I enjoyed the original Alan Wake immensely: for me it is still one of the prime examples of how an action-adventure 3rd person game can be made into an exciting and scary experience. So I started playing Alan Wake's American Nightmare with high expectancies, but quickly the game let me rather down own this. American Nightmare is not really a sequel nor a prequel to the original, it's more like a standalone game on the same "universe", but on a much smaller scale, so in the end it felt like some sort of expansion pack to me, using the same protagonist, game mechanics and of course game engine.

This engine still stands firm and delivers more than decent graphics: it's great in creating an atmosphere thanks to superb lighting, something which the original game used to immensely scaring effect. Although graphics are fine in this new installment, the actual gameplay is not. It felt almost painful to see the original game's tension and feeling of being utterly desperate while fighting off the forces of darkness turned into some Rambo-like experience. In the original game, guns, ammo and the ever-important batteries for the flashlight (sometimes it was the ONLY weapon to fight of enemies) were so scarce at moments that it almost drove me crazy, but the feeling of relief and accomplishment after finally getting further in the story, was all the more satisfying for it. American Nightmare uses the same game mechanics, but provides such an arsenal of over-powerful weapons, an almost endless supply of ammo and a flashlight that recharges in a matter of seconds. As a result of these changes, the entire gaming experience changed from an exciting horror adventure to a lacklustre shooter where I just blasted my way past hordes of enemies. Were it not for the obvious comparison to the original game, I'd probably have enjoyed American Nightmare a bit more, especially since after finishing the story there are a number of arcade-levels where the goal is just to get as many kills and as high a score as possible. These are played on fairly large and well-developed maps, and felt like playing more natural than the story.

The story, perhaps the main protagonist in the original Alan Wake, is perhaps the weakest point in this newer installment. It's made coplex in an unnatural feeling way and lacks focus. But most problematic of all, it forces the player to play through the three locations (only three!!) three times, each time "altering history" a little bit, but in the end this feels more like a gimmick and the net result is simply too repetitve a game.

I'd loved to give this game a heartily recommendation as a worthy addition to the brilliant original one, but it really fails to do so. As it stands, it's not a bad game, but it did not live up to my expectancies at all.

Gameplay: 15/30
Graphics: 14/20
Sound: 8/10
Technical: 6/10 (it felt like being slower and less well optimized)
Replayability: 6/10 (SP only, but the arcade levels add some extra challenges with leaderbords)
Steam integration: 5/10 (no cards, a small bunch of achievements, while the original game really shined here)
Personal appreciation: 4/10

Overall score: 58/100

With independent additions happens that they are often quite different than what after the contact with the basic version players expect. Wake's journey gets less creepy and more shooty in the fun but still somehow manages to be entertaining.

As a huge fan of Alan Wake, I have to say I found Alan Wake's American Nightmare rather disappointing. What this game does well is the atmosphere, the gameplay, the voice acting, and other minor technical details. What is doesn't do well is the story.

The game gives you 9 missions, but it's more like 3; you essentially play 3 missions 3 times each. I won't go into detail, but each time you repeat one of the missions there is different dialogue and slightly modified objectives. You'll see what I mean after you finish the game. I think if the story hadn't been set up do this, it would have been a much better game. The game is actually labeled as a spinoff from the original set in the same universe, and man, ain't that the truth. If you were hoping to get any significant continuation of story from the original out of this game, I'm sorry to tell you, but you won't find it here. I would have been truly upset if this was the sequel.

Nevertheless, I still found the game enjoyable for everything it did right. If you are a die-hard Alan Wake fan, I recommend this to you. If you have not played Alan Wake before, I strongly urge you to play the original before playing this. If you played original Alan Wake and it wasn't necessarily your favorite game/you thought it was just alright, you might be better off waiting for the true sequel. Otherwise, this is a great game to pick up on a sale.

Alan Wake game was good, the gameplay is not without issues namely the framerates slows down even on low settings. American Nightmare was a bit of of an improvement although the narrator was different and the UI is not similar as well. The story is not satisfactory, it is like a B-movie follow up of the original Alan Wake game. Then the 2nd part of the game gets the ultimate stick-up-your-♥♥♥ surprise, you will repeat the whole game again with slightly harder opponents. Although I appreciate the evolved opponents the idea of repeating the game is annoying WTF moment. I like the first Alan Wake so I continue playing then bam! You will repeat the first chapter thrice! 3 ♥♥♥♥ing times! I gave up and decided to write this review to give the American Nightmare it deserve, A ♥♥♥♥ing NIGHTMARE!! playing MMO with repetitive quests is already annoying but an action-adventure game to have this kind of story is just ♥♥♥♥ed up!! So I cannot recommend this American Nightmare. Play Alan Wake original and just watch a video of the gameplay of AW:AM on youtube, for it will destroy what you love about Alan Wake.

While Alan Wake's strongpoint was it's narrative and storytelling, American Nightmare seemed to think it was the gameplay. Because of that, Alan Wake's American Nightmare is a definite step back from the original, and unless you really liked the combat of Alan Wake, to the extent you'd play a mediocre game just to have a more refined version of said combat, then don't bother with Alan Wake's American Nightmare.

The game take place at an indeterminate time after Alan's been stuck in Cauldron Lake, he escapes by rewriting reality, and he ends up in Night Springs. It turns out Alan is some "Champion of Light", trying to defeat the "Herald of Darkness"... who the hell wrote this ♥♥♥♥? This isn't Alan Wake, it's some weird pseudo-fantasy cliched bullcrap. Anyway, he's looking for his doppleganger, Mr Scratch, who is the Herald of Darkness, and seeks to destroy him. Along they way he meets secondary characters who seems to completely oblivious to everything that's happening, and just sorta wait for ♥♥♥♥ to go wrong.

Eventually they do, and Alan goes to a new version of reality where he didn't ♥♥♥♥ up. Rinse and repeat a few times until Fin. The story is uninteresting and unnessarily padded, with the same sequence of events happening 3 times over. The villain is just a ♥♥♥♥ version of Alan Wake. He's not even like some evil destroyer of worlds, or some Orange/Blue Morality Nethergod or something; he's just slightly more dickish Alan Wake.

Aside from the ♥♥♥♥ty plot, combat in the game has been changed a bit. It features more weapons and noticebly faster than in the original game. While the combat is more enjoyable, it still doesn't make up for the bad narrative.

If you liked Alan Wake (at least for the reasons I did), then skip this one, it's not worth your time or your money.

Definitely, absolutely, positively not recommended...This is not a game but just a minimap played four times over from the beginning. It was obvious from the install that something was wrong because the whole game was just about two gigs...Takes an hour or little more to finish.Steer right away.

Alan Wake's American Nightmare Review.

There's not a lot I can say about the story without giving it away, but it wasn't as gripping as the first one. I was definitely less impressed with the overall game. It seemed cobbled together, with a lot less exploration and character development. It does smoothly resume the story however, it's just not as good. Alan is stuck in a time loop that repeats itself 3 times throughout the game. There's only 3 maps in the game. The motel, the observatory, and the drive in cinema. I was disappointed by this, as I was hoping for the continuous exploration like the first game. There were no driveable vehicles, and a lot less running through the woods to get to the next area. It's all narrated and way less decision making.

There's still the "Night Springs" TV show, but there's also Alan's... doppelganger that makes dramatic appearances on the TV. There's also still the same Pat Maine slowly revealing the story through the radio. There's a lot less dialogue and interactions Alan has with other characters.

The game has a few combat tweaks, like the default unboosted flashlight doesn't harm the Taken. I had to boost it constantly but it recharges almost instantly making it almost more effective. I think I used 1 battery the whole game. There's a few more weapons but I still kept the pistol until I could get the double barrel sawed-off, which mows down almost any Taken in 1 shot. There's a few more types of Taken as well, and they switch up all the time. I think my favorite was the crow guys, if you hit them with the light they jump into the air and turn into a murder of crows until they coalesce back into the human form. Then I just blew them away with the sawed-off. The combat is far less challenging because every time a Taken spawns the camera pans to it, where as before Taken would spawn silently and just throw a hammer outta nowhere, or come running outta the woods with no warning.

The ending was so lame. I was pretty disappointed since I saw it coming from the first time loop. It was nice to finish the game and know that the Alan Wake series closes here.

"Just go get that battery."

I wasn't impressed by Alan Wake and decided to give this one a chance. But AW: American Nightmare doesn't deserve a chance. It's utterly unscary just like it's predecessor. Story is not engaging, chars aren't interesting, goals are boring... You just restart another generator and than another enemy wave comes at your a.s.s. The only good thing about this game is gunplay - flashlight+weapons technique works nicely. But it's not enough to make it a worthwhile experience. Leave it be - the game is a nightmare.

Uhh, this has no place in the Alan Wake Storyline. There's no place to put this. Plus, Alan is way too calm about this "darkness monsters are trying to bash in my face" thing. What's with the darkness monsters, anyway? Didn't we do away with them when we crippled the Dark Presence?

- An Alan Wake Shoot em' up. No.
- Alan is really strong, and the weapons are ridiculously overpowered.
- Story is two seconds long.
- Story literally loops back onto itself three times.
- Ooh, I'm your evil darkness doppelganger!
- Enemies are cartoonish, not remotely scary.
- Wait, this is "Return"? Oh, lawd, please no.

+ Story doesn't feel too much like it's repeating itself.
+ Thank Jeebus there's a minimap on this one.
+ Fewer collectible item sets.

Disappointing! I bought this after i finished Alan Wake, and confused with the ending, i was hoping this game would shed some light. I was sad to see it did not. The plot for this one is confusing, and you basically just run around trying to defeat Mr.Scratch. >.< 1/10.

Where can I begin? I love this game. It's significantly more combat-oriented than it's predecessor which, in some ways, is nice although it shifts the genre of the game from horror to survival. However, the game remains charming in itself and tells a new story in it's new theme. Scratch is possibly one of the best and most likeable villains I have come across and I sorely want to see more of him and his manic, devil-may-care attitude about murder and ruining lives. The environments are fun and the upgrades well-placed; I never found the game particularly hard or particularly easy, but just comfortable enough to enjoy the short little novela of the story. It's a satisfying taste of our beloved story and hugely out of shape, byronic hero until Alan Wake 2 is made.

The game looks awesome. Now it has more "action" than it was in the first part. Probably, it is because of new guns and adding music to the fights. I'm not sure about the plot yet. I guess in the first part it was much better.

Quick review:
Should you play this game? - Yes.
Will you enjoy it as much as the original Alan Wake? - Probably not, but you'll still have fun.

-------------------------
What I enjoyed:
* Additional, powerful weapons made me feel like a one-man army.
* Excellent visual quality.
* Interesting storyline that ties into the original.
* Well-executed live-action components sequences.
* Mr. Scratch (!!!)

My critique:

I purchased both Alan Wake and the American Nightmare sequel in a bundle, so I was able to play the sequel soon after completing the original game. Perhaps I should have given some time between the two games, because the transition between the two games was a bit jarring. American Nightmare, despite the name, lacked much of the horror atmosphere that kept me addicted to the previous game. It was the little things; like Alan making self-referential wise cracks about his supposedly very serious mission, the much easier enemies, and the dead-panned voice acting of the NPCs. I did not get the impression that Alan was fighting for his life and that of his wife against an unrelenting horrific force of darkness, but rather this was just something he did that was mildly irritating. As in: "Eh, it's a job... BLAM! BLAM! BLAM!!!"

As for the enemies being weaker, I mean that their darkness was broken much quicker, allowing them to be killed sooner. A large part of what made Alan Wake challenging was the time needed to weaken enemies before they could be killed. That gamepley mechanic created many tense situations where I had to dodge an onslaught of enemies while struggling to consistently shine a light on each one, before I could even start to kill them. This was especially tricky if I ran out of batteries in the middle of the fight, which made the eventual victory all the more rewarding. In American Nightmare, this feature is weakened, in that I was able to break almost every enemy's darkness before they came within swinging distance of me.

Regretably, this game was also much shorter than the previous one, and I was a bit surprised when I beat it so quickly. I literally played through the entire campaign in 5 hours. Now, I did enjoy most of that time, but I was surprised when it ended so soon. I am not even sure if the campaign is worth playing a second time, because I saw just about every detail available in the 3 main levels the storyline loops you through.

And regarding the games looping storyline, I did enjoy the idea of Alan continually improving his strategy on each attempt and how the NPCs started to realize something was up on the second iteration. I was fondly reminded of the movie "Groundhog Day". However, the third iteration did not add much more to the story, as both Alan and myself were thinking, "Uh, I have to repeat this all over again..." Right up until the game ended (too soon), I was hoping there would be more levels and another twist to the story. Then at the ending scene, I realized that the game's developers had cleverly found a way to make a very short game three times as long... by making you play it three times over.

Despite all of this, I DO recommend this game to anyone who has played the original Alan Wake or is just looking for a fun action game with some light horror undertones. I had fun playing it, which is ultimately what I am looking for in any game.
