A dramatic shift from the first game, "American Nightmare" pushes the franchise more towards the action/shooter genre than the survival/horror of its first iteration. with plentiful reloads and ammo pick-ups, resource management is never a concern, which is fortunate as enemies are never in short supply either. The game still boasts impressive graphics, although the entire adventure is spread across only three maps, which you will frequently revisit. However, rather than feeling repetitive, each time you return to a map there are new challenges and I quickly came to appreciate the lessons I had learned from my last visit. The story is more fantastic and, at least in my opinion, slightly creepier thanks to the addition of new character (and Alan Wake's evil doppleganger) Mr. Scratch. The first game lacked an identifiable personification of evil with whom the player could relate (and hate); Mr Scratch fulfills that need very well. The adventure is fairly short but enjoyable throughout.

If you played Alan Wake, then this one is a must.
It helps understanding what happened after the ending and sets a scenario for a third game.
Alan, after saving Alice, finds himself trapped in the Dark Place and attempts to escape a time loop set by Mr. Scratch, his doppelganger.
There are tons of references to the first game and to events that took place before it, as well as a lot of new information on character's background story.

Alan Wake’s American Nightmare is based on a script written by Alan Wake for the TV series Night Springs, the TV show mentioned in the first game. Alan finds himself in Night Springs, a town in Arizona.
Here Alan meets people who claim to have already met him, yet these same people admit that he is not the man they previously met. It seems Alan has a doppelganger, his dark half, a man who represents all his bad sides and is referred to as Mr Scratch. Mr Scratch is not a friendly guy, he is a murder and he wants to take over Alan’s life. So you must stop him. That is basically the whole story. The story is also really short, it will only take around 5 hours to finish the game.
The game itself is much more action orientated than the original, yet there seems to be fewer enemies encounters than that game had.
Overall the sound design is good and if you enjoyed it in the first game you will enjoy it here.
The game’s cut scenes are interesting, because a real actor portray both, Alan himself and Mr Scratch.
The graphics are not bad, there has been a definite improvement to the engine since the original Alan Wake.
Besides of the Story mode there is also the Arcade Mode. It is a survival mode where wave after wave of enemies are sent for you until the timer runs out and the sun rises. There are 5 different maps, each repeated with a nightmare mode version and are all unlocked by gaining stars for the previous levels completed.
All in all, Alan Wake’s American Nightmare is a not a bad game. Overall it is an enjoyable game but disappointing compared to the orginal Alan Wake.

Alan Wake's American Nightmare is an adventure third-person shooter game and a sequel to Alan Wake. The gameplay is pretty much the same, you have to fight a ghost like enemy that protected with darkness aura. You neutralize the aura first with your handheld flashlight before you can completely kill the enemy. There are many new weapons in this game like semi-automatic rifle, SMG and assault rifle. Also there is a new arcade game mode where you have to survive until dawn and kill as many enemy as you can to get higher score. The storyline is not as much as Alan Wake but still enjoyable and good. If you have finished Alan Wake, in the end level you meet Mr. Scratch. He is the new enemy in this game. I recommend this game but I suggest to buy it when it goes on sale as the price is a bit higher for a game that doesn't have too much.

The combat has been vastly improved over vanilla Alan Wake and now is genuinely fun. It's just a shame that the game is so short and the plot not very indepth because the combat is good now. Despite the lack of indepth plot, It still has solid atmopshere and writing like its predecessor. Definitely pick this up along with the original.
