fire is somewhat interesting... The minigames including hacking, and bypassing are stale and boring, and the linear level design make the game a chore to play through. Figuring out what needed to be done was more frustrating than fun, and after succeeding, I only felt like "phew, now I can move on". Except that half the time, I couldn't! Game breaking bugs, especially in single player where your partner gets stuck or can't move, or the objective itself is bugged, forcing your to restart the checkpoint if you're lucky, or the entire chapter if you're not. The jumping mechanics and the collision detection are also pretty poor and quite frustrating.

The plot was nothing special, and I find myself playing through it for the sake of completion rather than a desire to know what happens next, as good games will do to me. The game is slow, long, and tedious... not fun and enjoyable. Not even sure whether the co-op would make this game any more worthwhile...

Will be uninstalling as soon as I finish enough of the achievements that I can be bothered getting. Would not recommend buying.

It's been a while since this game came out and I can say that I haven't had a problem with it! There was an animation glitch, once, I think. I have gone through the game several times, using different strategies and weapons. The side objectives as well as the acheivements curate to true star trek fans, and the overall gameplay can be entertaining to anyone. The puzzle solving is neat, helps break up the action (or stealth, depending on how you are playing). The multiplayer didn't work for the first week after the game was released, and that is where most (not all) of the negative comments came from, but my wife and I patiently waited, and played through it after that ordeal was worked out with Steam. It envokes the spirit of the new movies, looks fantastic, and gives you some familiar TOS throwbacks as well, like name-drops (Decker?!) and location-hints that Trekkies should listen for. A lot of time and effort was obviously put into this game. Now that it's dropped in price, more people who were iffy about getting it because of the initial negative reviews and outrage over multiplayer, should get this game and see for themselves that: it's actually pretty great.

+ nice presentation, high quality cutscenes, good voice acting, high production values in general
+ sci-fi setting in the star trek universe, immersive atmosphere, generic but interesting story
+ gameplay wise there is a lot of action in 3rd person mode, covering, stealth play that is average at best, skill tree where you unlock abilities and skills, playing mini-games to open doors or take control of droids etc, there is also some exploration that you would expect in this kind of games in order to find documents and logs that help unfold the story
+ i guess it's nice to play coop, the game was designed for coop, i just didn't try it since i prefer to play these games solo

- some game breaking bugs, mainly the coop character being stuck at doors or enemies floating in the air etc where you have to restart checkpoint since you can't proceed
- generic action gameplay, little variety in guns that also feel overpowered, easy enemies in general
- the mini-games although interesting at start, lack variety and feel monotonous fast in the game
- the game give emphasis to stealth play, but it is basic at best and the enemy al poor as well

in conclusion, i found the game much better than what i expected from the very bad reviews on the internet, there are many worse games out there, at least the atmosphere and presentation are good and i recommend it at least to the star trek fans.

So many people giving this game bad reviews. I disagree, this game was amazing! I played with a friend of mine and we are both huge star trek fans. The coop gameplay was awesome, and the skydiving and space diving levels were so much fun we ended up going back just to play them again. The dialog between the characters, mostly spock and kirk was very enjoyable. We even to this day quote some of their lines to each other just because they were that awesome! Having the main cast actually voice their own characters is pretty amazing. Some people complain because some of the character's voices were recording over a phone call. Who cares... Its the actual actor and original voice that is being brought to the game. On a scale of 1 to 10 i would give this game a 9 out of 10. Simply because it should have been longer, and it would have been cool to battle more enemies than just the gorn.

I played through the campaign in CO-OP with a friend of mine, and enjoyed it. It was worth the $5 admission for each of us, for sure. However, I don't expect to ever go back to it.

PROS:

It's CO-OP
8-10 hour campaign

CONS:

Plenty of glitches, but nothing game-breaking.
The score audio level fluctuates a lot, which makes it hard to enjoy its greatness

Unlike many of the film-to-video-game adaptations "Star Trek - The Video Game" is not exactly the video game version of the 2009 smash hit Star Trek film. While all members of the crew are returning they embark on a different mission. They try to uncover the mysteries behind a so-called Helios device - Vulcans and the Gorn (lizard-like creatures) are both involved. This is one of the reasons I like the game much as it offers a completely new storyline with the returning cast.

All actors have been motion captured and not only does the game provide the same looks but the same people did the voice acting for their characters. The funny dialogues are also returning whether it'd be the laughable accent of Chekov or Mr Scott's techno mumbo-jumbo or just the usual, ceaseless arguments Kirk has with Spock.

I'm sure the game is fun with a coop partner, too, but I completed it in solo only. I picked Kirk and the A.I. accompanied me in the shoes of Spock without fault. Assistance between the players consists of hacking doors or computers together and of course using different weapons in battles can be of great help.

Gameplay is not all about shooting: stealth sequences appear regularly and usually extra XP can be obtained by completing a section this way. These secondary objectives are called commendations and not only them but the many researchable items, audio logs scattered across the environment yield XP that can be used to upgrade weapons and our protagonists' tricorder.

The tricorder can be a great weapon in good hands. Its upgrades allow you to generate noise thereby confusing enemies as to where exactly you are located. You can also jam enemy weapons - this is pretty useful when fighting brutes. Hacking turrets from a distance is also possible with it and once a robot joined your side the outcome of a battle is guaranteed. Also, the tricorder is a must if you want to look for collectibles - only with this device can you spot and activate them. Some of the audio logs are hilarious - my favourite is the one where Bones complains about the life on Star Trek which is full of danger as Kirk always rushes headlong into the next journey.

While graphics are generic they serve their purpose. Our heroes are recognisable and the accompanying sound effects and orchestrated music are exactly the things a Trek fan can expect from such a game. The game can be completed in a mere 10 hours - this is not exactly long but for the missing collectibles, achievements and additional difficulty settings you can always do a 2nd or 3rd playthrough.

While reviews of this game are mixed on Steam I do believe the title is worth the purchase. If 15 euros is too much then wait for a discount so that picking this one up will not be a question.

Great game, especially for fans of the "Star Trek" franchise. It may feel generic or bland to others, but as a "Star Trek" fan, this game felt amazing for me. It includes a great voice cast and has a gameplay style similar to the "Mass Effect" and "Uncharted" franchises. I had already owned this game on PlayStation 3 when I purchased it on here and I felt that it was worth it, to beat it again. Chris Pine leads the cast as the alternate reality Captain James T. Kirk, with the rest of the cast reprising their roles as his crew members. I recommend picking it up, especially on sale, as it is as I write this, for $3.74.

Just so you know the perspective of this review:
I am a fan of
TOS, TNG and JJ Abram's recent (Star Trek) movies
Before playing this game, I had watched both movies, many, many times. (I watched ST Into Darkness twice over the course of this game)
I did not know that the game was meant to bridge the two films, I figured that out during the game.

Firstly, the camera movements (non-cutscene) are unusually fast (maybe just my insane sensitivity, maybe the game), and make the surroundings blurry momentarily (FYI I used a Xbox 360 controller which is supported(but no changing the button layout)) so if you puke ridiculously easy, be wary. Second (I played as Kirk) sometimes Spock would get stuck somewhere, but that usually didn't hinder me, when doing an action (like a co-op hack) he would magically be behind me, ready to help. Not really a spoiler(just saying a gun that is used), just a tip/un-glitch trick At some point in the game, you use a gun that teleports, after using it, keep aiming where you shot, I don't know if that is what fixed my bug, but that is what I think I did, which made it work. ( I reloaded that checkpoint ~7 times) Third, some parts of the game got kinda dry/repetitive, but it never got boring. Fourth, I, being a big fan of TOS, enjoyed seeing more of the early Kirk & Spock duo. Also, I enjoyed the plot and story of the game, basically completing it in one sitting.

If you despise the new Star Trek content/universe and can't deal with the occasional bug, I would recommend becoming a fan and realizing that games cannot be perfect.

However; If you are a Star Trek fan; I recommend getting this game, especially if you have a big screen and a controller (this game feels somewhat like a movie)

While I have not quite finished it yet, I would be shocked if any major revelations come along in the next couple hours of gameplay to change anything in this review.

Pretty much all the reviews are right. This game is awesome and awful at the same time. If you don't have someone to play it co-op, stop reading now and just don't buy it. With co-op, it's a JJ-Star-Trek-Themed Gears of War clone that does manage to entertain the same way that MST3K does, really.

As of this writing, the game is certainly playable and we've encountered only one major bug that required restarting a checkpoint. The most shocking thing when we started playing is the voice actors being the cast of the Abrams' movies, was not expecting that.

The gameplay is Gears of War light, for sure. You have your phaser and one other weapon. You can unlock upgrades and equip one from each of various skills, but most are pointless and after a couple levels the XP is equally meaningless. You get XP by Tricordering various flora, fauna, weapons, and, for some reason, stalagmites (because we certainly don't have THOSE on Earth). So if you are a lore junky you'll have boundless XP to use at least.

Primarily, you just cover and shoot your way through everything. The game is never anywhere near as hard as anything in GoW, aside from a couple boss segments that maybe aren't so much hard as questionably designed. When knocked into recovery mode, you seem to just get up on your own after a while most of the time if your partner is too busy being mauled to scan you back to your feet (as one does).

There are "stealth" sections which basically amount to 1: don't shoot anyone from the front and 2: use the crawlspaces. They are almost all, fortunately, completely optional and it is usually way easier and way more fun to just be a jerk and gun down everything. Again, the bonus xp you would earn from these stealth segments is largely pointless so that isn't really a factor.

The various hacking minigames are almost interesting and fairly harmless, but the flying / dodging minigames are largely annoying and needless.

To sum up: It's definitely worth the $3 I paid for it for the co-op experience with my brother. If you have someone to play it with like that, and you like GoW covered in Abrams Lens Flare Paint, then go ahead and grab it on sale. Otherwise, skip it.

1.5 years/3-year mission

P.S. The Gorns are jerks, seriously. Knock it off you guys.

Really fun co-op game. It can be a little clunky at times but it's genuinely fun; lots of great teamwork moments, lots of (fairly) amusing dialogue between the characters and enough upgrades and weapons to keep it interesting.

It is an interesting game with good graphics and simple gameplay. I advise you to play with a friend in co-op. As there are bugs. The plot is uninteresting, perhaps fans will appreciate this universe. I advise to buy for the sake of the cooperative.

Its your standard 3rp person shooter with a star trek theme, you take cover and shoot, sometimes you can use stealth.
Its fun when played with a friend in coop, playing solo gets boring fast, the story is decent (if you enjoy the new movies)

There are a lot of glitches in the game, people getting stuck, animations messing up etc, the AI aint that great either.

If you are a fan of star trek you should try it out when its on sale.

I recommend Star Trek ONLY IF you play co-op with a friend, otherwise DON'T BOTHER. We've all seen the videos of the horrible bugs and glitches with single player in this game. Playing co-op has a few bugs too, but at least playing with a friend is a far better experience than playing with a ♥♥♥♥♥ A.I. and the bugs weren't make-or-break the game. An occassional freeze or got stuck in a turbolift. I played this around launch, so I don't know if the experience has improved since debut.

My friend and I played this together and beat the game on normal. Both of us are Star Trek fans, and enjoyed the game overall. A few missions were frustrating or a bit difficult to figure out. The story is OK if you like the JJ Abrams' Star Trek. It's not the greatest tale ever told, but it's decent for Star Trek filler. Graphics are good and the character/voice-acting is superb; funny too. It's a game that does feel like an extension to the movie because it's actually a good "movie". I'd almost rather forget the game parts and just watch the cut-scenes.

So some of the downsides: the combat is a basic third-person shooter with cover tactic. The enemy A.I. is rather dumb too. The upgrades don't really help you too much. Many of the mission objectives are kind of repetitive... go here, activate this, etc. The teamwork stuff is very simple (open a door, lift one another up, etc.), and some of the more interesting game mechanics ought to have been used for more than just for a single mission. Oh and yeah, those sometimes annoying game glitches which should have been caught if properly game tested.

Like I said, play it with a friend together. It's a mostly enjoyable experience if you don't mind a bit of easy gameplay and minor frustration. DO NOT buy if you intend to play single player only.

Let's get this out of the way first: It isn't perfect.

Do I still recommend it? Absolutely.

For $15 you get a interesting story that takes two old enemies from the "prime" Star Trek universe/timeline and twisted them up into one new fearsome foe threathening the entire galaxy of this Star Trek alternate-timeline. Add to this story heavily borrowed mechanics from games such as Deus Ex Human Revolution, Batman: Arkham Asylum/City and the Gear of War series and you have solid gameplay as well.

Your choice of playing as either Kirk or Spock won't matter much wether you play solo or co-op. The main difference is in the standard/primary weapon that you use, with Kirk having mainly his captain's phaser pistol and Spock having a Vulcan repeater by default. Both work slightly different buth are capable of the same result (to kill or stun).

All the characters are voiced by the actual actors that reprised these characters in the movies. Though the graphics might make their heads look a little on the strange side, it isn't game crushing.

The other weapons available to Kirk and Spock all have their own flavour of primary and secondary fire and add up to the gameplay tactically.

The ever-present companion through the missions is the Tricorder. It acts the same as augmented-vision or "detective mode" (from the Batman games) allowing Kirk or Spock to notice hidden circuitry, detect life-signs beyond solid walls, interact with mechanisms at a distance and even distract or sabotage the enemy or head and powerup each other.

The main borrowed mechanic from Gears of War is the "downed" state when either Kirk or Spock get knocked out to an inch of their life. The other can quickly come to the rescue by tapping a button in a timed sequence to just heal them up or even supercharge them whilst healing them up.

The other GoW mechanic is the ubiquitous "cover" mechanic, whereby you can take cover behind ye olde Chest-High Cover(tm) allowing you to blind fire or take quick aimed shots whilst temporarily stepping out of cover and then back.

The similarity with the Deus Ex games comes from the stealth elements whereby you can take several approaches to completing objectives, including alternate paths and the ability to chose whether to take a forced aggressive approach or stay entirely stealthy. There will be crawling through "jeffries tubes" and vents. The stealthy approach is expressedly rewarded in most of the missions.

The reward for completing objectives, and in a lot of cases completing them stealthely (you get a Commendation) is experience that can be spent upgrading/modifying your Tricorder and Kirk's or Spock's primary weapon. Although you can upgrade the other character's equipment whilst playing solo, it won't be used by the A.I. (the upgrade) despite being able to buy it and "install" it.

About the AI...This is a movie game, with a focus on two player Co-Op. This means that its NOT the best game due to the usual rush to get the product out the door in time for the movie, etc. There are glitches, they are minor and haven't really stopped me from finish the game in a day of non-stop play. Your AI controlled character will come to your aid and will follow you, teleporting to you if they get stuck (which they do sometimes) however in Boss fights (and there are a few) they might end up getting downed due to standing still where they ought to have dodged. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND not trying to resurrect/heal them if you can or focus on keeping the Boss's attention on you by constantly firing and running.

This is a minor grievance and I honestly expected FAR worse from a movie game. They are historically known to be horrible messes. This one is actually quite good.

Lastly, the involvment between the characters is a bit cliche, but don't let that distract you from the real stars of the story - the enemy you are facing.

Co-Op has potential. Classic movie tie in issues. Glitchy, story is meh, and there is no real passion to be found here. If you're a Star Trek fanboy maybe you'll enjoy it but otherwise stay away. It's just not worth even a sale price.
