Star Trek is a product clearly rushed, full of bugs, and plagued by serious shortcomings in terms of gameplay, level design and ideas. A tie-in film school "throws out that much selling the same", in short, covered only partially by the presence of the original voices of the film and a certain basic respect in dealing with themes and characters in the saga. A wasted opportunity, which we expected much more sincerely.

PRO

- Voices of the original film
- Some spectacular cutscene
- See Kirk or Spock run into walls is pretty funny

Against

- poor shooting mechanics
- I.A. indecent
- Chock full of obvious bugs
- Level design low

If you like the Star Trek movies, buy this for less than $10, play it with a friend, and don't take it too seriously.

The friendly AI is terrible and the game is full of minor bugs and glitches. Playing with a friend completely remedies the former and can make the latter often more humorous than annoying.

The game is surprisingly varied for what it is, the shooting is satisfying enough, the movie's voice cast turns in (mostly) decent performances, and it has enough "Star Trek-ness" to it to satisfy fans.

No on will ever accuse it of being a particularly good game, but find a friend, turn off your brain, treat it like a dumb summer movie and you'll get your money's worth.

While I have not quite finished it yet, I would be shocked if any major revelations come along in the next couple hours of gameplay to change anything in this review.

Pretty much all the reviews are right. This game is awesome and awful at the same time. If you don't have someone to play it co-op, stop reading now and just don't buy it. With co-op, it's a JJ-Star-Trek-Themed Gears of War clone that does manage to entertain the same way that MST3K does, really.

As of this writing, the game is certainly playable and we've encountered only one major bug that required restarting a checkpoint. The most shocking thing when we started playing is the voice actors being the cast of the Abrams' movies, was not expecting that.

The gameplay is Gears of War light, for sure. You have your phaser and one other weapon. You can unlock upgrades and equip one from each of various skills, but most are pointless and after a couple levels the XP is equally meaningless. You get XP by Tricordering various flora, fauna, weapons, and, for some reason, stalagmites (because we certainly don't have THOSE on Earth). So if you are a lore junky you'll have boundless XP to use at least.

Primarily, you just cover and shoot your way through everything. The game is never anywhere near as hard as anything in GoW, aside from a couple boss segments that maybe aren't so much hard as questionably designed. When knocked into recovery mode, you seem to just get up on your own after a while most of the time if your partner is too busy being mauled to scan you back to your feet (as one does).

There are "stealth" sections which basically amount to 1: don't shoot anyone from the front and 2: use the crawlspaces. They are almost all, fortunately, completely optional and it is usually way easier and way more fun to just be a jerk and gun down everything. Again, the bonus xp you would earn from these stealth segments is largely pointless so that isn't really a factor.

The various hacking minigames are almost interesting and fairly harmless, but the flying / dodging minigames are largely annoying and needless.

To sum up: It's definitely worth the $3 I paid for it for the co-op experience with my brother. If you have someone to play it with like that, and you like GoW covered in Abrams Lens Flare Paint, then go ahead and grab it on sale. Otherwise, skip it.

1.5 years/3-year mission

P.S. The Gorns are jerks, seriously. Knock it off you guys.

First I played the game when it was brand new and yes, there has been lots of bugs in a single player mode, but nothing major. Just the kind you can easily solve by reloading from last checkpoint... and there are checkpoints every two steps in this game anyway. In Co-op play the bugs were a lot less frequent and it was more fun, since no AI can really substitute for a real player-partner. You can't coordinate your approach with AI, but it was still enjoyable enough in single player though. However, I strogly recommend to find a good co-op partner, because that will guarantee a far more interesting gaming experience. Today I installed the game for a second time, played the most of it and no bugs in the single player to be found. So it seems the developers patched all they could. So far I can't complain about a single thing. Maybe I was just lucky today :)

Right, I'm a trekkie, so I'm biased in this area, but the feeling of really being there, in that universe, was priceless. And there were many little details only fans or very attentive players will notice. Call them easter eggs, if you like. The story was a bit (but just that one bit) over-the-top, but that's part of the fun. Besides that, there is plenty of humor in those well done videos forming the story. I have read that the developers were trying to make it seem and feel more like a movie and that's exactly the feeling that I had. The designs are beautiful and that's what makes it so filmic. All those strange environments and sci-fi elements. Who liked J.J. Abrams's films will like this "movie" as well.

Despite the major bugs and glitches you may have seen from those who played it on Youtube, I can safely tell you that I saw very few myself. However, I was playing multiplayer with my boyfriend 99% of time, from start to finish. So the bugs are much fewer and far between in that mode. I'm unsure about single player, so don't take my word for that. But anyways, I enjoyed the story and voice acting the most overall. The gameplay was a bit stiff at times, but was still enjoyable. Being a fan of FPS games myself, I found that portion of the gameplay to be solid. So if you're a fan of the franchise and have a buddy to play with, please do! 10/10 would jump off a bridge before it was extended again.

I know this has had some bad reviews, probably when it was newer and more buggy but I enjoyed it, even more so if you're a fan of the new Star Trek reboot. The voices are all from the actors used in the films. I thought the music score was well done, elevating the tense moments.
The hacking of switches gets a bit boring but the action keeps you on your toes most of the time. There's a story in there and if you don't take it all too seriously you'll find it entertaining enough. Grab it at a a bargain price and kick some alien butt.

Fun game for most Star Trek fans. Was disappointed, however, when I had left the game and wanted to resume later on, it only let me start over, the chapter progress was gone for some reason. Not fun enough to replay the some 10 chapters I had already completed...

By the way, I would love to have an interactive game like this based on the original Wrath of Khan movie. Now that would be fun for a lot of people I would think. But ah, probably will never happen :-)

Acclaimed developer Digital Extremes and co-publishers Bandai Namco and CBS Studios come together to create an unforgettable chapter of this sci-fi behemoth's hit franchise. From the moment you launch Star Trek, you're faced with the iconic crew of the USS Enterprise standing by to seek out strange new worlds and to boldy go where no man has gone before. Lifelike renderings of James T. Kirk and Spock allow players to fill the captain's shoes in an exciting third-person action-adventure game. Star Trek takes the best bits of Uncharted, Metroid, Mass Effect and Dead Space to deliver a unique rollercoaster ride visiting the struggle of the few surviving Vulcans and their encounter with the Gorn. Visceral gunplay and stealth sections combined with the familiar element of the cover system brings enjoyment that is hard to find elsewhere. The large, open maps and complex puzzles leave a number of alternate routes available for the player to advance in this compelling story. The sound design left me feeling like I was actually on board the Enterprise and the graphics are remarkably detailed. Another project lead by J.J. Abrams that is hard to pass up.

This game had a lot of potential, and I was pretty excited for a Star Trek game. Unfortunately, I found it to be quite lacking in many areas, and the most disappointing thing was this game could have, and perhaps, should have, been so much better. While the in-game characters do have a good resemblance of who they are supposed to be, and the voice acting and soundtrack is pretty decent, these factors may just about be the only good part of the game, and sadly, that's not enough to warrant a positive review from me. In relation to the graphics in this game - while graphics do not make or break a game - this game does not look like a 2013 release. The animations don't look good at all, especially the movement and when you need to do something with your partner like "pry open doors". Additionally, graphical elements such as flames also look terrible.

The gameplay is mediocre at best. Terrible game mechanics and clunky and unresponsive controls contribute to a pretty poor gaming experience. The "stealth" and shooting is nothing special for a third-person shooter, just different in the form of Star Trek weapons - I guess the alternate fire is somewhat interesting... but not enough to make me go "wow". The cover system is pretty abysmal as well, there are so many better cover systems out there. The minigames including hacking and bypassing are stale and boring - interesting the first time or two, but quickly becoming repetitive, boring and a chore. The linear level design also makes the game a chore to play through. Figuring out what needed to be done was more frustrating than fun, and after succeeding, I only felt like "phew, now I can move on" as opposed to a sense of accomplishment. Except that half the time, I couldn't! This is because of game breaking bugs, especially in single player where your partner gets stuck or can't move, or the objective itself is bugged, forcing your to restart the checkpoint if you're lucky, or the entire chapter if you're not. Apparently these bugs have been patched, and some people have never encountered bugs, but I've personally encountered many. The jumping mechanics and the collision detection are also pretty poor and quite frustrating.

The plot was nothing special, and I found myself playing through it for the sake of completion rather than a desire to know what happens next or out of enjoyment, as good games will do to me. The campaign is probably too short for my liking as well, considering the price of the game, even accounting for Australian prices. The game is slow, long, and tedious... not fun and enjoyable. Co-op would improve this game, I suppose, if you can get it to work (which I couldn't), due to the pretty poor AI - not just your partner, but also the enemy. The inability to follow instructions can be crippling, forcing you to fail stealth if you're lucky, or to load the past checkpoint or even the chapter if you're not.

Sadly, I uninstalled as soon as I finished enough of the achievements that I could be bothered getting. Sadly, despite loving Star Trek; as a gamer, this is a game I cannot, and will not recommend.

It's been a while since this game came out and I can say that I haven't had a problem with it! There was an animation glitch, once, I think. I have gone through the game several times, using different strategies and weapons. The side objectives as well as the acheivements curate to true star trek fans, and the overall gameplay can be entertaining to anyone. The puzzle solving is neat, helps break up the action (or stealth, depending on how you are playing). The multiplayer didn't work for the first week after the game was released, and that is where most (not all) of the negative comments came from, but my wife and I patiently waited, and played through it after that ordeal was worked out with Steam. It envokes the spirit of the new movies, looks fantastic, and gives you some familiar TOS throwbacks as well, like name-drops (Decker?!) and location-hints that Trekkies should listen for. A lot of time and effort was obviously put into this game. Now that it's dropped in price, more people who were iffy about getting it because of the initial negative reviews and outrage over multiplayer, should get this game and see for themselves that: it's actually pretty great.

So I just finished Star Trek! Overall? Mostly positive but I can see why people have critism.

This game takes place between the first and the second movie, bridging the vents between the two. I loved that this game payed homage and nods towards TOS by updating the Gorn and giving them a modern spin. The game plays in a similair fashion to Gears of War (pseudo shoulder shooter) and I thought the Tricorder mechanic was one of the most inspired parts of the game. The voice acting is PHENOMINAL (having the actors themselves lend their voices) and the sound track (again from the movies) swelling in the background was a beautiful touch that didn't go unoticed. The story was great and the shooting was good!

I can absolutely see why this game recieved the critism and negativity that it did. It just seems to fall apart every now again. It goes from having these beautiful graphics with impressive shaders to looking like a dogs breakfast. There were also frequent graphical glitches, sometimes clunky mechanics (including some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ platforming) and the most awful lip syncing I have ever seen. Again this seems to come and go so it may just be that the game breaks occassionally. It sort of strikes me as a title that ran out of budget at the last alpha build...patched together. Look at the stealth mechanics and you will see what I mean. I can see where they were going with it...they just never finished it.

Overall this isn't a bad game and has a decent story attached to it. I eeked out 13 hours which is typical of this kind of game and your replay value is based on collection of achievements. Overall not great. But certainly not bad! With some more money and time, this game could have been something spectacular!

An absolutely terrible game. I'm not sure what's worse, the torrent of glitches that await the players or the goddawful game mechanics themselves. Everything about this game is awkward and clunky not to mention being poorly optomized for PC in both controls and graphical effects. Bloom lighting that makes Spock's eyes glow red, reproducable glitches that allow you to walk through walls, the ability to intentionally or accidentally trap your partner in a turbolift requiring a restart, the ability to appear to be spinning around while walking, inconsistent jump mechanics, poor collision detection, inconsistent gameplay mechanics (sometimes you can pass through each other, sometimes you are solid), resolution settings that are forgotten between sessions, weapon loadout being reset between maps/sessions, broken cutscenes that you can die in, certain controls cannot be rebound even though others can (I'm looking at you, crouch) and a whole host of other issues. Want to see how bad this game is? Watch our co-op playthrough.
Just don't buy it.
